Why is there no mention of Balder in the Thor movie? Is he Odin"s son or not?

Well there really hasn't been no reason given WHY Balder wasn't in the movie.
YES according to volume 3 of the comics Balder IS Thor's brother.
There might be a hint in the recent Ultimate Thor mini series. In that mini, all the Asgardians are are Earth bound and powerless. They had Thor in an institution and Dr Blake was his Doctor, AND Blake was BALDER.
Now if that's what is going on in the movie, Blake and Jane are broken up.....kind of a messy situation, two brothers in love with one lady. :D

That was my thought when I saw it the other week.

I'm not the most knowledgable on Thor and the Asgardians but I thought Baldur was a pretty notable omission.

I can see why he wasn't in the film though... his presence wouldn't have served the story (in any way that I can see)... Kinda how Frigga had next to no screen time. Maybe in Thor 2 we'll see him. :cwink:

He could've been another warrior/friend of Thor, at least. Would it really have made a difference if there were 5 warriors fighting for Thor's return instead of 4?

But hopefully we'll get a sequel and he'll be in that. Gotta get Balder in there sometime, though. He's been too big a character in the Thor universe to leave him absent from the movies forever, if they keep making them.

I think that scenario would literally make me vomit. Blake is Balder? What? God, the Ultimate comics are terrible.

No, they're just different and as a fan I get that it doesn't jive with you.

For me however, I've loved the ultimates so far and I look forward to reading that.

I don't mind not having him in the movie. Gives us something to discuss when the sequel comes around.

To add to the Blake/Balder idea in the movie, did not Foster say the only clothes she had big enough for Thor were left by her ex, Dr Donald Blake? I know when Thor was Blake, he was much smaller, so it seemed odd to me that the clothes would fit Thor.

Well what I'm thinking in the movieverse, is Odin Knows Balder's death would cause a Ragnarok right? What better place to hide Balder than out in the open?
I mean the movie doesn't have to follow the Ulty thor story but the idea is there. I mean in a way it's curious that both Blake and Blader aren't in the film yet Blake is mentioned.
There have been a couple times both Feige and Kenneth side step the Balder question.

Thor's muscley but not exactly a giant. I'm sure if Blake were an average-sized dude around Thor's height, he'd be wearing large or extra-large shirts, which could fit virtually anyone who's not really fat or really tiny.

Who says we have to wait for the Sequel? Avengers IS coming up, :D, you never know Blake may pop up in Avengers if it's based in NYC.

I assumed Balder was off in Nornheim knocking Norn Stones with Karnilla. :yellow:

Of course!

I was happy enough with the treatment The Warriors Three received even though their screen time was limited. There was simply too much universe to introduce. I'm glad they didn't jam Balder in to this film. I love Balder from the Walt Simonson days and he needs a nice meaty part in the sequel. I wonder who they should cast?

Yeah, as much as I would've liked to see Balder, with the Warriors 3, Sif, Heimdall, & Loki, there would've just been too many characters although it would've been nice to see him in the dinner banquet somewhere in the end. Balder and Sif/Heimdall not being siblings where the only things I questioned about in this movie, but they're nothing major.

Well, if it's any consolation, I was told that Balder was the guy who took the Casket off of its holder thing after the battle with the Frost Giants at the beginning of the movie.

That's what's in my personal MCU-canon now. Balder was Karnilla's consort as part of a truce between Asgard and Nornheim and taking part in a broad-strokes series of events of his Simonson series.

They left Balder for Thor 2. They (Marvel Studios crew) even made some concept art (in black & white colors) with him for the first movie, but, as we all know, there wasn't any mention of him.

Maybe they could kill Odin off in Thor 2, have Thor go through a character arc where he's torn between love of Earth and duty to Asgard, and then introduce Balder as another heir to resolve everything.

That could be why Kenneth kept side stepping Balder questions.

I thought that was just some random guard. He was dressed like a random guard.

We don't know for sure lol we never had any kind of definite answer on Balder. Look at all the Asgardian Guard's helmets, They ALL look like Balder's Helmet.
There's not ONE word in the script on Balder either.

That means Balder's not in the movie to me. I wouldn't want him to be in the movie by way of someone involved in the production commenting, "Oh yeah, that guy who looks like every other guard in the movie? That guy was Balder." Balder deserves better than that.

Well the entire scene with Odin and the Asgardians taking the Casket wasn't in the Script I have. THAT was added later. It was part of that first set of reshoots. Not to mention the post credits scene.

Well if this Balder is Thor's brother, they already have the perfect person to cast, wasnt Hemsworth's brother very close to landing the role of Thor?
