Iron Man Where will Iron man fall?

Its close but I give the edge to GR. When I walked out I wasnt nearly as pissed then when I saw the BS that was X3.

Don't you think that might have a lot to do with the quality of X3 in relation to the first two movies, instead of just the movie on it's own?

That's a mistake I think a lot of people make, basing their opinion of a sequel more off of the previous movies than off of itself. Mark my words no matter how good Spider-Man 3 is, if it isn't AS good as the first two people will turn on it and whine about how it's the worst piece of crap movie to ever come out, all the while giving praise to a mediocre movie that turned out better than they had initially expected.

Hard to say. This is shaping out to be one of the more thoughtful Marvel movies. If they pull it off, I think it could easily match X2 and the Spider-Man movies in terms of quality.

What excites me is the prospect of what'll come after. They've front-loaded this thing so heavily with amazing talent; actors, Jon, Adi, Stan Winston, ILM, etc, etc, that it should be more difficult to short-change future movie efforts.

Example: Think forward to the Avengers movie - how likely is it we'll see RDJr sharing the screen with John Cena's Captain America? Not bloody likely. They're setting the bar pretty high. :woot:

wait what???? John Cena is playing captain america?

LOL, no, I just used him as an example. I understand he's a popular choice in some circles. Certainly not my choice.

It occurs to me I might not have been too clear, my apologies. Given the amazing cast in IM, I'd think they would cast comparably in the associated movies. At least the ones where these characters interact, i.e. the Avengers flicks. Gods willing, we'll get the comic-book-flick equivalent of the Heat cast in the Avengers.

This is my ratings for Marvel`s recent movies.

Worst~Elektra----Daredevil/Hulk---Fantastic Four/Ghost Rider---X-Men---Spider-Man~Best

Iron Man will fall between Daredevil/Hulk and Fantastic Four/Ghost Rider.

I agree with everything you said except Fantastic four being better than Daredevil.

Sounds like you don't have high hopes for Iron Man.

In case anyone's interested, I'm fascinated with how movies are perceived and follow imdb rating religiously. So averaging the ratings of Favreau's 3 previous movies. I've placed that in a list of all comics book superhero (as in no Sin city, or anything like that) movies made by DC and Marvel since Blade:

*based on ratings of previous Favreau movies.

Batman Begins - 8.3
X2 - 7.9
Spider-Man 2 - 7.8
Spider-Man - 7.3
X-men - 7.3
X-men: The Last Stand - 7.1
Superman Returns - 6.9
Blade - 6.8
Iron Man - 6.5*
Blade II - 6.5
Punisher - 6.2
Hulk - 5.9
Fantastic Four - 5.9
Blade: Trinity - 5.7
Daredevil - 5.6
Ghost Rider - 5.5
Elektra - 5.0
Catwoman - 3.2

What I usually do when two movies have the same rating is, I go on the Rotten Tomato percentage, So I did that to find out what to rate higher: Iron Man, or Blade II, so again I averaged the RT ratings for Favreau's previous movies, and while Blade II only had 55%... Favreau's average is 76%! with one movie being as high as 85% So it's very possible Iron Man could turn out being one of those movies that critics love more than the general public (sort of like Superman Returns, which I loved.)

I place X2 & Spider-Man 2 at the top of Marvel's crop of films. The bottom two films in the modern era are Elektra & Ghost Rider. All others fall somewhere between.

The exciting thing is that I firmly believe that Marvel's top three films will air between now and next May. I expect Spider-Man 3 is be the king very soon. I also expect FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Iron Man to surpass expectations and surpass X2's remarkable quality.

THE list in May 2008:
1) Spider-Man 3
2) Iron Man
3) FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer
4) Spider-Man 2
5) X2: X-Men United

IF
IF Favreau's IRON MAN movie fails
it'll probably be due to blandness...
that is one thing I saw which is the flaw of Favreau's other movie ZATHURA
ZATHURA could have been as imaginative as JUMANJI... it could have had more "spice" to it. But it was pretty bland and forgettable.

I am not against Favreau as a director. I have confidence in him. But in case Favreau does fail (and God forbid that to happen), it'll probably because of that.

It will be considered one of Marvel's top 5 comic book movies.

That is until Iron Man 2 takes it's spot.

I'm sorry, color me a skeptic after the latest crop of comicbook movie attempts. So far I haven't heard anything about this film that is getting me excited. In fact, I heard a number of things that have me believing we are going to get another 'reality' based comicbook movie. Another film where they try to make more out of the comicbook and it's characters than is necessary. Iron Man is about scifi-ish adventure--or at least the IM I remember was. I don't want to see another evil corporation, evil tycoon movie; just do the damn comicbook.

I fear another chance to do an incredible and visually stunning comicbook movie is slowly going up in flames again.

It's fricken amazing that after all these years and various attempts at comicbook movies, only six have actually succeeded in being great comicbook movies in feel and visuals. (Donner's Supes, Raimi's films and the two Frank Miller translations)

It will fall somewhere between Hulk and FF. The cast will try to save it, but as always the script. story and execution will bring the film down. The Spider-man films will continue their reign as the best comicbook movies for a long time.

Of course if Favreau succeeds I'll be one of the first to admit I was wrong. But hollywood continues to get these films wrong and I just don't see that changing.

I think I.M. is going to be a surprise hit, like 300 is. I think it may/could be X-2 and Spidey 2 good.

Well, given all of the talent involved, especially Stan Winston, I think this is shaping up to be one of Marvel's better movies.

Sorry I don't have anything inflamatory to say like most everyone else, but that is simply how I feel.

I rank'em from best to worst thusly:
1.Superman
2.Spiderman 2
3.Batman Begins
4.X-men 2
5.Superman 2
6.Batman
7.Spiderman
8.Batman Returns
9.Fantastic Four
10.Hulk
11.Superman Returns
12.X-Men
13.Blade
14.Ghostrider
15.Blade 2
16.Daredevil
17.Electra
18.Blade Trinity
19.Superman 3
20.Batman Forever
21.Superman 4
22.Batman & Robin

I'd say IM could definitely make it into the top 7 or possibly into the top 5 from what I've seen so far. One thing I know, if Marvel screws this up then there isn't much hope left. Studios getting their characters wrong I can accept but what are we going to do if Marvel themselves get their own character wrong? I have confidence though from what I've seen so far that they won't get this one wrong.

I have to say, my personal rankings match up pretty well with yours. Only changes I would make are switching Batman Returns and Fantastic Four with Blade. Aside from that, we line up very closely.

As far as quality Iron Man will be right up there with Batman Begins and Spider-Man. As far as Box Office 175-225 million. It's gonna really depend on the competition's impact. I suspect TDTESS will move.

It'll be better than the crappy Mavel films we have right now.
Iron Man has a competent director who understands the character and actors who actually have talent.

^^^

I hope so. Everything can happen, though I doubt Favreau will make another flop.

Jeff Bridges and RDJ are quite intelligent and have been known to question a director if they don't like something, so I think we'll have soe great stuff coming out of this!

Favs got to hear the best and the worst of filmmaking from his stint doing Dinner for Five, which had to be pretty educational. I think this thing's in great hands.
