Whiteout

I've got a comic about the 1962 escape from Alcatraz that I'm illustrating for the California Parks Commission.

Whiteout was a 4 issue limted comic book series that was collected into a paperback graphic novel. Same with the sequel, Whiteout:Melt.

Is that the Escape the old Clint Eastwood movie was about ?

Do you know if they will be making the movie off just the one book or using Melt as well ?

So for anyone that's read the graphic novel, would the movie be spoiled if read ahead of time?

"Is that the Escape the old Clint Eastwood movie was about ?"

Yep, but a lot of the information in the original book it was based on is outdated. New research, the declassification of a lot of files, and continued investigation has led experts to reevaluate the old conclusions. We also aren't going to do the Hollywood thing of making good guys out of the protagonists or turning the warden (a genial guy who loosened things for the prisoners and did lariat tricks at birthday parties for the children of on-site staff) into a brutal, sadistic bad-ass. Patrick M is fun to watch, and he chewed the scenery well, but that portrayal was was flat-out character assassination.

"Do you know if they will be making the movie off just the one book or using Melt as well ?"

Right now I don't know. They can pick and choose scenes and characters from both of them, but that doesn't mean they will. I've had a look at some scripts and treatments and they're all very different, so there's no telling how close anything will be. I'm not too worried though. After all, I've spent years bracing myself for the possibility of a trailer that said "Adam Sandler IS Charlie Stetko."

" So for anyone that's read the graphic novel, would the movie be spoiled if read ahead of time?"

I don't think so. Go ahead and read the trade paperbacks. Even if the movie makers follow the plot closely, they're almost certain to diverge at some point, and there no knowing when that would be. That'll keep the tension level high.

I live near Gimili and read about the film in the paper on Friday, so the local media should have photos and information about what was happening during filming in March.

Very interesting, will this be a mini like Whiteout or released straight in TPB format ?

lol:D i certainly think from the art ive seen Kate Beckinsale is a better fit for Carrie than Reese Witherspoon would have been
I heard that the second book is more action packed,i wonder if they may take some of those sequences and fit them into the initial Whiteout story,

WonderCon 07: Whiteout
Silver on upcoming Dark Castle projects.
by Eric Moro

"The next picture we're doing is a graphic novel by Greg Ruka called Whiteout," said Silver. "It starts shooting on Monday in Manitoba with Kate Beckinsale as Carrie Stetko. And it's going to be the coldest thriller of all time. So that's the next thing we have out."

Whiteout tells the story of U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko as she investigates the first murder on the continent of Antarctica. However, the officer must race against the clock to solve the case before the impending arctic winter lest she be trapped on the ice with a killer and no chance for reinforcements.

Cool more info on it, you know the story would make a good computer game I think.
I look forward to a teaser which we wont get till like late this year or something lol.

Hey guys:

That download link I gave for the .pdfs is completely dead. I'm pretty sure you killed it. :) I've put up scans of the complete first issue at my comicspace site:
http://comicspace.com/stevelieber
Read it there and spread the link wherever you like.

There should be a new edition (with a new cover by me) of Whiteout and its sequel coming out in a few months.

Just last week at WonderCon I stopped by the booth for the publisher and met the illustrator on the Whiteout GN's. He's a great guy, had a great time talking to him (and he drew me a completely badass sketch that's up on my wall now). I'm quite interested to see how this turns out as a comic book adap in the end. I'm fearing it'll become a glossed over studio film and lose some of the depth that the graphic novel had... We'll see, I'm interested.

And I love Beckinsale in good roles! And she's soooo attractive!!

i thnk there was already a movie called whiteout, it was about snowboarding

March 15, 2007

Gabriel Macht will star opposite Kate Beckinsale in action-thriller Whiteout, the first movie from Joel Silver's Warners-based Dark Castle Entertainment. Tom Skerritt and Columbus Short also will star.

Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute domestically and in most territories overseas, under its deal with Dark Castle.

Director Dominic Sena is shooting the film, based on Greg Rucka's comic book miniseries, in Canada. Screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber adapted for the big screen.

The story revolves around a lone U.S. marshal assigned to Antarctica who has three days to solve a murder mystery before the continent's dark winter begins. Macht plays a U.N. operative who is also investigating the murder.

Duo Joins Beckinsale in Whiteout
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
March 19, 2007

Alex O'Loughlin and Columbus Short have joined Whiteout for Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment. Kate Beckinsale already has boarded the action thriller being helmed by Dominic Sena.

Based on Greg Rucka's acclaimed comic book miniseries, the story revolves around a lone U.S. marshal (Beckinsale) assigned to Antarctica who is investigating the continent's first murder. With only three days until winter, the marshal must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into darkness and she is stranded with the killer.

O'Loughlin will play a cocky pilot whose hard-partying antics get him into hot water with the marshal. Short will play a wet-behind-the-ears pilot who becomes the marshal's ally during the investigation.

Jon & Erich Hoeber penned the adaptation. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute. Shooting is set to begin this month in Montreal.

Got the 2 Whiteout books for my Birthday:up:

Just read the two of them today. Really enjoyed it and I'm disappointed with the changes they've made for the movie. I understand where they're coming from but that's what helped make the first book so great. 2 women trying to solve these murders on a cold continent full of men. And the UN? UN is lame.
