Superman Returns Who did Routh test against and beat out for the role of Superman

hmm.... so those are the final 3.

looking at that set i can see why Routh won the role: he has the height (taller than Reynolds) and can match the good looks Cavill has (Reeve look-alike and all that). the only thing going against him was the brown eyes, which was quickly fixed with contacts.

I guess it all depends of what kind of movie it was... if I would've been in charge Routh wouldn't have been the winner between those three. It would've been Cavill... guy looks like Supes but without looking like Reeve (to avoid the comparisons), has a very serious acting skills, is somewhat tall and has enough youth for him to be still a fresh face after the third movie in the franchise.

yeah i understand. to me it would've been simply down to Cavill or Routh. although before i was so adamant that whoever would be Supes have blue/ light colored eyes i still woul've opted for Routh in the end, lack of experience and all. there's something about Routh's presence that gives him the edge over Cavill. i think maybe there's a more "masculine" bearing to Routh than Cavill does, not that i'm saying that Cavill isnt manly, heck no, its just Routh has it more, to me anyway. and the height man, it just cant be beat.

I actually think that how masculine Superman is is determinated by his acts, and in SR Routh didn't demonstrate that masculine Superman anywhere, basically because the role Dougherty and Harris wrote wasn't very masculine precisely... in a certain way I'm glad Cavill didn't get the role for this concrete film, because as you say... he would've been given a much harder criticism than Routh because of his appearance. In a certain way these three candidates embody very different aspects of Superman and the one that won was the closest to the Reeve incarnation, which in a certain way was more in line with SR being a continuation of the Reeve films. I can totally see why Singer chose him... but that doesn't mean anything to me, since for me Singer already made his first erroneous choice in the type of movie he made...

You mean Mike O'Hearn.

But did Jim Caviezel seriously do a screentest?
Not that we know of. It was just rumored and somehow everyone picked up on it.

You know, this guy would have been good too. I actually like his look better than Routh (sorry Routh) He looks a lot more like Reeve than Routh, but also he looks a lot more like the comic book Superman and more stoic than Routh.

I can kind of see Reeve in the nose and mouth area, but I dont know if he looks any more like Reeve than Routh. I guess neither of them really look like Reeve.

This is how he would have looked like in the clasic suit minus the greasy hair (which is one of the things I think they should hav abandoned as Supe's in the 90's didnt have greasy hair).

I seriously doubt ANYone else auditioned. Singer intereviewed Routh and "found his Superman", as he has said many times.

They probably advertised for the role, as the studio may have required, and who knows maybe they did some adhoc auditions with a goal of simply meeting studio requirements, where going in they knew they'd never hire someone else, but I even doubt that.

Routh had this in the bag the moment Singer met him, period.

A few actors did go in to audition, but Singer had all of the tapes from the previous Ratner and McG auditions. As far as them auditioning to be Superman, they all did at one time. I think I remmber hearing of a few guys actually auditioning after Singer was on board too. The guy who was in Colleras film auditioned for Singer as he posted it somewhere that he did. I believe that one guy from the shaving commercial did as well. But, like I said, since they had all of the audition tapes from the previous productions, Singer didn't have to recall them back in except for the few he narrowed down from watching the tapes.

Suit looks great, but that guy looks younger than Routh to me. I dont know what it is, I am not feeling him as Supes. It actually might be the hair.

Caviezel was the studio pic. Caviezel was so certain that he was going to be Superman that in a TV guide channel interview when he was asked what is next project was(Post-Passion Mania) he responded, "Something to do with two red boots and a cape." The studio gave Singer a certain time period to find his 'unknown' or they were going to go with Jim. I think Singer ,regardless of the wanting unknown front, would've liked Jim and Jim would've also helped propagate Singer's Vision of Superman as 'Jesus in a cape'. But Singer was p*ssed with Caviezel because he backed out of playing Cyclops, so he didn't really want to work with him again.

This is also why Millar was so certain Caviezel would get the part and also put money on it.

Well Singer also said that rumor was bogus. But then again, Singer said a lot of stuff, so who knows. Miller also said a lot of false stuff. He said that Warner's was not going to let McG direct it, but they were a go and even came out publically and said that the only reason there wasn't a McG movie the week after was because McG would not get on the plane as he was afraid to fly. This was confirmed by McG. Millar was also saying that Warner's was bringing in another director when they were not, and Singer had not even been to Hawaii to sit with the wack pack to write out the draft to take to Warner's to yet. Then when Singer was on, all of a sudden he said "See. See." even though Singer was not even in the loop at that point and still working on X-3.

does anybody notice that when reading recent interviews about casting and production they are so vastly different from what we actually heard years ago? feels like the Hollywood equivalent of the Spin machine.

For those interested in Cavill... some recent pictures of him:

^^He's starting loose the babyface and he's bulked as well. I hope his career takes off. He's obviously got talent after doing well in his Superman and Bond screentests as Kevin Roegele pointed out.

Rumor has it Singer liked Cavill's McG screentest -same way he discoverd Routh- and is considering him for the lead role Logan's Run.

Now this is what the suit SHOULD have looked like!

A little smaller \S/ and some tweak on the boots and it's very nice.

For those who think Routh was to young, this guy looks like his younger brother. Plus that is not Superman hair to me, but that is just my opinion.

Yeah. He wouldn't have worked for Returns, but if they ever pull a Hulk and restart the franchise, then.....
