Who here watches movies that depict a "what if" scenario when it comes to history and shows a different timeline that what really happened in our universe? If you do, discuss the genre here and post your favorites. I'll start.

Some history info&FACTS are way off,But I still enjoy the movies since there about something else anyway!!

Would Captain America: The First Avenger count as an alternate history film?

Would Captain America: The First Avenger count as an alternate history film?

Yes. There was no actual super soldier formula that resulted in the creation of Captain America during WWII...so having a movie set in the past and depicting events that were counter to what we know happened, it becomes an alternate history movie. But basically any superhero movie is an alternate history movie because at this point there are no superpowered heroes in existence.

As to the thread starters question....yes, I love this type of thing (in movies and TV shows) FATHERLAND was a good one (haven't been able to see it in years though)...an old one I liked was SHADOW ON THE LAND http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063589/ but I haven't been able to see it for decades, not sure how well it holds up.

If Captain America counts and I think it does then it's definitely one of my favorite alternate history movies for sure.

I would say no because it doesn't really focus on history. It's more of a fantasy that happens to be set in World War II.

I love alternate history movies. I'ld love to see a movie based on Phillip K Dick's "The man in the High Castle" or maybe Dan Abnett's "Sir Triumff" which is about what would happen if Queen Elizabeth I had married the Spanish prince rather than become the Virgin Queen.

Exactly. You could call every movie that plays in the past as an "alternate history" movie. Do people really think, for example, "Saving Private Ryan" is a realistic movie about the war?

I'd say an alternate history movie is one that really plays with the topic.

No mention for Watchmen?

I like alternate histories. I only wish there were more books and movies that dealt with the subject.

I have no idea how The Man in the High Castle could be turned into a movie. So much f the plot revolved around the post-war trade in American memorabilia. It wasn't exactly gripping stuff.

Well, there are some writers, like Harry Turtledove, who has made a career on writing alternate history fiction

The BBC currently plans to make this into a miniseries at last I knew.

i used to like reading the old what ifs from marvel. as far as movies and tv shows i would say star trek. in deep space nine(my favorite of the series) they did some altering of history. they made the ferengi's the aliens found in area 51. also in Enterprise in the 50's the vulcans gave us velcro.

as far as movies one that comes to mind is idiocracy.

I do like alternate history although I haven't read any books yet like Turtledove. The Philadelphia Experiment 2 is another what if the Nazis won with a twist. I wouldn't call it a favorite but it definitely qualifies.

JFK, good movie, full of enough horse****, for me at least, to be an alternate reality movie.

I would have liked to have seen a movie or TV series on an alternate history where the Confederacy had won the Civil War.

There's a difference between historical fiction and creating an alternate history.

Captain America is (pulp) historical fiction, but it doesn't particularly deal with any of the real events of WWII as Cap never engages with the actual Nazis in the movie.

Inglourious Basterds, Watchmen and the show Dr. Who actually change the course of history with their narratives.

I believe Spike Lee produced something along those lines called the CSA (Confederate States of America), but I've never seen it.

Given this is the Hype, I'd recommend Neil Gaiman's Marvel 1602 (Marvel characters changing early 17th century) and his Sandman as well.

Does everyone know that Star Ship Troopers is actually an alternative history where the Nazis won World War II and conquered the world, it is an unstated element of the plot background.

What if?

That's a series I think Marvel did in the 90s as a comic book series. One of my favorites.

You mean Harry Turtledove's "Southern Victory" book series? That would make an awesome HBO miniseries.

And face it, you can't talk about alternate history without talking Harry Turtledove. He is THE expert on the subgenre.

Nope I did not...

I would like to learn more! "clicks his mouse on the link."

I'm hoping the Coens' next film will be their adaptation of the The Yiddish Policemen's Union. It's a fantastic alternate history novel and they're the perfect directors for its tone and content.
