OKAY Socko...you've convinced me. Michael Gambon is the wisest choice :D

I like Eion Bailey as an actor...but not for Captain America...alhtough I did think he rocked in Band of Brothers. Captain America is more...Matthew Davis from Tigerland and Pearl Harbor if you want to cast people from war movies

Jason Lewis is what alot of people imagine Captain America to look like if he can pull off the part who knows

I would not mind seeing John Cena as Captain America either with good direction anything is possible

I wonder how much people gave Marky mark(Mark Walberg) a hard time since he started as a hip hop artist and he's a great actor

I see John Cena as more of a Conan than Captain America...and I have never seen Jason Lewis act. I think that maybe casting an unknown for Cap is the way to go and then fill out the cast with high profile actors to get the movie's "juice" up.

Rage

Might be a hard sell...even Warner thought that they needed a Hollywood face to be Superman because they thought that Superman alone wasn't enough.

Rage

I don't know about Cena though, I mean he is a wrestler and hasn't done a lot of acting. I haven't seen that one movie about him as the soldier, but he might not be that good of an actor.
He does definatly look the part and if he can act, like really good acting (oscar level, so that its not just a super hero movie or another Daredevil) then I think he would be good.

Eion Bailey might bee good in it.

As for my own suggestion,
What about the guy from Numb3rs?
Dylan Bruno?
http://imdb.com/name/nm0116465/
ColbyScorchedBulgingBiceps.jpg

He is pretty good on Numb3rs, and he sort of looks the part.

A relatively unknown is usually the best way to go for super hero movies in my own opinion. Most of the time with big stars you only notice the star, like on X-Men all I see is Halle Berry as Storm, or Ben Afleck as Daredevil. Even in the Hulk all I saw was Nick Nolte as Hulk's dad.

But from the point of view of the studios, not alot of people know who Captain America is. But a big name might draw them in.

The part, who ever gets it, should be someone who is a great actor and can get lost in the character. And is not just chosen because they are a big name or because they look the part.

The problem is that Ghost Rider went out and cast a movie star and did really well...so I fear that Marvel will attempt to cast a "Movie Star" to play the role instead of the best choice. I could totally see them getting Mark Walberg or Matt Damon...or even or Paul Walker (none of whom I mind as actors...but wouldn't cast as Captain America)

Marvel needs to "go back to formula" and cast the best actor for the role...like they did with Tobey Maguire and Alfred Molina and not fall into the trap of casting Ben Affleck and Nick Cage to get the star power. When Sony cast Tobey...he had starred in a couple movies as a leading man (Cider House Rules, Wonder Boys, Pleasantville, The Ice Storm) and Halle Berry had only done movies like Losing Isaiah, Bullworth and the Flintstones. Jackman had only done aussie tv shows. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan were the "Big Names" Stewart having made his name in the Trek world but not really making it as a movie star. And McKellan had just made a name for himself in Gods and Monsters and Apt Pupil.

LESS BAGGAGE...MORE BELIEVABILITY!!

I think people would be more forgiving, seeing John Malkovich playing the Red Skull, than to see Marky Mark playing Cap. More forgiving of Samuel L. Jackson playing Nick Fury, than seeing Ryan Phillipe as Captain America.

Don't fall into the trap of casting A-list movie stars to play your superheroes... find the best actor for the role.

Rage

indeed, bring back Matt Salinger, the legend !

and while they are at it, bring back Albert Pyun, add some Kickboxing in,

and we can have a great movie.

no seriously,
Jason Lewis looks exactly like Captain America and he isn't that well known is he?

Anyways, If Spielberg directs, he can get anyone he wants and it will make gonads drop !

John Cena?? LMAO, you guys need to stop with the stick green.

Great post - couldnt agree more, Rage.

Quite right - in some cases (BB and hopefully, Iron Man) big name lead casting works, but in others, you just arent going to find an actor who has the right combination of looks, voice and talent (i.e the right ingredients) needed for the role.

Sometimes the best approach is to cast an unknown (or relative unknown) as the lead and pad the cast around him with 'names' to insure box office draw (see SR, Brandon Routh had some mighty big boots to fill - argueably some of the biggest boots in hollywood history, such was the legacy left by Christopher Reeve - and I for one thought he did a good job, and look forward to seeing him grow more into the role in the future)

Jason Lewis certainly seems to be a big favourite with some folk on these boards, and I agree he looks the part (a cleft chin is a must for the role, obviously), but I confess that I've never seen him in anything. I'm not the kinda guy to base an opinion without seeing evidence first so I cant pass judgement if he's be right for the role or not.

I simply ask this to anyone who has seen him in anything - Do you think he has the necessary attributes needed to play Cap (aside from his looks)? Would he be able to give off that 'air of authority' (you know - he talks, people listen etc.) that Cap exudes (I know it'll be an origin film with a very green Steve Rogers - but he'd have to demonstrate that quality at some point)

As I said, I can only go by what I've seen but I'd love to see Eureka's Colin Furguson as Cap. A talented TV actor who I'd like to see given a chance at a big, lead film role and while certainly not a 'pretty boy' He's still good-looking enough by traditional standards for Rogers.

Okay, sure - it'd be a stretch (one helluva stretch in fact - CG anyone?) to imagine him as a teenage Steve Rogers, but I could totally buy him as the modern, 'authoritative' Cap that we're all used to seeing every month in the MU.

He even has the chin. :D

I'm probably one of like, two people on this board who likes the idea, but hey, differnet ideas and opinions are what make us unique.

There is a latest picture of Matt Damon from his upcoming film Bourne Ultimatum, it was on a cover of some movie magazine along with Hot Fuzz and Die Hard 4 or 5 or something.
He looks very Captain America buff. His neck his as thick as his head, big chest and arms. He looked like he could be Captain America in that picture.
wish I could find the magazine.

Another strike for Matt Damon: he makes whiney, whispery voice. As Bourne, he's ok because Bourne talks little. Cap commands people, he'd talk a lot and should have a commanding, assured voice.

I think in the acting test, Damon would fail because of his voice.

I agree, to get Captain America just right you need someone with the right look, a great actor, and one who has a commanding voice.

One thing I can't wait to see, and something they must do, is when they have the origin scene.
They should get s skinny actor to play young Steve Rogers, and like they did with Gimmly LOTR, they should digitally put the Captain America actor's face over the skinny actor. Making the buff actor look sickly skinny just for that scene.

Great idea? And here I was thinking CGI body like in Spider-man.

I was thinking...skinny body double who looks close...and then just replace the face with CGI like they did with Peter Parker in Spiderman (I)

Rage

Wasn't it his body that was CGI in Spider-man? Anyway, I think we all agree that they should do what was done in Spider-man (and to some extent X-men: The Last Stand).

Hmm...

John Cena wasn't great in The Marine, but it was his first movie. I dunno, but I see potential in that boy. I could be wrong, but let me see after he gets some more (and better) movies under his belt. If he improves, great choice for cap. If not, start over.

He would need to bulk up (easy with Hollywood personal trainers), but I would screentest James Van Der Beer. Tall, young, athletic, would draw in some fans but isn't a big star.

Also, consider Michael Fassbender from the 300 (Stelios). I may be wrong, but he seemed to be a manly version of Legolas....

The Red Skull? Dolph Lundgren. 6'4", 240lbs, martial artist, military experience, MIT graduate...perfecto. And the Skull should be older (but no senior citizen, late 40s-early 50s).

Justin Hartley. Very good actor. A shame his Aquaman series didn't get picked up.

I can DEFINATELY warm up to this idea.

I think Clove Owen would make a great Steve Rogers and Captain America.
CliveOwen.jpg

I know he isn't an American actor, but He has the look and the build to be him, plus he has done all those action movies, and he is a good actor as well. He could do an American accent, have blond hair and blue eyes in the film, and digitally put his face on a skinny body for the earlier scenes.

test2-2.jpg

Yeah but I don't think the guy can do an American accent to save his life...That is one thick british accent.

Save him for Captain Britain or Union Jack.

Cap must be AMERICAN!!!

I really would love it if they cast Mark Valley as Captain America.
