Who's Gonna Get Snubbed During Awards Season?

ehh... ang lee is sorta an american filmmaker
besides there's always that ONE exception where it didnt happen

the past two years' nominations...
The Counterfeiters (Austria)
Beaufort (Israel)
Katyń (Poland)
Mongol (Kazakhstan)
12 (Russia)
Departures (Japan)
Waltz with Bashir (Israel)
Revanche (Austria)
The Class (France)
The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany)

there were plenty of better (and more popular) foreign films made than those film fest junkie films..(ex. Let The Right One In)

Age really has nothing to do with it. Foster's role in Taxi Driver is a very different beast than Chloe's role in Kick-Ass. She was fantastic, obviously, but not at the level that Foster was, in my opinion. But they are two very different films despite being about vigilantes, with very different characters. So it's hard to compare really.

I sadly think that Shutter Island will be forgotten about because it was released all the way back in February. Hopefully I am very wrong, because Scorcese directed the **** outta that movie.

QFFT. The year's most underrated film. Why it is in the 60's on RT I have no ****ing idea. I loved it so much. And DiCaprio is also likely to get snubbed. The cinematography, the editing, (seriously, give Shoonmaker an Oscar already) are all wonderful.

i never found dicaprio to be an amaaaazing actor...

he's good in every role he's ever played, but there not much of a stretch from one another.

he was was pretty much the same in inception as shutter island..twist aside

his roles are usually just meant to be good enough to carry the plot and supporting characters, and he does it well.. but not oscar worthy

Well now Chloe Moretz has two great performances this year.

Probably been mentioned here, but I'd say Scott Pilgrim vs The World will probably get snubbed for editing and art direction awards. I know it's a polarizing film and all that, but it was incredibly well made in both of those areas, and deserves at least a nomination in both.

QFT. The FX/CGI are also very good.

But I wouldn't say it's exactly polarizing since it got mostly great reviews. I think what happened is that it opened on the same weekend as Expendables.. and some of the fans of that movie like to troll in the SP forums a lot. Have you seen the IMDB SP boards? Jeez some people are so insecure and immature.

Well, I mean..let's not really go there. I think we've had enough of that discussion spanning something like three different threads here :o

But yeah, I think it flopping probably killed its chances of getting nominated for even those awards. Reminds of Speed Racer, which also didn't see a nomination for Special Effects and Art Direction, and it definitely deserved it, but flopped and had a pretty bad reception. I don't think that should have that kind of effect on technical awards, but I guess that's why I'm not on the Academy board :o

I know exactly what you mean. Really, we all know the Oscars are a fraud. It's all about the money.

But it's nice when they actually do acknowledge something like this. It shows that there some people with good taste still exist in the Academy.

I think Jesse Eisenberg is gonna get snubbed for The Social Network

Flopping at the BO isn't shouldn't really be a reason not to recognised at the BO. Look at Hurt Locker. Critics pushed for the movie to get nominated and the production company and the studio were also the one constantly tryingto get the movie recognised.

If it weren't for that people were never even ehard about Hurt Locker. Promoting your movie is a big part of getting the movie recognised. And that stuff costs money. It a movie is nominated and winds up winning , the earnings increase. But studios are hesitant to pay money to promote their movies come oscar season because they aren't sure if they can get those nom ( shutter island is a good example of this.).

I was mostly referring to technical awards (editing, effects, art direction). Seems like big money makers like The Dark Knight and Transformers are more likely to be out there because the Academy feels they have to represent them in some way, but definitely won't represent them in the big awards (at least before the 10 nomination extension), at least that's the way it looked to me. But you're right, promotion and lobbying is a big part of it, but I think BO performance does factor in there too, since studios would be less likely to try and lobby for a movie like Speed Racer and The Fountain, since they flopped, for just the technical awards they definitely deserve at least a nomination for.
