Who's your daddy?

Sorry can I just bend the topic slightly and ask, how is it that it seems as though everyone comes from some sort of Irish backround or is part Irish?

I'm not really asking anyone in particular or doubting what any of yous have said by any means. It just seems as though when I'm read books, magazines or watch TV, people from particularly America always say they are half/part Irish & I'd essentially like to know how a place like Ireland could have populated half the planet it seems.. :D

My dad's side was traced back to England, although they've lived in West Virginia since the late 1600s, so who knows what else is in there. All else I know about my paternal ancestry is there's a Cherokee great-great-great-grandmother or something to that effect.

My mom's side is mostly German. Schlosser is the non-Anglicized version of my mom's maiden name. They came in the early 1700s, and my mom's mom was the granddaughter of German immigrants on both sides. There is also a Sizemore in there though....does anyone know if Sizemore is Irish or Scottish?

My dad's name is Taleni. Born in Western Samoa and raised in Hawaii. He was adopted and raised by his aunt. His mother was too young and her boyfriend or whatever had skipped out on her. To this day, he has no idea who his father is. I remember him telling me how he almost did the same thing to my mom. But decided against it because he didn't want to be a chicken **** like his father.

He enlisted in 1977 and served in the Marine Corp for 12 years. He had anger issues during that time. It cost him a demotion in rank here and there. He called it a career at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He now works as an civilian engineer for US Army Corps of Engineers.

Other than that moment about his father. He doesn't talk much about his past and doesn't get into touchy subjects. He can be a comedian at times. And he can be a dick when he drinks.

Love ya' pops.

My Dad's name is Blane. He was in the Marines back in the late 60's stationed at Quantico where he met my mom, and knocked her up.

His words to her when she told him? "Looks like you have a real problem, then."

He's never been in my life for one day. Given what my mom has told me about him, I'm not sure I ever do, and now that I'm 40, I ever will.

My dad's name is Jimmy. He is in his 70s and is retired from the Army and a private business after that. He plays golf 3-4 times a week and has a good handicap (about +2). He just had his second heart attack a few weeks ago, but is doing well now. Everyone says that he looks like he is in his late 50s. He is a country boy and is very laid back.
I hope I am half the man that he is.

I've totally noticed that too. It's weird. I don't have any Irish blood, I'm English with Italian roots.

To answer the question, I barely see my dad anymore and we don't really have any sort of close relationship at all. Also I'm pretty sure he stole money from me one time. Lame.

My dad is a former marine. He is a retired one at that, 20 years. He works graveyard shift at post office...has a strong work ethnic. His body is falling apart...diabetes, knees, shoulders, arthistis. A part of me loves him, but another part doesn't. He always hot and cold around us. Has anger issues. Gullible. He fell victim to that SMC scam. Sell stuff from home via online business. I don't wanna be like him, but I share the anger issuses and hot and cold emotions. I never wanna be married. His marriage is in crumbles. My mom barely knew him when they married. He pulled a 180 after they married.

My Dad is a decent man, but a person not equipped for parenthood and I've forgiven him for that.

In a lot of ways I'm like him, in some other ways I wish I could be like him and a few ways I hope I'm never like him.

Some days I miss him and think about him and other times I don't. When people ask me about him, I always have a hard time putting just how I feel about him into words.

Oh and I'm half Irish as well haha.

A lot of former soldiers and cops. Wonder what that says about us fanboys...

My father's name is Robert. He grew up on a farm in West Virginia (where they've now found a **** ton of natural gas so he might get to retire fairly soon, which is amazing because he's never been able to save money for retirement).

He wanted to go into the Air Force, but some kind of vision issue kept him out. So he went into the Army Reserves so he could go to college, was a Sergeant and drove a tank. He was stationed in Germany and went around Europe. He never saw combat, though I'm told he was "this close" to going to Vietnam. After he got out of the army, he apparently did anything and everything, including managing a KFC, trying law school, which he hated, and being a paramedic, back when I guess they didn't have to be paid. He was a drummer at some point, and he went to college WVU when it was the number one party school in the nation, and majored in political science. He married a woman named "Starla", and divorced her after one year, then met my mom and married her within 6 months, and,had me at 32. The one thing I remember about him as a child is that while he got angry, he was really quiet about it. His quiet words would piss you off more than anything else. The other thing I remember is one time I wanted a Quick Change Bruce Wayne, from the BATMAN RETURNS collection, and I called and called stores trying to find one. So the store tells me they have one more. And my dad, who worked in Cleveland, like an hour away from where we were, tells me he'll go pick it up after work. The store refuses to hold it for me. So I call back an hour or so later, to make sure it's still there, and the guy goes "I'm sorry, we just sold it". And I'm distraught. And then my father comes home late that night, and I'm crying about the figure, and he just smiles and tosses me a plastic bag. He'd taken off work immediately after finding out there was one and driven down to get it for me, then driven back up to Cleveland to finish work, then back down after work.

He worked in the insurance industry for oh, 20 years or so, and then decided he hated taking orders and taking the blame as a manager and quit. He went down to Nashville during the tornados about 10 years ago, and in one month, he made enough money to pay off all car and home debts, buy a van and the latest insurance gadgets, and set up his own independent adjusting business, which I think he wants me to take over at some point. I always thought I'd never want a job like his, and when I got into myself, almost on accident, I really enjoyed it.

My dad's father died when I was a few months old, due to some kind of malpractice, I'm told. Then my grandmother came to live with us when I was 18 and my father took care of her.

He loves auto racing, and he's been to that "drive an Indy car" thing in Indiana several times, loves going to the Indy 500, and to the local racetrack near Mansfield, OH, Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.

He's a handyman, and pretty much built anything we needed. We helped him build a treehouse when we were kids, and he and I rebuilt an engine so I could have a car as a teenager.

Now he loves hosting neighborhood "drinking parties" in the backyard that he and my mother converted into this weird party garden thing with a firebit and a clothesline system that they show movies on.

I'm kind of apprehensive about losing him now, because my friend just lost her father recently. I try to spend time with him when I can, but it's difficult as I get older.

My dad is Mohammed Aslam Arain,he was born somewhere in Pakistan,he is surprisingly okay, sometimes. But for the most part he sucks in general. He is super cheap and has opinions that are silly and which makes no sense. He tends to take things too seriously and isn't a big fan of having fun,and he's a really generic Muslim guy. In seriousness,he actually doesn't like anything even.

People have picked up on the 2nd part. Don't mess with my double entendre.

If you have a problem, email a moderator and explain your position. I shouldn't have to be saying this.

My father is Alfred Jr. he is a 49 year old of italian ancestry. He is one of the most qualified diesel mechanics in the mid atlantic. He was a jock in high school and has become a muscle bound 240 pound blue collar workhorse of a human being. Despite constantly coming home covered in grease and grime. My mother and him have OCD when it comes to the cleanliness of their home and belongings. They are both made for eachother because of their workaholic nature and constant projects on there home.

My dad is mostly a mystery to me, and I see him everyday. He never talks about his past or his childhood(My mother told me he was horribly mistreated by his parents). Him and my mother were also married before to other people, with me being the spawn of their love affair. All of this I uncovered just recently, he still doesn't know that I am aware of this I believe.

As I have gotten older I have been able to look at him with more clarity. He is overall a good man and means well, but he will always be a slave to his belongings with his tendencies. I have grown indifferent towards him.

My dad is a former Navy electrical engineer who now works as a supervisor for a company that makes Fuel Cell generators. He's a science geek, and I'm an art geek. The geek definitely comes from him.
