Why Can't DC Get it right?

The more I look at sources outside these threads, the more I realize this "Marvel owned DC at Comic Con" is just a matter of fans not seeing the forest through the trees.

With the level of complaining on these boards, I was actually surprised at the result. Not only that, but I found another poll on these very boards...

The funny thing is, when I talk to comic fans who dont come to message boards, they dont turn every comic movie discussion into some stupid pissing contest. They're more excited about seeing individual heroes than one company winning over the other.

Dude, I cannot come up with an appropriate label for you. Go back to the first page or two of this thread. You started the wiz fest. Your the one that entrenched yourself and encouraged others to follow. You went out of the way to attempt derail a serious question and acted like this topic was an intrusion on your message board.

Now your mister innocent? That's rich! Oh a label has come mind. Ever hear of a HYPOCRITE?

Well, one actually. The '89 film was a huge hit and was an extremely important milestone in the superhero genre, a big step forward in studios taking superhero films seriously, affording them big budgets and making them with a dark tone. The series veered off course with the Schumacher films and the genre needed X-Men to get back on course, but the '89 film was a very important building block in the genre's history.

You are right, both of Tim Burton's movies were positives and DID make a huge step forward for other Super-Hero movies to become main stream.

Back in "those" days I didn't even remotely think a quality Spider-Man movie would ever be made. Beyond the friction between the few of us, it is a good time seeing the movie's we couldn't even hope for being made.

I think we all could agree the poor quality (Man-Thing, Elecktra) movies hurt us all.

Absolutely.

As for who's taken the most chances, Marvel has certainly taken more chances in terms of the number of characters they've brought to the screen, but Warners has taken more chances in terms of the tone and style of their films. And I include in that films actually based on comic books, like Superman Returns, 300, and Watchmen, as well as comic book style films like Speed Racer and the upcoming Sucker Punch.

The thing about Warner Bros is that despite all of the criticism from fans who are hyper-focused on superhero films, and who therefore judge the studio primarily based on their output within the genre, they're actually the most stable and consistently successful studio in Hollywood. Of course they've made some bad films and had some big flops - as all major studios have - but they're nevertheless the most solid outfit in town. But the two guys who have been at the top of the totem pole for a long, long time - Alan Horn and Barry Meyer - don't really have a feel for films that skew edgy or for geek cinema, so their output in that arena has been hugely hit and miss based on whether they give the greenlight to producers and directors who know what they're doing or not.

Now, Horn and Meyer are retiring next year and power has been flowing more into Jeff Robinov's hands over the last couple of years in preparation for him taking over Horn's job. Robinov has sensibilities that skew a lot younger and are much more geek-friendly. He championed the reorganization that led to the formation of DC Entertainment. So the past is prologue and we'll see where we go from here.

For the hundreth time, no one is saying that Marvel is better than DC in films! They're just saying that Marvel did better than DC at Comic, and there's no doubt about that.

Thats just one poll that includes more than movies. Majority of websites and people believe that Marvel definitely dominated the weekend in terms of films.

as a fan of both, Marvel destroyed DC because they completely own the rights to the characters (Thor, etc) so they went all the way and it worked like a charm.

The big problem with the Spidey movies being made back then was the technology. I believe someone else mentioned this as well. Now the technolgy is there to allow the characters to be realized as they were in the comics.

Anyone who remembers the 70's spider-man TV show, knows how rediculous it can look. And actually for the production quality of the time, I thought it looked pretty good, but nothing compared to the current films.

As far as the poor quality movies they do effect other movies coming out of that studio. the Silver Surfer movie was shelved partially because of the lack of response from FF:ROTSS, and also because of the failure of Wolverine.

Hopefully Marvel will get all of it's properties in house. Until then we just have to wait and see.

I don't even know why you guys even bother to talk to that dude(TheBatman). If you say anything negative about DC, you are labeled a Marvel fanatic or troll. And I agree, Marvel owned DC at SDCC, but I'm hoping that DC gets their act together because I'd love to see a Flash movie. But again, I don't think it's DC, it's the WB.

But even with the average Comic Con performance, I believe that the Green Lantern film's going to be good and a Flash film will be made.

I don't care about the competition between DC and Marvel much, I just want to see DC films.

Next year, I bet DC will ComicCon our @$$es inside out

I just hope it's more than Batman 3, so I have the desire to go to the panels.

Probably Batman, Superman, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern

^ and no one will/would say a thing on that.

S'pose that depends on whether a "Why can't Marvel Get it right?" topic is in existence for people to bring it up in...

I doubt it....more than likely, a thread like that would be considered trolling, lol

It wasnt. Why would it? Who else would they be talking about? Again, I agree...I dont know why they bother to talk to me. Especially Spidey Quad. If I wanted that kind of conversation, I'd talk to my five year old nephew.

Yeah, about that.....

I'm hoping that a Flash movie gets made or even that Supermax movie with Green Arrow. Does it sound good? Not really but I'm confident that Goyer won't let us down. He heard so much crap about Blade Trinity and he's probably just looking to redeem himself. But I'm sure that movie has fallen into the dreaded "in development" hole. :csad:

If anything, WB will probably wait and see if the Green Lantern is successful before greenlighting Flash into actual production. They hired screenwriters, but they always do that. I won't be satisfied until it goes into actual production.

Are you crazy? You cant say those types of things. WB is horrible. WB never does anything right, and they wont until they make a Flash and Wonder Woman movie.

But Seriously, as far as these boards go, WB wont get half the credit they deserve on certain things. There hasnt been a superhero franchise Fox didnt butcher, but WB is still evil in certain people's eyes. As you said, they've done good and bad things, and it was ultimately their decision to reorganize their superhero projects into DCE. They've realized their mistakes, but again they wont get the credit for it because they wont do exactly what the fanboys want them to, or do things exactly like marvel.

The DC heroes are all pretty expensive propositions. Green Lantern is actually not a sure-fire thing...and I would suggest that it is likely that it's the riskiest choice out of the top tier DC heroes.

So, if this massive risk pays off, then they will start green-lighting more movies. It makes no financial sense to flood the market with risky, expensive movies when you have barely tested the waters.

My guess is that WB is cautiously moving ahead on scripts and initial details...

If Green Lantern tanks...expect a scaled back announcement slate at next year's Comic Con revolving around Batman and Superman. If Green Lantern is a hit (even moderately) expect things like Flash and Wonder Woman to have some huge announcements.

With the studio currently bankrolling Green Lantern, Batman and Superman films (in addition to all of their other franchises), you really can't expect much more from them without it being a release slate nightmare.
