Why Can't DC Get it right?

Harry Potter 7 and Green Lantern are WB's big budget releases for summer 2011, but as a major studio they of course have other summer films, too. They have five films slated for wide release next summer under the Warners banner and two under the New Line banner, together representing a mix of genres targeted at various demographics.

That's because WB is a real studio with mainstream concepts and a successful track record in movies. Marvel is a rookie...with nothing but superheroes on their radar...so they are rolling the dice and hoping for the best.

So, Marvel will play no part in any sort of X-Men exposure? No X-Men comic event to hype the movie? Yeah, right...

WB has two movies to promote...to two very different audiences.

I was just talking about Marvel Studios. They have nothing to do with the X-Men movies.

But promoting is so much more than just the studio. Toys, cartoons, comic book hype, magazine covers, McDonalds Happy Meals, sponsors commercials...and Marvel has three movies vying for attention. There will be an impact.

Honestly, I'm not feeling to good about Cap's chances next summer. Thor comes out in May and has no competition...but it seems GL, Cap, and the X-men are way to close. I wish GL was released during the holidays as planned. Despite what people say I really don't think Cap is a summer tentpole movie. I can honestly see that movie doing TIH type numbers. It would probably do better if released at a different time of the year. Why am I bringing that up in this thread? Because if a Cap movie bombs, then it doesn't bode to well for the genre. As stated before, if GL bombs, it will hurt DC's chances for other heroes to have films but if both Cap and GL bomb................that's not a good thought.

Well the truth is they all can't be smash hits, we're increasingly being bombarded with superhero films, law of averages says some will crash.

Neither of those looks correct to me. The first looks MORE correct, except the lines should, I think, go out closer to the outer ring. (Also the lines look a little too fine to me.)

The main issue I have with the second one is that the lines of the V should be pretty much parallel to the other upper lines, and the other lines should go through the inner circle a bit.

But they are actually pretty similar designs, and IMHO within the range that is easily recognizable as the Avarice symbol.

Cap's got the baby boomer generation, so the elderly may actually give the movie a boost. I remember back when they killed Cap in the comics, for the first and only time I was seeing old people come into the local comic shop to pick up Captain America comics.

I could be wrong, that's just my 2 cents.

I don't think any of them will bomb, but it's matter of how's gonna have legs and which film will capture the imagination of the general public. What movie will people still talk about way after Summer.

That has yet to be determined.

Eh?

While it's true that if GL were to bomb it would hurt chances for other DC film characters, Cap bombing won't affect the genre. Everyone will move on to the next one, just like with any fantasy or science fiction film.

Given how packed next year is there's every possibility one, if not more than one could crash. Next year is gonna be a very rough year, it's borderline ridiculous.

Origins completely sucked away any interest I had in the X-men film franchise

You got it right. Do you remember any Wolverine specials during X-Men Origin: Wolverine opening. Maybe there are some specials on Marvel.com but other than that, nada.

Marvel owns their toy company...so no First Class toys? No new cartoon?

I'll be the first to admit that I avoid X-men comic books, but there's no way that marvel didn't merch the living heck out of Wolverine to coincide with the movie. This time, Marvel has to cross=promote their X-Men reboot while they are also promoting two other, harder to sell properties...and competing with everyone else as well.

What toy company? All Marvel toys stuff are outsourced to Hasbro. There's no "Marvel Direct" or anything. Toybiz has been defunct for some years. As for X-Men cartoons, there's always any form of it every 6-7 years, so it's not something out of the ordinary that they have the last X-Men cartoon during the same years.

No, there's no special Wolverine series to coincide with the 2009 movie but one-shot most probably. Certainly not like Iron Man splitting in 2 books Invincible and Legacy during/after IM 2. Or impending at least 4 books (including mini) for each Thor & Cap. Marvel must have thought Wolverine or Spider-Man will sell themselves without promotions. They're already famous.

BTW, wouldn't it dumb for Marvel to heavily promote Fox's X-Men when they could be almost ignorant, just wait the movie to bomb and Fox relinquish the license at last? After this Marvel could make a proper X-Men universe by themselves.

Ah...as a non toy buyer, I was unaware that Marvel drove their toy division into bankruptcy. Did they also drive their card division into bankruptcy or is that still around? They'll probably handle movies much better than toys and cards anyway, right? It's not like theyd flood the market or anything.

I doubt Marvel WANTS an X-Men movie to bomb...

Marvel didn't drive it into bankruptcy, they bought it, retooled it into Marvel Toyz and do other things...I hear they might be relaunching as a full blown toy company in the next couple years

Either they own a toy company or they dont...it cant be both...

I dont care either way...they WILL be pushing X Men in toys next summer, competing with their own product.

But they probably want it to underperformed so they get back the rights. Getting the X-Men license and give to an internal/Disney studio is probably the ultimate victory.

With Disney backing, they could resurrect Toybiz quickly.

I think you might be underestimating the kind of pr*** they have working over at FOX...

In order for Fox to give up X-Men and all potential characters involved First Class would have to BOMB. It would have to do a third of what Wolverine did. If that happens, then Marvel can then potentially get their heavily damaged franchise back so they can invest a ton of money into hopefully rebooting, after the reboot failed, after a prequel few liked, after a part 3 no one liked...why would they want that??

They can wait for another 3 years because they ought to be busy with the Avengers movies, use different X-Men members to pull interest, and mash it with the greater Marvel universe. Marvel need the Avengers universe to be a hit of course.

BTW, why are we keep talking on Marvel movies...?
