Mostly because the show that came before it was Bat-tastic, and because most of Season 1 and a good chunk of Season 3 weren't that great.

Season 4 just started airing a couple weeks ago, so you won't see it on DVD for awhile.

It's because BTAS was such a great series, I mean a masterpiece of work, that people look at TB as crap. I love BTAS, but still like TB because it's not suppose to be BTAS or replace BTAS in any way. Season One was the set up of things, and I don't count it as bad despite 1-2 episodes which were ok to not needed at all. But it was the season one finale that changed people's minds of it.

Season two, as you said it, was the bad ass season. Things, alot or most, were changed. Season Three kinda went back somewhat. I think it was because Batgirl was used first instead of Robin (Batgirl isn't annoying as people say she is) but there are episodes where the quality went down a knoch (spelling error, I know). Out of Season Three, 4-5 were ok to not needed to bad.

Now with Season Four, changes are happeneing again to the show and it seems to be effecting the show itself as a whole instead of by season.

People bash on it because it is nowhere near on par with the original Batman: The Animated Series, The Adventures of Batman & Robin, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League, or Justice League Unlimited. Shows that had the Bruce Timm interpretation of Batman. This is a brand new Batman which is so far, quite inferior.

Also the first season sucked major ass. It was horrible. It got slightly better with season 2 to the point of mediocrity. Season 3 stayed the same. I haven't seen season 4 yet, but from what I hear, it's gotten much, much better.

Also the designs are just horrible, especially the Joker, Bane, and Mr. Freeze.

Mr. Freeze in The Batman is so much better than the outdated 50's sci-fi-esque Mr. Freeze from BTAS

WOW, JUST WOW :o

Please please PLEASE tell me you're speaking design-wise, Fred. Because if you seriously think that the Mr. Freeze from TB (that has apparently replaced his freeze gun with "badass" ice cold ice puns) is better than the TAS version, then something's wrong.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about designs, because he was responding to someone who complained about the design.

i hear its bad, but i havent even watched the show yet, whats it on? cartoon network or somthing??

I dont like it. I've only seen a few episodes and I've found it to be boring. I dont like the feel of the show and hate the character designs. I dont like the writing and the show just doesnt appeal to me.

The show is whats its supposed to be. I remember in an interview with Matsuda?, that this is supposed to be an Extreme take on the characters and their designs reflect that. I mean come on, with the New Batman for Begins and now Supes, DC was going to milk it for all its worth.
IMO, if they were going to go with a more anime style with Bats, they should've went all the way. I picture something like Vampire Hunter D look for Batman mixed in with a little Big O!

But I like the series for what it is, the 60's Batman played straight.

i can't belive he really said that, compared to his creation of batman & bruce timms creation of batman, mastuda's batman show is the soft kid friendly one, not bruce timms. i think he needs to look at his views in a bigger light.

& im not surprised that this is the last season for him. by the way things have been going for him. im just curious is to how he will do a justice league show, since he wants to do one.

I have to say, the first season really deserves pretty much all of the criticisms it gets. As everyone's said, besides the fact it was successor to arguably one of the best animated series ever in BTAS, it simply just wasn't that good. The writing was simplistic and bland, and, more noticably, most of the character designs were just utterly horrible.

That said, I do think it's improved by leaps and bounds since then. It's not anywhere near as good as BTAS, obviously, but the plots seem a bit more complex and varied. And I think the addition of Batgirl and Robin has added a lot to the show as well.

My opinion of The BATMAN

Season 1 - crap

Season 2 - alright

season 3 - better [lose batgirl]

Season 4 - Badass [Robin rules]

One thing that's never made sense to me:

People b***h about Freeze using puns in TB, and yet watching Heart of Ice, I notice just as much cold puns, and no one says s**t.

Could someone explain this to me? :o

Anyway, from what I've seen of the show, the seasons follow somewhat akin to the quality of Star Trek movies--the even number movies are badass, the odd ones suck.

The best version of Freeze (both design and story wise) was the version from The New Batman Adventures. His design was very sleek and not so over-the-top, and he still had the same tragic story. While I like the new design of Freeze in The Batman, I'm not a big fan of the loss of the gun. He's Mr. Freeze, not Iceman.

I love the designs in the show simply for the fact that they are NOT the same from Batman TAS. I mean let someone else take a crack at it, and for god's sake let them do their own version and stop complaining because they don't conform to what's come before them. TAS was (past tense) a great series, but that series has ended and The Batman is what we currently have, and it's great in it's own right.

If you want to know if the show is good, watch it for yourself and jude it on it's own merit. Don't let other people decide for you.

As far as the changes in the designs of characters, let's not forget, BTAS did just as many changes from the comics as did The Batman. To criticise The Batman for the changes and not BTAS is somewhat hypocritical, IMO.
Again, I think the complaints are more that the show is not BTAS as much as anything else.

Mr. Freeze: Have an ice evening.

Have an ice evening? Have an ice evening? HAVE AN ICE EVENING?

Now let's compare that **** to the B:TAS Freeze (courtesy of TV.com):

Mr. Freeze: I'm beyond emotions. They've been frozen dead in me.

Mr. Freeze: The cold eyes of vengeance are upon you, Boyle.

Mr. Freeze: Sooner or later all who stand in my way must feel the icy touch of death!

Mr. Freeze: You beg? In my nightmares I see my Nora behind the glass begging to me with frozen eyes. How I've longed to see that look frozen on you!

Need I say more?

it's on kids wb. and it's not that it's "bad" it's just that many people have an emotional attachment to the dcau and are used to the more mature style of those shows as opposed to the kid freindly style of the batman

People talk crap about because they want the same BTAS all over again the same stories, same animation.....blah blah blah.....its a classic that shouldn't be ruined and just move on!!!!
This show is slated for a new audience....and the animation is this show is something like the Jackie adventure....the actions scene in the Batman blows away the any action scenes from the BTAS...but storywise is not clever at all.....but still entertaining...and not redundant..

Penguin: "Looks like I'm not the only one with a Lackey..*laughs*

Robin: "who's the Lackey now..."*beats the sh^t out of penguin*..LOL

This is a good cartoon, for a kids cartoon anyway. Sure beats the hell out of that crappy Teen Titans, Legion or FF cartoons. Those suck

Presumably they'll probably launch a new Justice League inspired cartoon. Matsuda has said that he, in his words "Felt the Justice League done by Timm is too soft."
I watch it and will continue to watch it.
Too soft? TOO SOFT? Having Nazis, routinely showing deaths (something TB would never dream of attempting), addressing fascism, having the JL take over the world, lobotomizing villains and blowing up and entire ****ing city with a nuclear weapon is soft?

I'd love to see the gritty, badassness that Matsuta's JL series would have, Hawaii 5-0 theme and all. :o

Damn, I liked Teen Titans, and I think the new F4 cartoon is kick ass. Legion isn't great, but it's good for what it is.

The Batman is a great show, and so far season 4 has been the best one yet and it's only 3 episodes in.
