Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

One of my biggest problems with the film was the characterization of Lex Luthor. I always preferred the brilliant corporate/science type, as oppose to the two bit, laughable thug with his cheesey henchmen. The casting of Spacey was fine [as was Gene Hackman's] it was the poorly conceived plot and characterization i had problems with. Lex should not be played for laughs he should be menacing and manipulative.

Btw, I thought the whole land grab plot line felt forced and incredibley unoriginal. I know Singer was going for nostalgia but he failed miserabley.

We Superman fans don't like our hero selfish, dumb, weak and stalking. Awful movie for a Superman fan. :hehe:

God I see that AvietwithJamon and most powerful are still here posting in every thread constantly defending the film. Don't you guys have lives? At least I go away on work and vacation. You guys are like permanent fixtures here who have to post in every thread. Do you guys have jobs? I mean Venom was here 24/7 because he had nothing better to do due to his condition. But I mean, is this the sum of your lives? To defend a mediocre film that just got it's butt handed again by the superhero films that came out this year. Hell, SR is even being called a failure in a few of the Dark Knight reviews from real film reviewers. I am serious. Is this all you guys do? I can't go into one thread on the SR, or it's sequel, boards here and not see you guys posting at least once a day in every thread. And you guys usually post more than once a day. I mean anyone says anything bad, and you are posting all day long. Anyone says good and you are posting all day long. I mean I go away for long periods of time. But, it just seems weird that you guys are so obsessed with defending this film day in and day out in EVERY thread. Seriously. I am genuinely curious. I mean this is all you guys seem to do. I am not trying to pick on you guys, but do you do anything else?

Just like you are in every thread bashing the movie, i have a job, and a life, and have just got back from my SECOND holiday of the year, with my THIRD less than a month away. If you actually went to other threads, you would see that i go in the majority of them, not just the SR one's. So when you come back, why dont you try that.

Wow, how do you really feel? I agree in some respect but it is still one of my favorite movies. I didnt think it was boring and the action scenes were amazing. In regards to a the villian, any Superman movie would have to start with Lex Luthor as a villian. If Luthor was substituted with Zod, Darseid or whoever else, fans would complain on this board. If they brought in another villian to try to fit him into the story along with Luthor it would have ended up like Spiderman III with too much going on.
I thought it was a great building block for hopefully another movie where ig Blue get to flex a little more.

I thought Incredible Hulk & Iron Man were good but I like Superman better.
Dark Knight was just simply genius. Probably one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I agree with everything here except the last sentence as i havent seen Dark Knight yet. TIH and IM were enjoyable, but neither were the level of movie that SR was IMO and time will prove that, already the enthusiasm surrounding both TIH and IM is starting to dwindle, and IMO it will continue to do so. TDK however, looks like it will forever be a classic.

Time will prove that superman returns was was a level above iron man? Iron Man was much more well recieved than SR and people still remember Christopher Reeve as Superman not Brandon Routh.

^I didnt say time will prove that SR is a level above Iron Man, i said time will prove that Iron Man just wasnt that good, i thought it was a really well made movie with some great performances, but best CB movie ever? NO CHANCE IMO.

Superan Returns is a good movie. it just doesn't thrill

Don't bother. buggs is banned for good after what he said about you & MP. He was way out of line with his comments there & he claim he didn't attack you 2 when he post on the "Singer's Superman Sucks" blog after he was banned. I know for sure he was lying, since he wouldn't be banned if he didn't attack like he claim. But whatever. Back on the topic..... :)

Are we talking about the better movie or the more well-received movie?

and people still remember Christopher Reeve as Superman not Brandon Routh.

Yeah, and people still remembers... holy, no actor has ever played Iron Man before. :hehe:

No. The best CB movie ever till now is called THE DARK KNIGHT.

Sorry, i was talking more about before TDK came out, people were saying Iron Man is the best CB movie ever, but i just never saw it, IMO the likes of Batman Begins, X2, Spiderman 2, SR, Hulk and a few others are well above it in the pecking order.

Thought he was only banned for 3 months?

Anyway, you know Bugg's, constantly pleading innocence despite the fact he is the biggest troublemaker in here.

I don't think his suit was that bad... but the movie wasn't all that great. There is MUCH worse in that movie, than his suit.

Here's my list of grievances against SR:

  • Too much Donner butt kissing
  • Superman was creepy. He was always spying on Lois Lane and creepy stuff like that.
  • Superman was a jerk for running off to Krypton without saying goodbye to anyone. They didn't even attempt to justify it either.
  • They didn't show that the world "had moved on" from Superman. Everyone cheers as soon as he shows up, and don't even care that he let all kinds of awful things happen while he was gone, like terrorism and hurricanes.
  • The kid pretty much trapped the story in the corner, since there's really not veyr many places you can take the franchise once Superman is a dad. If this were the last Superman movie, I could see him becoming a dad. But thanks to Singer, this actually could be the last Superman movie.
  • The "Richard" character is another black hole for the franchise. He is a good and honest man, is a loving father and fiancee to Jason and Lois. If Lois leaves Richard for Superman, then she's a ****e. If they kill off Richard to make room for Superman, then Superman is a grave robber. If they make it turn out that Richard is evil, then that's a copi out. It's just a big mess that never should have happened.
  • Spacey's Lex Luthor was lame. He was the same goofy moron he was in the Christopher Reeve movies, and the modern Lex Luthor is way more than that. There's a reason that the comic writers turned him into a ruthless billionare, but Bryan Singer didn't care since that would mean breaking continuity with the Donner films. When I found out Lex Luthor shagged an old granny to get her fortune, I shook my head and thought "the real Lex Luthor would never fall that low."
  • The movie was ugly. It had absolutely horrible color processing, and everything looked dull and muddy. It's like Metropolis never has a sunny day or something. It was just plain bad cinematography, and when a movie is filmed badly, it's a serious waste of all the effort that goes into making a film. The night shots were absolutely terrible, too.
  • The movie was frickin' boring. The plane catch scene was OK, but by the time it happened I was so out of the movie that I didn't even care. And the film's climax was really lame and didn't make a lick of sense. How did Superman lift a giant ball of Kryptonite out of the ocean and send it into space? That's some trippy silver age stuff going on.
  • They put Kumar in the movie, but didn't even give him dialogue. What's up with that?
  • Jimmy Olsen was totally gay.
  • They never explain why no-one suspects Clark and Superman are the same person, even though they both disappeared for 5 years and reappeared at the the exact same time. Are we supposed to believe Clark left a note saying "Me and Superman have realised our true feelings for each other, and we're off to Krypton to start our new life!" Geez, that's all kinds of messed up.
  • There was no Clark in the movie. He barely had any chance to shine, and his interactions with Lois were almost non-existant. Clark is as important to the story as Superman, and yet they completely ignored him.
  • Brandon Routh had almost no opportunity to act in the movie, so I don't even know if he was a good actor for the role or not. Singer basically used him as a living manaquin for the Superman suit since he looked like Reeve, and didn't even care if he could act or not since it didn't matter.
  • The costume sucked, no two ways around it. The \S/ was just plain too small, the coloring was horrible (just like with the rest of the movie), and the trunks were too short. Both those problems gave him a very elongated and slim looking torso, which made him look whimpier. And the \S/ should not have been on the belt.
  • Kate Bosworth was completely miscast as Lois Lane. In all fairness, she was given a very crappy script for her character, but that's still no excuse. She did not have any spunk at all. I couldn't even recognize her as Lois.

I could keep going, but I think I've vented enough for now. As you can probably tell by now, I have plenty of reasons to not like SR.

I've just recently watched the movie and it wasn't as horrible as some claimed, but it certainly was weak and generally very unappealing. It had few good moments but I'm not exactly sure who can enjoy this beyond kids who just don't know any better. What it lacks is a certain weight of life, substance beyond just pretty pictures and things everyone know Supes capable of doing.

I was extremely disapointed with Spacey because I like him so much as an actor, but I guess that there's only so much that one can do with an abysmal script and when your only guideline is to mirror a supervillain in an 70's movie. Bosworth? Just plain lame. Routh wasn't half bad since he reminded me of Reeves and I guess it's what the director wanted, but again, the script was bloody awful.

Not entirely awful experience but I don't think I want to see it again.

Heh.. what the hell?

If this isn't the biggest contradiction I've ever come across in a forum I don't know what is :D

Wow. I just love the stupidity of some calling those who like it as "kids". Who the hell tell you to speak for us & that we're kids for liking it or we don't know about films? The lack of maturity there. :whatever:

If your statement that only kids would like SR isnt the most idiotic statement I have read on these boards for a while I dont know what is. You dont like the movie, fine, but dont go judging the people who like you know what the **** you are talking about.

I know, the audacity of some of these people, I honestly thought we had moved beyond all of this.

Guess I'm just a big 38 year old kid then because I enjoyed the film. :whatever:

Do you still wear diapers or have you moved on to pull ups yet?

In YOUR opinion.

In MY opinion, SR is a beautiful, epic, enthralling, mythic, compelling, poetic and classic Superman film. Maybe you just couldn't get it? But is ok, not all of people have the same tastes when it comes to art, and SR is high art. And please leave the insults and condescending out of here, it only takes away from your credibility and quality as a poster.

Ooooh, but I almost forget.....this is the internet...

Well, yeah, if you're planning to drive nine hours non stop to kill your rival so you can be with a guy you bumped uglies with during a space flight.
