Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

A few days ago I watched Superman Returns with a pen and paper in hand and I ended up writing 8 pages what I didn't like about the film!

Every time I watch that movie it gets worse, it was on cable yesterday and I watched some of it to see if it was as bad as I thought and it was worse.

For the very same reasons that Bryan Singer was pushed out of the project and Brandon Routh and the entire cast and storyline cast out to the wind-It sucked.

yah...I can't even watch SR when it's on TV. Not even parts of it.

I'll watch parts of BB if I catch it. Even the Matrix movies......but not SR. I just have to think of the KID, and remind myself of deadbeat Supes.......

Sucks don't it. I think I am going to throw it in my dvd player, love the opening credits and john williams theme, then laugh mu butt off at the rest of it. I was going to use the dvd as a drink coaster, but I had my drinking glasses to be concerned of.

Whats not Superman about him, he overcomes great feats, he stops a plane he picks up an an entire island and launches it into space, F**kin awesome

Yeah, but there's a small problem. That's ALL he does. We know he can do more than lift heavy objects.

I agree with you buggs. I loved the opening theme, but I would always fall asleep afterwards.

Yeah, but there's a small problem. That's ALL he does. We know he can do more than lift heavy objects.

Its not ALL he does, he saves the lives of millions in the movie by performing these feats, and at the same time, he himself grows and learns to be a better person, he also finds his place amongst humanity through Jason, when he previously felt he had no place on Earth.

God forbid a movie tell a story through words and character rather than explosions.

I'm not saying the movie needed a million explosions to be great. I like a character driven movie, but the way this was handled was sloppy.

my problem is that it didn't capture the visual aspects of Superman... other problems were the story and lack of action, but for me, most importantly was the visual interpretation.

a dark Superman just does not work.

well, it wasn't an elseworlds story to me... and Singer certainly didn't say it was one. Had he of said that at the beginning, I would of gone into the movie with a different mind set.

Aren't all comic books (not 300 & Sin City thought) somewhat has that Elseworld theme to it? After all, the movies are it own stories & didn't copy everything from the comics. So I see comic book movies as Elseworld type of stories IMHO.

it's true that comic book-based movies are sort of what if / elseword stories. And, that is one way to look at them.

The big difference between a movie and a comic or graphic novel is that movies have a much bigger impact.....and have the potential to reach a much wider audience.

Indeed, with all the publicity, promotional tours, and red carpet premiers.....with all the fanfare surrounding a movie.........a movie is more like an EVENT. Especially an event that only happens once every so often.

Thus, when a movie does come out, it is likely to have more impact.....to be REMEMBERED more by a wider audience, than any what-if / elseword comic book or graphic novel.

by the same token, it's also much harder to "undo" or "forget" a movie. With a graphic novel or comic book, it's easy for it to become lost amongst the sea of every other comic book / graphic novel on a shelf. If a story doesn't work out there, you can always write another one or "retconn" it in a future story.

IOW.....it's easier for a less than popular comic book / graphic novel story to be just "swept under the rug" and forgotten........not so easy with a high-profile movie......

My problem with the movie wasn't that there wasn't enough action; my problem was that the film itself was poor story telling.

But both of your comments are opinions, of which there are many opposing one's at least on the web and probably around the world.

Of course they are, it is impossible to produce a movie about a long-lasting Superhero and do it exactly the same as the comic. With Superman being the oldest, it is even harder.

But many people liked SR S-B, just as many people disliked it, so just as many people DONT want to see SR sweaped under the rug.

Well, there are a lot of reasons, most of them have already been stated. The main thing is, i thought it was an absolutely awful idea, to kinda base the film on the first two Superman Movies, that already had their (crappy) sequels, instead of finally rebooting the Franchise. I mean, why have actors imitate interpretations of comic book characters from thirty years ago? Many people already think the Superman character is outdated and that concept certainly didn't do any good.

Besides that, you don't have to make Superman an illegitimate parent, that is only fighting, to get his former girlfriend back, to don't make a stupid action movie. It is very well possibly to combine action and deep storytelling, but Superman Returns didn't do either.

And don't let me forget about the horrible cast. While Brandon Routh, his weird diving-suit and his wooden Chris Reeve imitation to me had NOTHING from Superman, they did even wrose with my two favorite supporting characters of the whole DC-Universe. First there was Kate Bosworth, who couldn't possibly be wronger for Lois Lane and then they let Kevin freaking Spacey do a ridiculous and stereotype bad guy for Lex Luthor? I don't even want to start with his unbelievable stupid masterplan ... man, that was just too much for me.

And? Your point is what? Do you speak for the entire world? What if most of the world thinks the movie is awful? I'm sure there are many people that are deeply in love with this movie, but not everyone likes it. It's that simple.

Well, the thing is... it's love it or hate it with this movie. Of course, with every movie there are people who don't like it, but as i've said before, Superman Returns pretty much splits the whole Superman fanbase in half. And i just think that a movie which is intended to provide as basis for the whole Superman Movie Franchise in the next years (or even decades) should have at least SOME likeable aspects for the rank and file of fandom, not only part of it.

Agreed! This movie could have been so much better. Now we'll have to wait another 20 years for reboot.

I agree with this pretty much but i just dont think it was Brandon`s fault. He did his best and Singer is the only one to blame.
