I recently got done watching an episode of Estate of Panic...purely out of boredom as there was literally nothing else on. And it suddenly occurred to me....I really hate...no...Loathe so called "reality" tv.
The "host" was as fake as could be. And the editing was even worse. I've noticed that most reality shows seem to follow a certain routine that I’ll go into in just a bit. It's the reason I seem to enjoy Japanese game shows so much more. They are more real, more honest. It's about skill and not about drama...something we as Americans seem to be masters of.
Why I hate "reality" tv:
1) Fake Drama - Seriously...it seems every reality show nowadays has to have the "up close and personal" short interview during the action so we can hear how "terrified" they were...or how much they hated so and so....drama, drama, drama. I don't care what the producer made you say...because frankly, you are a bad actor/actress and can't pull it off. So PLEASE, stop with the drama sessions.
2) Edited to Hell and Back - Ever watched a reality show? No really. I mean REALLY watched one? Ever notice just how much they edit and splice the videos? It's almost like they film it and then put it through a meat grinder and then piece it back together however they want. Need a whiney contestant to look shocked or scared at an event? Simple...find a shot of one of them with their face in that appearance and edit it in right after the "unexpected" event.
3) Over-Competitive - Money....is that really the only thing we have worth competing over? IS that really how shallow we are in America? I don't think so...but producers don't care. It means less work for them if they don't have to script out what the people are going after...I mean, using skill? No way...that's crazy talk! Let's have them go into a fake environment that has no real danger or skill and let them grab a bunch of money in some manner or another. Oh...and while we're at it...let's throw in some more drama sessions about how they "want to beat that other contestant!!"
No thanks. I think I’ll stick to my Asian game shows...at least there they don't spend a half hour whining about who kissed who or who kicked who's butt. Instead, they have fun, challenge for the sake of it and use skills to the best of their advantage...call me crazy.
Feel free to vent or what not. But I believe reality tv is ruining TV...as long as it's around we will see less and less smart written tv shows.
(side note: I don't hate all reality shows. I really enjoy COPS on occasion and disaster/accident videos...but those are different...as they are real situations.)
