I wouldn't necessarily consider this to be the most depressing superhero/comic book movie that I've ever seen (like say, Batman Returns or Ang Lee's Hulk) but still, think about the following:
*Sandman's daughter is still seriously ill by the end of the movie

*Sandman is never properly brought to justice for his crimes. I don't care if Peter "forgave" him for killing Uncle Ben, Flint Marco still escaped from prison, knowingly as the Sandman attacked policemen, used his new found powers to rob banks (instead of using them "responsibility" like with Peter when he got bit by the radioactive spider), was an accomplice in the kidnapping of an innocent woman (Mary Jane), and God knows what else by the end of the movie, when he just floats away.

*Harry is dead. And all of this really wouldn't of happened if it weren't for "Deus Ex Machina" Butler telling in two movies too late the truth about his father's death.

*Even though she's seen at Harry's funeral, Peter never properly patches things up with Gwen Stacy after he (while under the influence of the symbiote) used him to get back at Mary Jane at the jazz club.

*Dr. Connors still as a sliver of the symbiote at his lab, so of course, there's a slight, slight chance of all of this *beep* happening again.

*J. Jonah Jameson's (who as shown in these movies, isn't really that bad of a guy) and for that matter, the Daily Bugle's reputation is more than likely tainted because of Eddie Brock's story fabrications. It didn't help that JJJ had to resort to paying off little kids for cameras.

*Peter and MJ's relationship after all of the drama that they've been through during just this movie, end up in a cloud of uncertainity (at the end, we just see them slow dancing and then the movie fades to black). I mean, since the series is going to be rebooted, we'll never get a chance to see Peter actually propose to MJ.

*Mary Jane's career and overall personal life is still in the crapper by the end of this movie.

*On a side note, the girl who played the British TV reporter, Lucy Gordon killed herself like a year or two after this movie was released. Not only that but Hal Fishman, who played the TV news anchor also died shortly after this movie was released. It also doesn't help much that this turned out to be Cliff Robertson's (Uncle Ben) final movie performance.

Man, if Spider-Man 3 is depressing, then I don't know what TDK is...

It's certainly disappointing. But I can see depressing too.

But I find the whole series to be fairly melancholy.

From the get go, Peter is an orphan. Pretty damn luckless in life. He starts out as an outcast with no friends. His Uncle is gunned down. His Aunt is old and poor (though at least they didn't make her ill). He has to struggle for everything.

His supporting characters aren't exactly helping things. Mary Jane is a self-absorbed ***** whose career falls apart (like you said). His best friend starts out okay, but it ends tragically.

All the villains are tragic characters (except Venom, who was a petty thug).

There really isn't much hope or happiness in these movies. I would not be surprised if this Spider-man would hang himself in the fourth movie (if there was one).

Jeez. Aunt May would die and MJ would turn to "hooking."

I seldom cry at movies, but this one made me cry. I don't consider it depressing though, because even though the ending makes me cry, I'm also happy because I enjoyed the movie so much. By the way, in the novel, it says that Peter patches things up with Gwen.

Why was Raimi so afraid to give Harry a Goblin costume?

I think that Raimi was afraid that it would be repeating himself, but I think changing Harry from the second Green Goblin significantly changes the subtext and meaning of the story.

Just a hood/cloak where shadow hides his face would of made him look more like a Goblin but he wouldn't have a mask on so he technically wouldn't be a Goblin either.

That doesn't make any sense. He would look like a Goblin but not look like a Goblin?

Yeah he would look like a Goblin, but because he has no mask, you could also say that he wasn't actually a Goblin.

I actually didn't have a problem with Harry Not becoming the second Green Goblin. New Goblin was cool, IMO.

The Green Goblin looked silly. Maybe it was the awkward poses, or the goofy mask. Or the hammy dialogue.

Green Goblin II, or calling him Hobgoblin would've been ten times better than creating a whole different villain.

Most of the problems you mention are either just bad writing or not part of the movie.

But I guess Raimi was thinking of a movie that explored different things than the previous ones. The dark side of the story.

Sandman's daughter is still seriously ill by the end of the movie because there's simply no evolutionj of that situation. Every time the movie refers to it it's a sad song and a sad Sandman watching that picture. That's about it. It's supposed to be sad merely because it's underlined that way.

Sandman is never properly brought to justice for his crimes is specially depressing becaus it's incredibly bad written. Peter's personal feelings shouldn't include to let a criminal escape. Sandman killed people other than Uncle Ben.

What to say about Bernard the Butler, the pinnacle of bad writing.

And yes, Raimi didn't bother in closing the Gwen Stacy chapter properly or what happened with Connors's piecve of symbiote.

By the third movie it was obvious that Jameson was taken only as a comic relief. And thus by the third movie the character was worn out, there wasn't more he could offer, and it shows. Much like the Peter and MJ's relationship, we should have seen the next step here and not more back and forth.

Now the actors who died... that's not part of the movie.

All in all, I think the only reason for me why Spider-man was so sepressing is that it followed such a great movie like SM2, just to disappoint.

I agree. Changing Harry to not wear a goblin costume kind-of misses the point of the story from the comics. Being the Green Goblin was the only way that Harry felt he could carry on his father's legacy and honor the memory of the sadistic madman who sired him.

Exactly. He obviously wanted to take his father's mantle as seen in the end of Spider-Man 2, and him becoming a flying ninja made no sense, even if you bring up the argument that he just wanted to kill Peter. Even if he just wanted to kill Peter, don't you think he would've wanted Peter's last sight to see the face of the Goblin once more? Green or orange, that's not really the point as Harry could have definitely taking liberties to change the look, but still keep it as a Goblin just for pleasure when Peter sees his biggest enemy "come back to life"

I agree. It seems like that decision of making New Goblin instead kinda got Raimi fired from SM4.Because he wanted to create another new villain,Vultress.

*knows the floodgates will now be opened and fanboys will scream out that is was Sony's choice and not Raimi's*
