I believe there are several reasons that this movie needs to succeed for the sake of all comic book movies that will be coming out in the future.

1) So that studio's like FOX will realise that taking your time with a comic book movie and giving it a good run time will not effect your box office takings. (I dont mean to start another X3-SR war here, so please dont start one in this thread, but i think the point has huge relevance).

2) Mainly, so that all studio's wont lose faith in comic book movies that tell a story and have lots of character development, and therefore longer run-time's. Most comic book movies that come out need a run-time of over two hours AT LEAST IMO. All of the better comic book movies have run-time's of over two hours and it shows. But if this movie doesnt make enough money, the future of comic book movies may suffer, and we may get more Elektra's, X3's or FF's instead of SR's, BB's, or V For Vendetta's.

Now i havent seen SR yet, but i have been assured by very reliable people that i WILL like it, so i can see me going to see this a couple of times when it comes out here on the 14th.

If I were to say "Of course. This movie is the reason other comicbook movies will be made so it must succeed no matter how bad it is because somehow other comicbook movis depend on it." Everyone would be ok with that, except for th "no matter how bad it is part." That's against some unwritten law to say.

If I were to say, "This is not much more important than any other movie, and if it doesn't please the PAYING audience as was intended, it does not deserve to succeed..." I'll have a thousands of guns pointed at me for even thinking that, I'm sure.

Call me old fashioned, but I believe a filmmaker should earn their rewards instead of being given a handicap by nervous fans. But think not of the second response. The first one is more agreeable so have that one if you will.

The survival of Spidey does not depend on the success of this movie.

not only that but SPIDERMAN more than any other movie proves the validity, and the vialbility of superhero movies. SM has made close to $1.5 BILLION dollars with 2 moives. If Hollywood doesn't get that there is an appeal for superheroes NOTHING will change their mind.
furthermore, SM has been the most faithfull of ALL the superhero movies to come out recently and and both movies were good movies, with solid acting and directing.
That should be the formula that Hollywood needs to follow; faithful, good directing. good writing, good acting.
Superman did not meet these criterias. It was kind of faithfull but took SERIOUS liberties by creating something that NEVER existed before; SM's baby. It also changed the relationship dynamics DRAMATICALLY.
I thought the writing was poor, and pre crisis silly. (lex's plot)
The acting was fine.
The reason why supporting ANY superhero movie good or bad, faithfull or not, is a BAD idea, is because it allows Hollywood to do whatever they want with these characters.
IMO Superman is NOT deserving of success. This is coming from someone who honestly wanted the movie to be good and successful.
just IMO.

Excellent response mine would have been along the lines of WTF no the success of this movie will only effect WB DC movies and even thats debatable considering would they stop the Batman sequel because this movie does not do well?? I do not see that happening.

No, i meant for all future comic book movies starting afresh, like new franchises.

this movie doesnt have to be box office money huge... BATMAN BEGINS PROVED THAT.... and everyone can keep stroking spidey cuz the movies made so much money but remember who he stole from also there almost getting too campy so kids can see them....

me personally will take a DARKER more adult superhero movie then to have a bunch of snot nosed whiney kids running around in my theatre... i say slap on a R rating... forget the PG14 crap even thats getting old with al the teeny boppers going to movies and blurting stuff out to look cool

SPIN SPIN SPIN!!!

HAHAHAHAH i find it so funny when someones comic book isn't making money they come with excuses like spider-man being campy and stuff like that.

oh well......

As of now SR is a FLOP we will see how much can it do when POTC 2 come out.

Maybe the public is sending a message here. Maybe they're sick of seeing remakes and retreads of movies that did it better in the original. Those Superman trailers used to market the film screamed REMAKE with the choice of clips, the Williams theme, and the Brando voice-overs. After Poseidon, The Omen and now Superman I wouldn't be surprised if it's starting to get old with the audience out there.

laugh all you want but i suggest go and see the movie again and look around and see how MANY KIDS ARE THERE... everytime i ve gone there was less and less kids and more and more adults....

POTC2 does not scare me... Depp is a crappy actor and onyl reason people will see this movie is cuz little girls obcess with him... otherwise hes a half ass actor and try to deny me that .... im sorry but edward scrissor hands and Willy wonka dont do it for me.... bout the only good film hes ever made was Benny and Jun

BTW DVD sales will be the future of Box office bank making.... i bet you with in the next 3 years!!!!!

In agree with some of your comments Lightning, but Depp is NOT average, he's a frigging great actor.

Every comic film that does good helps the genre and allows it to continue. However, it really doesn't effect comic films that have already been established (like Batman, Spidey, X-men, and now Superman). If they are already bankable, they will continue to be unless the director/writers screw them up. What's most effected are the comic movies that aren't in production yet. If more of them come out and don't make money, studios will start thinking twice on making new ones.

Wow...let it go. Superman was the first comic book superhero. At one point or another every comic book hero is going to do something that he already did. Move on already. And please don't bring up the plot of SM2 being stolen from Superman2....we all know that the "Spider-man No More" comic storyline was written years (10, 20?) before Superman 2.

So, we should change the character of Spidey to make him darker to fit your needs?? Spider-man is a lighter character than Batman...even in the comics. He's brighter, funnier, and has a higher moral code than Batman (i.e. pulls his punches, doesn't kill, not nearly as brutal, etc.). Sure he has his dark periods...but for the most part, you know what I am saying. I can only assume you never liked Spidey to begin with.

As for the snot nosed kids and teeny boppers...I got news for you, it doesn't stop with an R rating. There are still plenty of morons yelling out stupid stuff in R rated movies, and yes...I still see little kids and hear crying babies. So much, that I rarely go to the theaters anymore. DVDs at home are much more enjoyable. If it bothers you that much, just stay home, Champ.

This comment just made me laugh out loud. I hope you're not implying that Superman Returns was somehow Oscar-worthy.

I don't see why exactly that's a GOOD thing. Why are there less kids...I can tell you why my nephew didn't want to see it again...he said it was boring. You don't want kids to get "bored" with a superhero.

I'm not a little girl obsessed with him and I'm planning to see the movie. I enjoyed the first one. It wasn't the best movie ever made, but it was fun and entertaining....what a movie should be. And I can easily "deny" your claim that he is a half ass actor. Know why?? Cause that's an opinion...not fact.

You bet, Chief. And uh...didn't you just waste your time responding to me anyways??

Even that deserves a laugh because I haven't seen one comic movie (or a performance in a comic movie) that's deserving of being nominated for an Academy award. The closest I've seen is when Ang Lee tried his best to make The Hulk pretentious oscar-bait and failed miserably.

as far as kids go... well i thinks thers too much attention given to them... and i think its time that the TRUE COMIC Generation readers GET WHAT THEY WANT FOR A CHAANGE...

as far as POTC if you enjoyed it well good... i thouht it was ok... but nothing more then ok at best.... POTC will sink in a movie story related way the only reason peopl will see this AGAIN is cuz of BLOOM AND DePP

wait, are you saying true comic book generation readers wanted a film that excluded children from watching?

as an uncle to three young comic fans I have to disagree.

I guess I just don't understand why an R rating = better comic movie. Maybe for Batman, Spawn, Punisher, I agree 100%. But not for Spidey, Fantastic Four, Superman, Captain America, etc. As long as the movie is done right then I don't see why it can't be adult and kid friendly. The comics are...why not the movies too? If your sole purpose for changing that is cause the kids and teeny boppers annoy you in the theater...well, then that's the wrong reason. Go to an earlier showing or suck it up and watch it on DVD. Sure, it sucks that you have to resort to that....but it'll never change unless they put ushers back in the theater aisles.

We had an R rated Spidey script from Cameron. Spidey Cussing, having sex with MJ, all kinds of unnecessary crap. It would have sucked hard. Adult/R rating does NOT equal better/good.

You're probably right here....unless it genuinely is a good movie. People are going into this movie looking for your typical Summer movie....funny, action packed, and just plain entertaining. As long as it delivers...people will watch it. Doesn't mean it's oscar worthy or better than Supes....it just delivered what it promised.

My point exactly.
