I was just thinking.

While I liked SR, it certainly wasn't your typical comic book/superhero movie.

And as we've seen at these boards, some fanboys hated it.

But after talking to some friends, the general consensus was that girls/women LOVED it.

Mainly because of its romantic aspects and so on.

Titanic didn't open to huge numbers but it had legs, mostly fueled by 13 year old girls and women who kept on seeing the movie again and again.

I'm not saying SR will get even close to the final Titanic numbers (that's not realistic), however, does anyone think that its repeat business will mostly come from the female crowd? (aside from die-hard Superman fans).

yea, i agree with what you're saying. i saw the movie with my gf and she loved it, maybe even more than i did. she went in not knowing anything about the character outside of commercials and stuff, and she walked away wanting to see it again. maybe nexxt weekend.

I think so. I think Brian Singer said it was his most romantic movie to make. I hope it's not just the female crowd but also the casual movie-goers as well. Yes, I agree it's not the typical super-hero movie. I hope it does well in the box-office.

I didn't find the romance in SR that engaging. I'm also not a teenage girl. It could have repeat viewings by young girls, but Titanic was also massive with the older women. It hit the 13-65 demographic :) because it pretty much had all the elements, and Leo Dicaprio and Billy Zane.

edit:

If anything...you will probably see the growth of the "Brakate" ship....I can see SR developing a fandom like Clana has on SV. That relationship is also very annoying, but Welling and Kruek look good on screen together. KB and BR look good on screen together too.

Yea to have a romantic film, there actually needs to be an engaging romance. Its truly sad to say this, but Superman is dead come POTC2.

I wouldnt know my gf hated it :(

I think that Superman Retuns may have some repeat viewers in women. Is that why S:TM made it so big? Is that why Smallville and Lois and Clark did so well?

I think it stands a good chance to get solid repeat viewing from the female demo. Any successful film nowadays needs the female viewing audience -- in large part because they make up an overwhelming majority of the movie revenue base. In fact, early indicators that SR wasn't going doing that well were based on weekend numbers showing males continuued to outnumber females which you would expect for Superman, but for most films, it's a bad sign. MI3 anyone? That's why experts knew Cruise's movie was flopping.

A lot of my gf's went to a private AOL screening and they loved it -- they were all swooning over Brandon Routh, and couldn't wait to see more of him.

I can't speak for SV because that romance is also screwy, and Al and Miles admit to dragging it out for five seasons. They add angst with their sugar and cream daily. Plus, that's a teen show and teen shows are angsty.

LnC is properly exectued Supes/Lois romance. It had a massive draw. I'm a die hard shipper of this couple and this romance did not engage me. I can't speak for everyone, but I doubt this movie will get repeat female viewers. It's like some crazy Nicholas Sparks romance about Superman...lol...without Nicholas Sparks to help Singer out. Anyone who sees The Notebook in this film is only seeing it because Mardsen is there.

I found the relationship between Lois and Richard to be more interesting in SR than Lois & Superman, because the former has a more realistic development, whereas with Lois and Superman, the Supe is seen more as a stalker who can't get over his feelings for her. I'm not a female, but I don't think SR has enough romantic angles to lure the female demographics to see it over and over a la Titanic.

Come this weekend, we will see if Superman Returns has legs.

So come back here on Sunday. By then, we'll see how much of a drop to expect. Small drop = chance of having a lot of staying power. Big drop (over 50%) means that SR is screwed.

LOL...if Richard was the hero of the movie than I think females might be digging. Unfortunately, the hero got shafted by the filler character. That's not good romance...turn your own Alpha into a wimp looking character :)

I hope it has legs, but I don't think it's going to on this point.

My opinion...

Here Here, Richard was the man in Superman Returns. It was like, they placed Richard in the movie as a homage to the real Superman.

You never know, with Superman acting all stalker-esque and emo throughout the film, Richard could have been Singer's way of giving us a normal Superman. If so, put the damn S on James Marsden, he won me over.

No.

Too much of an action movie, the love story while making the characters endearing, is not a trashy soap opera (Titanic/The Notebook).

And girls will be obsessed with Johnny Depp starting Friday.

Hopefully it will have better legs than the attrotious and disgraceful X3 though.

Not a chance, SR is not bad, but not good enough either.

I saw it a second time last night, and will be seeing it a third time this weekend.

I'll be watching in IMAX this weekend and then perhaps one more time after that. I watched Begins 3 total in the theater as well.

STM had every demographic seeing it multiple times. Hell it didnt even get to my 2nd run cinema till 6 months later.

I think this film will definitely have lasting power (similar to Batman Begins)... not as much as Titanic, but much more than most. It's not going to be an X2 or X3 where it makes a majority of its money the first week and then vanishes.
