Comedy Wile E. Coyote vs. ACME

Yup, there is literally nothing Gunn could or should say except stay silent.

If he had integrity, he would say something.

But sure, he co-runs a production company that is totally and completely safe from the whims of the man who is Gunn's boss. And would never, ever interfere with Gunn. He promises.

You know what, this tweet made something click with me.

Tom and Jerry (2021)

I’m wondering if that bomb simply scared the s*** out of Zaslav, positive test screenings or not. Not justifying the decision by any means but Tom and Jerry’s reception two years ago had to have had something to do with this. Especially if theyre similar movies.

So apparently someone on Twitter found out that there's a privated link on Vimeo to this movie's trailer and that's where that Roadrunner screenshot originated from. You can find it on Twitter if you know where to look.

Not gonna lie, I'm manifesting for that trailer to be leaked. Would be more than Batgirl ever got at least.

Was Tom and Jerry that big of a disaster, though? Given its release date, I don't feel like the results were that bad. If anything, Space Jam 2 is probably the bigger concern.

That said, context is probably lost on folks like Zaslav, and he generally just seems to have a strong disdain for animation overall.

I do wonder if its another TMC situation, where some big names through some weight around.

Wait, where is that equation coming from? The high-end of internet budget math I've seen is a x2.5 return, which would come out to around $175 million?
Some folks say that distribution and advertising can double the overall cost (beyond production). Thus, 2 x $70M = $140M. Therefore, this movie would need to gross approx. $280M in order to net $140M (break even). So I was giving WB maximum benefit of doubt in order to rationalize their decision to cancel. But I suspect your figure is closer to reality. Moreover (as mentioned) the BO isn’t the only source of revenue. Which means it would be even easier for WB to break even (or perhaps profit?) — compared to the guaranteed loss that comes with a write-down scenario.

Additionally, the “reputational damage” WB is accruing (among moviegoers, among actors and filmmakers) for pulling the plug on completed or near-completed projects can’t be good for its bottom line either.

So, bullying a Company works? Who would have thought that.
I dont think they expected this much backlash over this.

Stock being in free fall and all that, perfect storm it seems.
The best result would be that someone gets the movie, and it makes absolute profit...that would be a fantastic middle finger to WB.
Probably still no wakeup call, but a nice slap in Zaslavs face.

You're expecting Gunn, who is a full-time, year round employee to trash talk a decision made by his boss? To the public?

It’s less that people expect him to and more that clearly in an ideal world as an extremely rich, successful and powerful person he would. I don’t blame Gunn, I’d probably be quiet too (and maybe he pushed behind the scenes - we don’t know), but it’s not like he’s living paycheck to paycheck. He could never work with WB again and still be a hugely successful director elsewhere. The power disparity is pretty irrelevant when both parties are wealthy and have nothing to lose other than a job they don’t need to survive.

Someone somewhere did the math. Licensing or selling it won’t help as much as the tax write-off.

If I were Gunn, I’d be pissed. This also means Zaslav will shelve any movie he doesn’t think will be profitable. How do you build a cinematic universe around that I don’t know.
This tax write-down strategy for creative works has to go. It's not like he's writing down a piece of machinery or a vehicle. How do future creatives have any faith in working for this current WBD? This is a business where there is artistic endeavour behind top quality products. Just getting financially paid out doesn’t compensate for your work being lost.

That's at least something.
I’m not saying that Puck is wrong about this story. Indeed, after a quick search, I did find a Forbes article that apparently corroborated the news. Though… Forbes cited The Wrap as their source. And The Wrap, in turn, cites Puck. :ebr: To my knowledge, the major trades haven’t reported on this yet.

This is amazing news, altbough we should sef wait to hear this from Variety, Deadline etc before getting too excited.

It didn't do great but it did make $136 million worldwide off of a day-and-date release. $46 million domestic. Not sure what the actual budget was, but based on what I read, anywhere from $50 million to $80 million, so comparable to Acme vs. Coyote.

Space Jam: A New Legacy made $163 million worldwide and $70 million domestic.

Meanwhile, DC League of Super Pets only made about $93 million domestic and $207 million worldwide. Probably cost well over $100 million when you figure in P&A costs.

I in no way am defending WB's decision there, but these past results probably gave them cold feet and thought it would be better to toss Acme vs. Coyote in the trash. This was probably their logic. It's not a logic I agree with but this is probably what they are thinking.

Get something back in the short-term without worrying about it in the future.
