For example, Soundwave in robot form is like 50 feet tall but in boombox form, he's the size of a normal boombox. Does anybody know? If they do that in the movie, it's going to loose it's realism. Of course, in the cartoon the animators can cheat. But please don't do this in the movie version!

It's not cheating any more than using lightsabers in Star Wars is cheating. It's just advanced technology.

That said, Soundwave's appearance is extremely unlikely so I wouldn't expect mass shifting of any sort. Not unless they make a sequel and Soundwave keeps his original form.

I am sure they will be somewhat larger once transformed into robots. However, I do not think we will notice a HUGE difference like we do in the example you gave. Since Soundwave, if in the movie, will not be a boombox, but something a bit more relevant to the time we are in now.

I'm pretty sure Michael Bay has officially said that the Transformers will not be making size alterations.

So no gun Megatron, but honestly it always seemd lame to me in the first place.

I always thought it was cool. Could be fodder for some interesting storylines. And it could have been "explained" in one simple line after one of them is captured and studied by the military....

"Some of them seem to have the ability to shift part of their mass into a dimensional pocket. Indeed, they could be anywhere and anything."

Alas, this is a Bay movie, not X-Files or Star Trek or <insert thought-provoking sci-fi here>.... or even Terminator. If Terminator could get away with the fairly unintelligible "only organic stuff can pass through the time warp" thing, surely Transformers can get away with mass-shifting.

Bay doesn't give his audience enough credit.

Perhaps you dont give Bay enough credit.

I thought that they figured out a way to do SOME size shifting...

i think this is one of the many reasons they decided to not make Megatron a gun...haha. whoever came up with that idea in the first place sucked...

...let's make Megatron, who goes up against Prime (a big rig), a little gun!!! surely he'd be able to defeat Prime since he's a gun! lol...

They did but it was dropped from an earlier draft alongside the likes of Arcee. Although the fact that they wrote it in at all suggests they took it seriously to some degree.

Maybe they'll wait to see reaction to the first movie before gauging what the audience will and won't accept, but seeing as minions seem to be a dime a dozen in the movieverse the only unique ability Soundwave has left is mass shifting so I hope they keep it (mobility is achieved through his minions).

What's kinda funny is...originally Shockwave was Megatron. Shockwave's toy was going to be released as Megatron originally, but then they decided to change it around. So Megatron would have been a GIANT GUN.

Any mp3 player.
And the minions could be SD memory cards.

It could be made to work....with some cool special effects.
This is sci-fi. It's about pushing the boundaries of the imagination.

Soundwave a PSP Shooting out the damned discs. RAVAGE, LAZERBEAK, DISCJOCKEY, EJECT!

Soundwave can still be a boombox, They still make boomboxes today, They have CD players built right in them anyways.

I think i remember that an article stated that micheal bay is not going ot make any size alterations.

I doubt he would've boxed himself in like that, not with the script being a work in progress. He usually keeps things close to his chest.

One of the writers, on the other hand, said mass shifting was out. Citing a "logic hole" as a reason but they probably had other issues. Hopefully they'll be a bit more adventurous in a sequel (for the time being I understand they have to play it safe to some degree).
