Terrence Howard to Play Nelson Mandela

Terrence Howard (Iron Man) will play Nelson Mandela in the Jennifer Hudson-starrer Winnie, based on the story of Winnie Mandela, Nelson Mandela's former wife.

Darrell Roodt is directing the $15 million historical drama, a South Africa-Canada co-production set to start production May 31 in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for 18 of his 27 years in prison.

While Nelson Mandela is a universally sympathetic figure for his struggle against apartheid, his former wife is a far more complicated figure. She has been depicted as the mother and wife who was a steadfast supporter of her activist husband and who was jailed herself for campaigning for his release and fighting against apartheid. Her image was subsequently tarnished by association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer, and she was later convicted of fraud.

I haven't liked Terrence Howard in anything I've seen him in, especially Crash and Iron Man. I don't think he's a very good actor, I believe Nelson mandela deserves someone better to portray him in a biopic.

The only thing Terrence Howard was good in IMO was " Dead Presidents " and " Hustle & Flow "

I saw this film at TIFF in 2011. Absolutely dreadful. Hudson was good in the role, but the film had a formulaic, Oscar-bait tone to it. Howard was nothing special in it either. OVERLY-ROMANTICISED BULL. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone....

That's sad to hear. That and it's been done since 2011 and barely getting a release.

Invictus wasn't bad. Freeman is the only actor that seriously resembles him though.

After Earth's Sophie Okonedo was good as a young Winnie in the BBC TV movie of Mrs Mandela back in 2010. Homeland's David Harewood was a good Mandela in it as well.
