This question comes to mind based ona recent stabbing in the UK.

If you saw a robber and they were unarmed/armed with knives guns etc, if you thought you could take them and they wouldn't get away with your stuff, would you?

Does your response depend on whether they are armed or not, or exactly what they are armed with?

Does it also depend on what they are asking for? Are you more inclined to let people get away with cash, than your mobile phone, car etc...

If you are confronted while with a child, partner, are you more or less likely to confide with their wishes?

I'll place a poll up pretty soon but i want to gauge what type or responses i get first so the options are relatively useful.

I think it depends if I thought he or she would be a danger to my family. I have a baton, butterfly, sais (dull though), and a katana kinda within reach of my bed.

I know kung-fu.

That's some kinky **** you've got going.

Handcuffs and blindfolds are so passé.

I'm a traditionalist, just flowers and car batteries attached to nipples.

This sounds like one of GAH's threads, where he hopes to impress women with his kung fu skills.

meh, you'd all either crap your pants or man up if they came for your comics...

It depends on the situation, whether they'd hurt anyone, and whether they were going to. For me, isn't worth hurting someone to prevent them from taking something in most cases. It is worth risking harm to protect someone, though.

If I thought I could be helpful I'd do it in a second. I actually have a disliking for people that can just stand and watch someone get hurt based on a nasty personal experience.

I'd take a shot at it lol. I mean, if they didnt have a weapon it would be on! But when we're talking guns i'll comply. GUess it would depend on if theres someone with me needing protection

I got jumped once... they didn't take anything just beat the **** out of me. I wondered home and then had to go to the hospital for stitches above my left eye...

If it's my house they're breaking into while I am at home, they're getting shot. Two in the chest and one in the head or a couple rounds of shotgun pellets in the belly, depending on which gun I grab first. If it's in public, I think you have to gauge each situation on it's own and evaluate whether trying to subdue a robber or mugger is going to worsen the situation or diffuse it. Sometimes it's better to just give them what they want and let them get out of there so no one gets hurt and other times it's probably better for everyone to take the assailant out if the opportunity arises.

are you allowed to shoot to kill if threated with a weapon in the states? I'm not familiar with the gun laws but i would presume reasonable force would still be implied.

If someone has broken into your home, yes, you can shoot and kill them in most states (every state has varying laws about this but the majority of them allow for it as a case of self-defense). Most shooting instructors will tell you to keep the shot ratio at 3-4 entry points into a target in these instances. It shows that you were simply trying to stop the target and diffuse the situation if you wind up in court. If you empty a clip in a burglar, it shows excessive use of force and malicious intent that could work against you in court. I've spent time in concealed weapons classes and, at least the ones in my state, tend to teach the standard military killshot approach of two in the chest and one in the head with plenty of target practice to ingrain it into a shooter. If someone breaks into my home, it will be a very natural thing to do for me because I've done it on the range. And I won't feel bad about it. Anyone who breaks into my house has no good intentions for me or my family and they deserve to die. I only hope that I catch them on the hardwood floors as those will be SOOOOO much easier to clean than the carpets.

Damn, whole heap of stereotypes there :(

I make the girl walk around with 2 razor sharp chopsticks in her hair just in case too.

would anyone tackle a man with a knife if they were confronted on the street.

straight up one on one and you thought you could take them but werent sure of the risk?

I've always considered knives to be less of a threat than guns but i'm not so sure anymore. I would have always have been inclined to defend myself against a dude with a knife in the past

Fair enough. I always thought you were allowed to shoot to defend yourself but not necessarily to kill.

Would you always go for the kill even if the one shot was enough? I'm not sure i would be that way inclined but i guess if you are programmed to naturally go for it, i doubt you'd be really thinking about it either.

If he's dead after I shoot him, he can't sue me. It's as simple as that. And, yes, people have broken into people's homes with the intent of robbery or bodily harm to it's owners and gotten shot for their troubles but lived, only to turn around and successfully sue the people who shot them for breaking into their home with the intent of robbing or hurting them. If someone breaks into your house, shoot them dead.

My older brother was in this situation.

If you want to imagine my brother, imagine the opposite of me. He's good at sports, he's tough and bulky, he talks tough and manly, he doesn't like comic books or sci fi, and has been mocking my nerdy habits for years.

So he was on his way home late one night and a guy attacked him with a knife. My brother in an attempt to not get stabbed, tried grabbing for the knife. He ended up having his fingers sliced in a nasty way. Luckily that was the worst he got. If he hadn't tried grabbing for the knife it could have been worse. I'm sure there are self defence classes that teach more effective methods of dealing with that scenario though.

If I were in a public place and someone was robbing a store, they were going to take some money and leave, then I wouldn't do a damn thing.
Putting my life at risk for some money from a store is not worth it.
If the robber was beating someone to death and I knew I could stop that person, then in the heat of the moment I guess I would.

If someone was breaking into my house, then that's a different story. I'm very protective of my home. I feel if someone tries to break in, it's the biggest offense to me. Your house is the one place you should feel safe, it's a place of privacy. I have weapons under my bed, so it's a matter of catching the person by surprise and taking them down.

My friend got jumped for his McDonalds once. He was on the train and this guy demanded he hand over his food. He said no and the guy started hitting him and trying to take it from him. He held though and jumped off at the next stop.

I laughed when he told me. What kind off person trys to steal a McDonalds meal?
