Joseph Smith had a similar thing when his wife stole his "original version" of the book of Mormon. So he then included a preface in the dictated version which said "that the devil had caused the translation to be stolen and altered from what Smith had 'translated'", essentially saying if Smith were to produce a new translation word-for-word identical with the first, it nevertheless would appear to differ from the stolen pages because of the changes which had been made in the latter by the cunning of the devil.

Meier has made "predictions" regarding World War 3, saying that it would happen in 2006, then 2008, or 2010, or even 2011, but the prophecies are "subject to change" instead of being "set-in-stone".

Essentially, it's cover your ass in case you're wrong.
