X-Factor(USA)

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sho...factor-recap -the-top-10-fail-to-rock-us.html

This week was a classic case of what's been wrong with Simon Cowell's baby. The Rock Week theme wasn't taken seriously, as Amy Reiter notes, the judges kept on sniping at each other, the contestants were predictable and repetitive and the show is stuck on an "unrelentingly unvarying pace." Plus, she adds, Steve Jones is dragging down "X Factor's" energy and sense of fun. "It's not just his accent that's a distraction," she explains, "but also his stiff manner and the way he abruptly and frequently interrupts the judges to keep the show on track timewise –- like some kind of smarmy schoolmarm."

His accent isn't a distraction at all and he'll be getting shouted at down his earpiece to interrupt the judges.

I'm hoping they replace Steve Jones next year... He truly is as stiff as a plank. Cold towards the contestants, abrasive towards the judges and as boring as a plank of wood.

Make me truly appreciate how good Dermot O'Leary is on the UK version of the show.

Last night’s The X Factor show concluded with all sorts of unexpected, juicy, normally seen-on-Bravo drama. It started with Astro prefacing his survival performance with these words: “I really don’t want to perform. I feel like it’s unnecessary.” And then moments later, the 15-year-old rapper told America, “I feel like if you’re going to put me in the bottom two, I don’t want to perform for people who don’t want me here.” This comment effectively turned the entire Xanadome against the kid. But I want to begin this on-the-scene recap several minutes before that and tell you how everything you didn’t see on TV went down.

Let’s back up to when there were four acts remaining onstage: Astro, Stacy Francis, Drew, and Rachel Crow. During the break, the audience started chanting Rachel’s name — it was abundantly clear who was the Xanadome’s favorite. Astro and Rachel walked toward the crowd to high-five and hug a few fans, and then my eyes drifted toward Stacy, who was standing perfectly still while holding the hand of her mentor Nicole Scherzinger. As if turned to stone by Medusa, the 42-year-old single mother didn’t budge, nor did she talk to Nicole. Stacy was clearly devastated by being in the bottom four, and as she compared herself to the other three remaining singers, she likely comprehended what the night’s outcome was going to be.

Still, Stacy, you got to try to appear, well, alive. Look at Drew over there, having a friendly conversation with Simon. Look at Rachel, smiling and running around like a kid hunting for Easter eggs. Maybe Stacy was simply depressed about the fact that she was the exact age of the three remaining contestants combined (13 + 14 + 15 = 42). Regardless, things weren’t about to get any easier for the singer.

Back from the break, Steve Jones announced that Drew was safe, which resulted in the crowd chanting Rachel’s name once again. As Drew walked off the stage, she passed by Stacy. Again, no expression or movement on Stacy’s part. That would have never happened on American Idol. On Idol, no matter what, someone was going to hug you after you got saved. But Idol seemed to foster a group “we’re in this together” mentality. The least popular singers would hang out together on those silver stools and stand together when it was time to be eliminated. The X Factor, by comparison, prefers to keep the acts separate from one another as they await their fate.

With the Rachel chanting continuing, Steve finally revealed that the 13-year-old girl was also in the top nine, meaning that we were left with Astro and Stacy. Astro shook L.A. Reid’s hand and then turned toward the audience and gave a little shrug. During the break, Simon grabbed the mic from Bill the Warmup Host and boastfully announced to the audience: “My three girls made it through!”

Then it was time for Stacy to sing her survival song, “Amazing Grace.” Nicole nodded her head as Stacy belted out some of the bigger notes, while Simon slouched back in his chair. And then Astro rapped his version of “Never Can Say Goodbye.” L.A. Reid rocked his head and pumped his arm in the air, but none of the judges stood for Astro at the conclusion of his number. During the subsequent break, Astro retreated to the staircase at the back of the stage, where he silently sat like a scolded child. Stacy remained center stage as tears started to roll down her face. A stagehand quickly arrived with some tissues for the singer, while Steve consoled Stacy by placing his arms around her arms and ultimately giving her a little kiss on the cheek. For the rest of the break, Astro and Stacy never spoke a word to one another.

Before the break ended, the crowd started shouting both Astro and Stacy’s names, but the chants for Astro definitely sounded louder. That would all change in a few minutes. Back on the air, L.A. Reid proceeded to question Astro’s attitude and yet opted to send Stacy home. The crowd booed. A little bit later, Paula also chose to pick Stacy for elimination. The boos got louder. And then during Simon’s critique, Astro delivered his now infamous line about not wanting to perform “for people who don’t want me here.” The Xanadome was furious! Now, instead of yelling both Astro and Stacy’s names, the audience was fully committed to rooting for Stacy. Persuade Simon, we could not, as he opted to send Stacy packing anyway.

During Stacy’s farewell video, Simon walked onstage and then gestured for L.A. Reid to join him. Two stagehands rushed over to Paula and Nicole and persuaded the two judges to also trek the 20 feet toward the stage. As soon as the show ended, the top nine acts emerged, with Rachel being the first to hug Stacy. Wait, did I say the top nine? I meant eight of the top nine acts appeared, as Astro was nowhere to be found. I guess he felt like it was unnecessary.

No big surprise of the two acts that went home

I think Stacys past about being a z lister in hollywood already is what lead to her downfall with the audience.

That was a tough one to watch last night...

Man the last two elimination episodes have been tough to watch and I'm surprised Marcus still in it...not that I think Rachel is better than Marcus, the fact that he's been in the bottom 2 last 3 weeks and still here...

As much as I want to be shocked and get all dramatic about this (Boooo Nicole)... I've watched 8 series of the UK X Factor and the manipulation is through the roof.

I believe very little happens without Simon's say-so. This dramatic exit is a ratings ploy for a luke-warm US series. We always have that ''shock exit'' on the UK show.

He gets drama, media interest, subsequent ratings... AND gets to sign Rachel Crow to make some money.

It's win-win for him.

I wonder if The X Factor:USA will release the Voting results in the end of the season like The UK does...

Anyway it was a shock, but the american voters are the only ones to blame this time, not Nicole.

Well Britney Spears and Demi Lavato are the new judges...very interesting. I think it is weird they chose Demi since she hasnt been around that long and I dont think apart from her brief Disney career her album(s) post that have even done that well.

I think this may be a case of The X Factor being saved by Britney...

Since season 1 ended (on an unimpressive note) and FOX fired Steve, Paula and Nicole... many wondered if the show truly had any legs. Simon would really have to do something BIG to bring people back in. And, despite her flaws... BRITNEY is BIG!!

Even when she was just an uncomfirmed rumour she kept this show in the press all year so far...

And Simon Cowell knows this. $15 MILLION doesn't lie.

I'm now rooting for the show and more importantly, i'm rooting for Britney. She is the definition of THE X FACTOR and the biggest reality judge ever I feel. Well played Simon.

Oh and i'm sure this Demi girl (youngest ever reality TV judge) will do fine... :funny:

Now we will get Britney vs. Xtina gate all over again! People are going to be analyzing the hell out of who is the better judge.

While I do think Britney is saving this show... theres no denying she needs a little boost herself. Similar to Xtina when she joined The Voice.

At least they are on the perfect shows... Britney (The X Factor) and Xtina (The Voice)

I will say after watching The Voice UK over here... after the gimmick of the swivel chairs, it really is a second rate X Factor. And it's ratings are going down fast.

Are you talking about the Uk Voice or US Voice? because the US Voice is still doing really well considering its on NBC and its done better than last year.

The Voice UK... started off pretty big over here with around 11 million viewers but has slumped to as low as 5 million this past week.

Britian's Got Talent actually came out the top dog (no pun intended) in the in the big ratings war by the end.

OK I'm cool with Britney being on the panel, I think she could be an interesting choice and would bring in some of her fans.

But Demi Lovato?? really??? This girl hasn't really had a career to speak of to be in a position to be a mentor. It would have been better to get Miley Cyrus as she has had much more exposure to the business than Demi. But even then I would prefer someone older and more experienced as I believe younger judges would find it harder to be respected.

I thought Tulisa was far too young for X Factor UK and now the USA has gone even further.

Atleast Tulisa has bigger career to speak of. Demis mostly consists of the horror of hollywood.

And calling it now, Britney will have get to mentor the girls this year. Demi the groups, Simon the boys, and LA the over 25s.

Tulisa wasn't exactly huge... a member of Ndubz was really all she had, and I don't think that group ever really broke out the way they wanted to. At least she is having solo success now.

I think Simon wants the groups. For one, it's what distingushies The X Factor from other reality singing competitions, a group won for the first time in the UK last year... and most importantly Simon wants to find the American One Direction.

So this is how I see it...

Simon - Groups
Britney - Boys (I think Simon would potentially want a Brit win, making it seem like she was money well spent)
Demi - Girls
LA. Reid - Over 25s

I still can't believe I'm talking about Britney in the context of judging X Factor. :woot:

The UK edition has started up again and off to bang. Nicole wasnt as bad yet but it will be awhile since we see her swing into full gear since they rotate out her spot throughout the auditions before she joins full time for boot camp. Mel B was def. like the female version of Simon during her stint in the first ep.

Honestly it was a bit disappointing...

It's lost a lot of its sparkle, and has become so damn repetitive. In the first 5 seconds the judges were spouting the same crap they do every year.

- ''I'm here to find a star''
- ''I'm from America... and I'm here to find a worldwide star''
- ''I'm here to win... It's not just about the voice''

Mel B was told by producers to be the nasty one and they probably did tell that girl to sing a P!nk song. And that bit at the end with Tulisa and the girls grandfather. :whatever:

It's always been fake and manufactured... but my god.

Not to mention it was it's lowest ever launch in the UK since 2006.

The US version needs to get it together! I think it was ridiculous how they tried to stretch out who was going home by doing 6 saves, a performance, last 6 saves. And I am not a fan of them saying who got the most votes, sure it is interesting to know, but it must suck for the contestants. They are doing anything they can to drag it out to 40mins.

Still enjoying the UK version so much more even if this is its weakest year all around (except when it comes to Nicole who did a total 180 between the two versions, she is GREAT this season)
