Pre-E3 2006: X-Men - Taking Down Sentinels
We play two new levels from Activision's upcoming Official Movie Game.
by Hilary Goldstein

May 4, 2006 - At the end of May, the X-Men make their Last Stand in theatres. Before you see Wolverine, Storm and Cyclops battle for the fate of mutantkind on the big screen, you can enjoy an all new X-story from the comfort of your couch. X-Men: The Official Game, expected to hit store shelves May 16 for all current-gen consoles, Xbox 360 and PC, bridges the story gap between X2 and The Last Stand.
We snuck an early look at the E3 build of X-Men: The Official Game. Though it features many of the levels we have already played and covered, there were two new levels we had not yet played. Though, sadly, there were no new levels of the teleporting Nightcrawler, we had the chance to storm the Zen Garden outside the Silver Samurai's castle with Wolverine and take out Sentinels in Downtown Kowloon with Iceman.
Wolverine: Storming the Garden
We previously battled two of the Canuck's greatest foes, Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth, but there was another Wolverine villain we were eager to meet. The Zen Garden mission leads up to a boss battle with another classic Wolvie villain, the Silver Samurai. Though our build of the game does not include the battle with Samurai, the charge towards the castle certainly got our feral rage pumping.
Wolverine was designed to play each level as a button-mashing festival of slaughter. Developer Z-Axis has certainly pulled off that feat. There aren't blocks to push or puzzles to solve, the Zen Garden is a straight shot of violence that lasts a good 15-20 minutes.
As Wolverine, you must fight your way through scores of Hydra soldiers and make your way inside Silver Samurai's castle. Broken up into digestible sections, Wolverine first must simply cut down every Hydra in sight, which unlocks the gate to the next area of the Garden. From there you must take out a series of Teleport Nexuses, each with a half-dozen consoles that must be destroyed while battling back waves of Hydra.

The combat system is simple, but surprisingly tough. Wolverine is constantly under attack from all sides. Some Hydra soldiers carry machineguns, others rocket launchers and the truly tough ones wield swords pulsing with energy. It's the samurai Hydra that prove toughest, as they will sometimes dodge or block attacks, leaving Wolverine open for extra damage. Even expert gamers will see a serious dip in Wolverine's health throughout these prolonged battles. Fortunately his Berserker Fury power not only sends Wolverine into a rage of bloodlust, but greatly replenishes Logan's health.
Though the demo held Wolverine to a surprisingly limited number of combos, the enemies had a couple of different attack patterns. Hydra with rocket launchers backed away as Wolverine roared forward for the kill. If they were in the middle of reloading and Wolverine got too close, they'd try and smack him back with their gun to give them the chance to clear and fire. Enemies would circle, never coming single file to be easily picked off by the Canuck. It would have been nice to have a grab move or similar clearing attack, but Adamantium claws prove to be enough of an advantage.
It's just too bad we couldn't take on Silver Samurai. Like you, we'll just have to wait for the final version of the game.
Iceman: Sentinel Takedown
Iceman's new level drops him in Downtown Kowloon, where he must stop 15 flying Sentinels from acquiring building materials for Master Mold. What's Master Mold? Just think of him as the big papa (or mama) of all Sentinels. The Harvesting Sentinels are smaller than the ground troops and more agile. Fortunately for Iceman, they're also a little easier to destroy.
Ice sliding around the small downtown area, Iceman must take out 15 Sentinels. The sentient robots fly around, often ignoring Iceman until he attacks. After all, they only care about getting the materials Master Mold requires. Though the Sentinels may be slow to attack, Iceman doesn't have such luxury. There's a countdown timer forcing you into quick action. Each Sentinel Iceman drops adds to the timer, but it's never enough to make the exercise a cakewalk.

Frosty is easy to handle on his ice slide, though the 180 turn option can sometimes be disorienting. Navigating downtown and nailing Sentinels with snowballs is easy enough. There's no complexity to the mission, but sometimes simplicity is best. Downtown itself is a bit too small and the invisible ceiling a tad too low to get a true thrill from zipping through the streets, but perhaps that's something saved for another area of Kowloon. Sentinels are the perfect addition to the upcoming X-Men film and a welcome sight in Activision's latest X-game. Sure, there were Sentinels in X-Men Legends, but they weren't as imposing with Legends' comic-book art style. The Sentinels of The Official Game look as if the Terminator and Galactus had one hell of an ugly baby. Just the way it should be.

X-Men: The Official Game tells the story that falls between the second and third X-Men films. It explains why Nightcrawler is no longer around for the Last Stand (apparently there's a reason outside of contractual disputes!). For that reason alone, this is one that should be interesting to play when it hits shelves in a few weeks. Be sure to cluck the links below to check out some new gameplay movies and screenshots from the 360 version of The Official Game.

If you're interested in this game, be sure to add it to your wishlist. You can keep notes, rank games, get updates by email, and more.

I think it will be good, from those videos it looks kind of hard to play.

One magazine has reviewed it already and gave it 4 stars. It might be good

Actually ... if went into a local EBGames and preordered it there, you would have received the poster as well. And at least there, you would get the poster rolled up. I have a feeling that if you get it online, the poster is going to be folded. Just my opinion though.

And with the store, you will have it the day it comes out. From online, you have to wait for them to ship it to you.

Actually ... yes it is ... it is in the dictionary. :D

sneak
v. sneaked, also snuck (sn

k) sneak·ing, sneaks
v. intr.
  1. To go or move in a quiet, stealthy way.
  2. To behave in a cowardly or servile manner.

I was always told, it was sneaked and snuck isn't good english.

Sorry, it is a word, but it's not good english.

Questions.

1. Is Nightcrawler teleporting in the new video with him in it? Because it looks like he's just flying across the room. They probably didn't use the smoke so you can see what you're doing. But what's he doing in that video?

2. Does anyone know if you fight Juggernaut in the game? I hope so.

Thanks.

I just watched it! It was great!

Graphics are amazing!:sup:
