I don't see it as shameful. While DC should have renegotiated their deal with Moore on an ethical standpoint, you can't blame them for wanting to capitalize on Watchmen. I also find the theory that Moore was screwed over to be complete and total nonsense. Neither Moore nor DC could have forseen how big Watchmen should have been. While DC should have given Moore more of a financial stake with the property, to expect them to just give it up is ludicrous. And Moore knew what he was getting into, hell, back then it was considered to be one of the most progressive creator deals of the time.

i think the watchmen prequels are pretty shameful. but not because i think moore is being screwed over. yeah, i feel moore ended up on the crap end of the deal, but it wasnt DC's intention to screw him over. they're not to blame for that. its just how things worked out.

but rather, i think everything that needed to be said about these characters was said in the original novel. i'm cool with DC capitalizing on the books success via special printings and merchandising, etc....thats a cash grab i can understand. but this....these prequels....its just so unnecessary. it feels disrespectful to the characters and story.

All comics are unnecessary in the first place. That doesn't prevent us from reading them and liking them. I don't see how it's disrespectful to the story. But maybe all Sherlock Holmes story after his supposed death are disrespectful to the story, as he was really meant to die in the first place?

So all those prequels and what-ifs we get from other Marvel and DC classic characters isn't disrespectful? What makes Moore's stuff so special? Because he's Moore?

some characters/comics are created to exist specifically for a single purpose and story. other characters are created for infinity. its got nothing to do with alan moore, outside of the fact that most of his creations have been birthed to exist in a limited form.

why didnt it happen? was it DC that didnt want to do it, or did moore end up deciding against it? i'd be more open to it if it were the intentions of the creator. either way, these prequels DC are putting out now are not the story moore intended.

BBC News over here in the UK are interviewing Alan Moore on HardTalk right now.

Talking about how V for Vendetta influenced the Occupy movements.

He also talked about why he hasn't watched any of the films of his adapted work. He also talked about Lost Girls, and he used the characters because they are in the public domain.

Moore has also talked about the Watchmen prequels, said it's DC's choice because they have the rights, but doesn't seem happy about his work being used. Moore says he's not a fan of adapted films e.g comic books converted to film.

Says the graphic novel industry is dying.

Moore also talked about creator rights e.g Siegel and Shuster at DC.

So what's everyone's thoughts on the first issue? I thought it was excellent. Darwyn Cooke really delivered from a storytelling and visual perspective. Say what you will about all this but this was a perfect first issue imo., introducing us to the characters and the world of the Minutemen. We're off to a good start here. I'm just trying to decide if i'm going to buy this weekly or wait for it to be collected.

I have a friend who has read some comics. Not a lot of comics, but that doesn't prevent him from acting like if he was an expert. And among them, he read Watchmen. And he says what DC is doing is shameful because "you don't write a prequel to the bible. It was a stand alone story".

Basically, Moore plays the diva, and some people decide his work is the work of a god. It isn't. As great as Watchmen is, it's a work of fiction, and as long as the prequels are great, why should we be against this work? Even if they are not that great, it won't make the original Watchmen bad.

Oh, DC definitely wanted it. I think there were delays or something and it was finally just scrapped. Moore and Gibbons definitely had their ideas for it though. Moore even worked on the Watchmen RPG.

I would agree, if Moore wasn't an outright crazy asshat by this point. Anyway.

I agree. I've been a bit doublesided to the whole idée, but I really enjoyed this first issue.

the prequel concept didnt interest me at first but after watching the behind the scene video over at mtv i'd have to say that i'm giving this a shot and that it actually looks good. the preview for the minutemen comic was really interesting.

although i think that wb should have made a proper open world type of watchmen game and not an unspired beat em up.

First issue was good. Blake's scene was my highlight. Overall, the writing or art doesn't touch Watchmen, but this is still worth the read.

This first issue was neat, Cooke can really illustrate a story and he has really no equal in the medium right now. I hope this pace is kept up.
