You Must Order Your Philly Cheesesteak In "english"

I wonder if "Geno" would have told that to one of his fellow Italians when trying to purchase food 100 years ago when they all were flocking over here.

I guess we'll never know. So why don't we just focus on this problem in the here & now.

I'm reminded of the cleaning ladies at my work. I have to let them into all of the units with my master key.
It's been the same crew members for 5 (some only 2) years, and they still have to call their boss so she can tell me which unit to unlock next.

After all of these years, they still can't say "one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine or zero."

But it doesn't effect anyone else dude....didn't you know that?? LOL

I feel your pain.

No..it's everybody's problem. The fireman and police who can't understand how to help them...the doctors who can't treat them.....the scum that take advantage of them....the teachers who can't teach them. It's a strain on the system........

Yeah im sure the doctors wont be able to treat a guy with a gaping whole in his chest because he cant speak english.

You like to say "LOL" to yourself quite a bit, eh?

Edit: Wait a second... I forgot to bold that, sorry.

And I wasn't arguing that your chances for success in this country decrease if you don't speak English. Anyone with a brain can tell you that you need to learn basic English in order to succeed in this country. I just find it (very) funny that you get so preachy about those who need to learn the English language, when your posts are usually wrought with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes.

Smart guy. :)

But you read my post. Also, I type faster than my thoughts and I make typing errors......at least it's in English. That's the point. Don't try to deflect from the main focus. Whether I have a down-home southern accent or straight outta' Brooklyn, it's English that bonds us as a nation.

Bonds us as a nation? Yeah, I like how the whole melting pot thing has been thrown out the window lately.

Debate Breaks Out Over Sign At Philly's Best Known Counter

Sign at Geno's

(AP) A City Council member jumped into the debate over a sign at one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints that reads: "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

During the council's meeting Thursday, Councilman Jim Kenney asked Geno's owner Joseph Vento to take the small sign down. The English-only ordering sign has irritated some activists in the diverse neighborhood of South Philadelphia and drawn national attention.

"It's such an iconic institution and business, one that is that visible for many of our residents, for the region and the world," Kenney said.

Vento, whose grandparents struggled to learn English after immigrating from Sicily in the 1920s, said his staff is glad to help non-native speakers order in English and no one has been turned away because of a language barrier.

"I don't see much of a big deal about learning to say Cheez Whiz," he told ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" on Friday.

I love this!!!

Jepp, good way to make all the non-english speaking tourists avoid your place!I bet his competition is doing a victory dance by now:up:

Pretty funny. Geno's makes some pretty damn good cheese steaks, but by far my favorite cheese steak place is Jim's Steaks on South street. Their steaks are awesome.

celldog is a linguist... racist of the language

I don't know if I want to jump into this debate but, this is part of the reason the United States of America have problems

Only because people like you make it unnecessary for aliens to assimilate. What's the incentive to learn english when everything is in english or spanish??

uh, I'd work harder on crafting your insult. The word "linguist" is already taken.

linguist

One entry found for linguist. Main Entry: lin·guist
Pronunciation: 'li[ng]-gwist
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin lingua language, tongue
1 : a person accomplished in languages; especially : one who speaks several languages
2 : a person who specializes in linguistics

The problem is not that celldog is a "linguist". The problem is that so many ignorant, lazy people AREN'T "linguists".

Are you a linguist?

uh, probably an...amateur linguist, yes.

One thing's for sure, There are a couple of foreign countries I'd like to visit, but I will not go without learning the basics of their most common languages.
For me, I'd simply be too frustrated and afraid, being unable to express myself or understand even the simplest of sentences.

(meaning, I don't consider myself enough of a linguist to travel abroad, let alone take up residence abroad.)

So you're only partly ignorant and lazy?

I would do the same as you. But you must remember... we have the resources to learn these languages. We are on a message board talking, so obviously we have some free time on our hands to be able to learn extra things if we want to. Most Mexicans coming over to the U.S. don't have the resources or the time to be able to learn English the way we can learn other languages. They usually aren't very wealthy and they have to work hard to provide for their family. There really isn't much time to learn English. Also... it is harder to learn a new language when they are older. The children of these people are the ones who will learn English. They will go to school and will have the time to do this and therefore they will learn English. They will be "linguists" knowing both Spanish and English. Assimilation as "celldog" brought up takes time. It doesn't happen over night. It didn't happen quickly when all of the Europeans were coming over here at the start of the 20th century either. People seem to think this way though... which is very wrong. It took the children of the immigrants to lean English most of the times. When they came over from Europe all they did was settle into little sections of the city who were of their particular nationality and language. Take Boston for instance... Boston was/still is kind of broken into sections. North Boston you have the Italians, South Boston is all Irish, etc, etc. All I am saying is that it isn't easy for these people who immigrate over here and it does take time for them to learn the language. Sometimes they never do, but the children of the initial immigrants will learn the language and assimilate much better.

Lol, This is always funny, when people see me criticize someone else, and then think they're going to *zing* me with my own words.

Part of the reason I'm so critical of others is because I'm honest, and there's no one more self-analytical and honest with himself than me.

Yes, DEFINITELY I'm partially ignorant and lazy. DUH!
I just said that I'd like to travel, but my laziness regarding the pain-in-the-ass of having to memorize foreign words and syntax when you've got a creaky old adult brain is one of the biggest things holding me back.

The fact that I have degrees of laziness and ignorance doesn't negate the fact that others do too.
