If one is Ethiopian then that just answers your question right there. Do you think poor people from Ethiopia are able to come to the U.S.? Hell no. The Ethiopian you are speaking of is probably quite wealthy and therefore either learned English in Ethiopia or had the time and money to be able to learn it here. The same goes for the Bosnia native. Mexicans who are coming here are generally not wealthy by any means. There is a HUGE difference between Mexican immigrants and immigrants from Europe, Africa, or Asia. Ethiopia is a ridiculously poor country... the ones who come here are wealthy. I know an Ethiopian who works with my mother at a rental car agency. She owns more than 10 cars in Ethiopia and owns more than one house. :o

Well, if I decided to make my way to America and I were Mexican I WOULD ****ING LEARN ENGLISH.

My friend from Bosnia (who is obsessed with "Rock'n'Roll" and begged me to give him guitar lessons) watched as 2 of his family members were murdered before his eyes.

My "right-hand-man" at work for 4 years was a guy named "Hadi", he was from Jabuti.

Both guys came to America in a panic, running for their lives.
Doesn't matter if you believe it or not because the tears in their eyes while recounting their stories are authentication enough for me.

Both guys were smart, somehow got here, have family members that they haven't seen for 5 or 7 years, and have commented on how hard it was to learn English.
But I dare say, they speak better English than many of the Americans I encounter on the Hype.

Are you, actually saying that, Ethiopeans and Bosnians are just, innately gifted when it comes to linguistics? :confused:

You really have no clue. Tell me how you would. While you sit in your nice comfy chair bought by your parents you can say you'll do many things... but you wouldn't. Come on now. How are you supposed to learn English? Provide for yourself and your family and barely get by as it is... or learn English and end up on the streets? Take your pick.

Or I could have somebody teach me the basics.

Or even easier, I could purchase or even borrow a goddamn book from the library

English is not the official language of U.S., so there is no reason why immigrants have to learn it. They may be limiting their oppurtunities by neglecting to do so, but that is completely their decision to make. Likewise, if any businesses wish to serve people whom can't speak english, that is also completely their decision to make.

Until a law is passed banning languages other than english in the U.S., there is no reason why immigrants have to learn english.

All of which you know from these countries are probably wealthy enough to get this education in one way or another. Ethiopians just don't come to the U.S. if they aren't wealthy. I'm not being ignorant. I'm speaking from my own experience. I was born in the U.S. and my mother struggles to get by. I know how hard it is for immigrants who are already poor to begin with to come over here and try and make their lives better. They don't have the time or the money to go to school and learn English as some immigrants from other nations who are already wealthy may have. Don't get all pissy at me, Willhelm. People go through tough times all the time... do you think some Mexicans don't have family they haven't seen in years? Come on now. They go through far worse times than any other immigrant does. It is harder for them to get good jobs as well.
 
I agree with outsideredge, the busisness should be able to NOT sell it's product to whoever it so decides.

People should have the right to be jerks as long as they don't physically harm anyone else.

It's kinda funny all the bleeding hearts crying in this thread, I mean it's not like they were deprived of an essential item necessary to survive, it was a cheesesteak which in a lot of countrys would be considered a luxury item.

This is just another instance of modern liberals exposing themselves to be quasi-socialist.

That assumes that all immigrants are parents.

However, two more words - STUDENT LOANS. And no, these classes to learn the language are rarely expensive, or else nobody would ever attend them.

Night classes rarely meet every single night. More likely they are one or two nights per week. And last I checked, most immigrants with children weren't single parents.

So voila. The parents get alternating nights, keeping the children maintained while they learn the language of the country they're in.

Ethiopia is one of the poorest nations in the world. Only the wealthy are able to leave the country to come to the U.S. unless they have some connection to someone with money who will bring them here. The Ethiopian women I spoke of that works with my mother also has had her life threatened multiple times. Her father was killed because he was a general in a the army when a civil war broke out. It doesn't change the fact that she is wealthy.

People are and should be responsible for themselves, not the government.

I don't understand why so many liberals complain about the US becomming a police state with big brother and everything, and yet get all furious when the government doesn't intervine and do the smallest detail to be a more convienence to their lives.

The simple truth is, no matter what your situation there is someone worse off than you. If the government has to intervine in silly situations like the one here, then that is no different than someone else tying your shoe. These people who are offended should take the initiative to CONFORM (yes CONFORM) to the standards of society. Society shouldn't CONFORM to their standards or inablilities.
