I was reading this article on the revolutionary new deaging effects that were featured in X-Men The Last Stand's opening sequence. This could be a good thing for future sequels if they want to shoot any type of flashback with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson etc. in BB2 or 3. Anyone else agree?

Let me tell you now.

Young Magneto distrubed the **** out of me. I don't want to see anymore of that tech. anytime soon.

It was disturbingly good in my opnion. Do you know how many people didn't even know that it was an effects shot?

I thought it was just makeup when I first saw it. Looking at the stills though, they did an amazing job.

Looked a little like plastic, but still amazing.

I hated that scene. It was terrible. I wanted to go from the theatre.

Magneto looked Meh to me.

Holy ISH!!! I thought it was camera trickery and makeup . . . especially since Mags was wearing a turtleneck . . . I thought they were using that to hide his jowels . . . this is really amazing!!

One of my pet peaves is how in every movie that you see a flashback sequence, you can tell the actor is just in makeup . . . I was really amazed at how young they made these guys look, but later in the movie, I was looking at Magneto and thought . . . "how did they hide his jowels and wrinkles so well"

There was a rumor months ago, that both the second and third film would be shot back to back like the Pirates of the Carribean sequels. It would be a good way to keep the actors young, particularly Bale if he wanted to return for a fourth. As well as Caine, Oldman, Freeman, etc. I honestly don't think that makup effects are needed. In Begins when Alfred is with Bruce before Rachel comes for Joe Chill's trial, both Bale and Caine looked young enough considering that was before he began traveling.

I agree. Caine looked great in that scene, and it was a bit noticable how he differed from his past to current age, even though he didn't have that much dye in his hair or anything. And Bale almost looked like he was in his 20's.

I wonder how much this treatment costs in regards to a CGI budget . . . depending on that, they could film a whole dam movie w/ Ra's as a younger man . . .

I loved that technology used in X3 and think it could definately be a good idea if they use more flashbacks in BB2. The only thing I would worry about is that Nolan seems pretty against using CGI or atleast using as little as possible.

I think it was good that X3 used that kind of technology because now film-makers have seen that it works and looks good, they might use it. Seeing Michael Caine reduced to his younger days would be awesome

well Bale is lucky enough to get good genetics from his folks, so he may not really need that kind of VFX to make him look young. :D

in truth Bale has aged little since he hit puberty. he just got taller, lost the baby fat around the face and thats it :p.

They didn't even try to make Alfred look younger in the earliest scenes (when Bruce is a child) - I thought that was damn lazy. Not that would have expected a full CGI job but they didn't even do anything with hair, make-up or lighting.

They at least changed Gordon's hair colour.

Would have been great if they'd had the technology to really make them look 20 years younger - but if they did it in a sequel it would be very jarring because it wouldn't match what was in the first.

It wasn't just makeup? What did they do?

It was all done with computers, no de-aging makeup was used at all. And the scary thing is that they could go even younger. That's why there are rumors thta it will still just be Ian Mckellan in the Magneto prequel and they will just use this technology.

I thought Patrick Stewart looked a bit like a mannequin. You can't blame the FX houses, they only had like 6 weeks to do them...:(

I for one think the technology is astonishing. When I first saw that scene in the theatres, I initially thought "Make up? Is that make up? Holy crap!"

I later found out that it was in fact this technology you mentioned and I was shocked. I think it looks great and is truly revolutionary for movie making.

Nolan doesn't like to heavily utilize CGI, that's true, but something like this has nothing to do with explosions or people flying or spaceships, it has to do with the enhancement of an image. I certainly see no problem in that. If he thought a scene needed it, I say go for it.

McKellan talked about this procedure in an interview before X3 came out, it sounds quite interesting. They actually filmed those scene completely normal, no make up or hair dye or anything. All the de-aging you saw was done on a computer. Fascinating, isn't it?

Imagine what they can achieve with more time?

Oh yeah, forgot all about that. I guess this could save Peter Jackson an extra headache with recasting.

It is indeed. I imagine that at some point they'll feat. some type of flashback with Alfred, Bruce's parents, Ras etc. in the sequel(s) and this technology will be an excellent solution to the aging facture.

my exact thoughts.

so long as Ian Holm stays fit enough to run around for those closeups, The Hobbit doesnt have the time preassure to get done anymore due to casting issues. and if Ian cant do simple stunts due to his age, the can always adopt what they did in Star Wars and hire another actor to do the stunts and paste Holm's head onto him :p.
