Ok, everyone get their best dump stories out of the way! :D

The toughest movie to make is usually the 2nd one in any franchise, I mean if the first film is popular enough to warrant a sequel then it has qualities fans hold dear, therefore the 2nd film will be held accountable, if your franchise continues beyond that then everything is fair game, but that first sequel is a tough one to nail, even to get to the "It's not as good as the first movie but it's still good" status.

So, what are you favourite 2nd movies, be it in a trilogy or a saga or a franchise? I'll start us off! :) Honourable mentions to Temple of Doom, which is arguably a prequel, and John Wick 2.

Not exactly my favorite sequels, but just some that came to mind.
(1) The Two Towers - such a good movie.
(2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier - a great sequel.
(3) The Empire Strikes Back - even though I haven’t watched it in ages, so I might not feel the same about it anymore
(4) Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - I liked it, even though nobody else did.

And...yeah, that’s all I can think of right now. More might come to me in a while. Temple of Doom is a good movie too.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Superman II

Lots of really great #2s. I'd argue that the toughest thing is the third film. There are a handful that have done it, but not nearly as many as with #2.

Now I must say not all of those are as good as other films in the same series. Three of them (Bond, TMWNN, and LOTR) had direct sequels that were even better. These are merely the #2s I like the best.

I think the 3rd film is the hardest to make if you are making an actual trilogy because you have to stick the landing, but for franchises that have a looser framework I think the second is the most difficult to make work. Interestingly I was looking back at my list and I think 7 of them are actually better than the first movie. I notice nobody has listed Blade Runner 2049, perhaps the distance between the 2 films have people forgetting it's a sequel.

Good point. A lot of the best #3s (such as Goldfinger, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) have films that come after them.

Really liked Blade Runner 2049, but not quite enough for it to make my list. It is a tough list to make.

Sequels are tough, to recapture that magic of the first but we are getting better ones more often. There are others I didnt even put, Cap:TWS, Die Hard 2 which are great as well.

Definitely tough to find just 10. There were several other great movies that didn't quite make my cut including Aliens, Back to the Future Part 2, Lethal Weapon 2, The Castle of Cagliostro, Toy Story 2, Incredibles 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X2, Blade Runner 2049, Terminator 2, Wrath of Khan, and more.

I pretty much agree with everyone's list, I'll just add Hellraiser II.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx

Can't believe no one else has said it yet:

Predator 2 (no it's not as good as the first, but it still adds something new, different, & cool to the franchise)

Boo me all you want for this, but The Empire Strikes Back is technically the 5th film in that series. Feel free to change your votes to Attack of the Clones. :o
