Okay so there have been many good games so far this generation, but despite this, few of them are going to be showing up on any top 10 games of all time lists. So I figured I'd seperate it out to see what you guys think are the best games so far this generation. For me (soon to change when MGS4 comes out) its...
10. Condemned 2: Bloodshot - I like to keep a little variety in my games collection, and in a market dominated by first person shooters, sometimes you've got find what little variety you can. Although offering a first person view and guns, Condemned 2 is different from your typical shooter, which is why I like it so much. I'm willing to accept the original was probably much better, but I never got my hands on it. This serves as one of the scariest games I've ever played however, and is brilliantly brutal. Silly story aside, this is perhaps a very underated game.
9. Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock - Rock Band isn't out on PS3 over here and is way too expensive anyway, but I picked this up as my first Guitar Hero back at Christmas. Even though I suck at it, I really enjoy playing, and regulary put some time in to master songs on medium. Its just fun to play, very fun indeed.
8. Unreal Tournament 3 - Few online games draw me in for too long, but this is an acception to the rule. I sunk a good amount of time into this refreshing change from Call of Duty 4, and while I'm pissed with Epic being lazy and leaving features out that they've put in the 360 version, not being bothered about the obvious fact they haven't done as much as they can to make the PS3 version as great as possible, I'll always get lost in one game too many when I switch it on.
7. Rainbow Six: Vegas - This game came to me at a time of drought, and managed to stretch out over a good few months. I loved Rainbow Six 3, and always been one for hanging back and plotting over going all out with the guns. Again, it shows a nice bit of variety in the shooter genre, and a welcome change to Resistance and F.E.A.R. which I had been playing before.
6. Grand Theft Auto IV - You'd probably expect this to be closer to the #1 spot, but I've always been open in my opinion of GTA being overrated, and the same applies here. Friends calling you at any time and you suffering for not wanting to bowl or drive like a ****** was such a niggle for me that it definately knocked it off the 10 marker along with other things. That said, it is fantastic. The gameplay had been much improved and I found myself liking the characters for once, Niko moving up to be one of my favorite video game characters.
5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Ask me a few months back, and I would have told you this game sucked. The enemies leveling up with you completely ruined it. But when I started it up again not long back, I tried it not going to sleep, so I didn't actually go up in level. Now its more like an actual RPG than ever. My skills still increase so I do get better, but the bad guys stay the same. No game can capture the feeling I get from loading this bad boy up and walking through the land, the breath taking music capturing the atmosphere wonderfully. Great game now.
4. Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction - This is simple, down right fun. It runs so much smoother than the older ones, and is twice as fun to play. The comedy works perfectly, and I can settle myself into to enjoying the entire thing as much as a classic Pixar movies. Just that damned cliffhanger nearly had me crying.
3. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - You'll see me moan about this game quite a bit. Its not anything wrong with it, its that my favourite developer, Naughty Dog, I believe has more to offer than a 3rd person shooter, after the incredible Jak and Crash games. But even so, this serves as the best 3rd person shooter out there, and is the only other piece of entertainment media on the planet to capture the feeling I get from watching the Indiana Jones films, even if that's because its pretty much a direct copy. The attention to detail is astounding, claiming the best video game soundtrack composed and outstanding graphics. There's no game I've played through as many times as this incredible adventure, which I'd take over Kingdom of the Crystal Skull any day.
2. MotorStorm - Lack of options killed what could have been the very much deserved glowing reviews of this fantastic racer. It manages to capture intense heart pounding racing that keeps you coming back despite the lack of split screen, and I'm not a big racer fan. Truly underrated in my opinion, and the most accessible, pick up and play game out there. Plus got me into Wolfmother.
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - No game in the history of man has managed to capture the feeling I got as I made a desperate rush through the radioactive ridden fields of Cheynoble, then stopping dead in my tracks as I found the enemy walking straight towards me. That same feeling was replicated when McMillan makes a mad dash to the trucks, surrounded by enemies, just seconds later. In fact, Call of Duty 4 holds hundreds of this jaw dropping, heart stopping moments, that can't be matched by an other video game. Its the full package, so increidble that the length I didn't mind about. And this is all without mentionning the online mutliplayer that was the first to keep me coming back after more than a round or so. Truly fantastic.
