⚾ The MLB Thread

Watched Roki Sasaki pitch a couple of times and saw two different pitchers. The first guy had good control and filthy stuff (100+ fastball and 86 on his sinker). The second had filthy stuff, but couldn't find the strike zone. My guess is it was because he was pitching in front of his countrymen and and women, but I guess we'll see. He has a lot of movement on his fastball considering how hard he throws it. They said it dropped off a few mph, but that appears to be behind him.

Yeah. This was weird. He went from his playing weight of 175 down to 157. They couldn't diagnose what it was and he had to live on liquid food the last two weeks. He's back to keeping solid solid food down now and is expected to play opening day. I wouldn't expect him to be in top form for awhile.

Kinda scary when the doctors tell you they don't know what's wrong....

The Mets lost on Opening Day, and now everyone is criticizing us. However, it's important to remember that the Mets are still in a good position. This is the first time we've lost back-to-back Opening Days since 1999 and 2000, and the 2000 team went on to reach the World Series.

I want to give credit to the Astros; they clearly wanted it more. I also won’t trash talk Juan Soto, who chose to join the Mets for less money. He went down swinging, played solid defense, ran the bases well, and is currently hitting .333 for the season. Yet, somehow, some salty Yankee fans are claiming he’s not living up to his contract. Whatever! Plus, the Polar Bear is hitting .500.

Most games are about a 50/50 proposition. The Mets are gonna be fine if their pitching can hold up. Anyone can lose a game on any given day. I suspect when June, July, etc. rolls around, they'll be fine.

I can understand the sour grapes by Yankees (and other) fans, but Soto is a helluva player and ANY of those teams would love to have him. Period.

FYI, I heard the other day that Betts had gained back about 8 of the 18 pounds he lost, so he's clearly turned the corner and should be fine once he gets his strength back (probably in about a week or so).

Edit: I think I should have changed “week“ to “hour“ in my post above. Mookie Betts went three for five with two home runs; one of them being a walk off three run homer in the 10th. My apologies.

Generally speaking, when I read "MLB insider predicts.....", my eyes just sort of glaze over, but the WS are probably gonna trade this guy. If they do, it makes the most sense down the road, closer to when the trade deadline hits. That's when you usually get the most bang for your buck.

if the names aren't in the title and it sounds click bait-ish, i won't even bother to click it. there's gonna be a million posts like this coming this season

Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes continues partnership with Gary Sinise Foundation

"I will again donate a $100 for every strikeout I record during the 2025 season"
last season he raised $17K for 170 strikeouts

FYI.....Instead, I'm going to the desert tomorrow for a week. :funny:

In a few years when he's able to hit free agency, he better make that $1,000 per strikeout. LOL

The Mets currently have a .500 record as they prepare for tomorrow's home opener, which will celebrate two significant milestones: the 25th anniversary of the 2000 Mets and the 10th anniversary of the 2015 Mets. Four former players will throw out the ceremonial first pitches: John Franco, Al Leiter, Bartolo Colón, and Juan Lagares.

This season, the Mets' pitching has been impressive, with the starters posting a 2.90 ERA and the relievers achieving an outstanding 1.64 ERA. It's also encouraging to see Mookie Betts improving, especially after the concerning mystery illness that had Dodgers fans worried. Meanwhile, Yankees fans are upset about Juan Soto's departure. However, Soto has hinted that the Mets may have a brighter future, claiming they possess more talent. The upcoming Subway Series should be quite intriguing, especially since Yankees fans seem a bit sensitive about his comments that New York is a Mets town. Every time we excel, it appears we overshadow the Yankees in years like 2024, 2022, 2015, 2016, 2006, 2000, and 1999—those were the years the Yankees found themselves on the back page.

So, my attitude is that we are very early in the year and stats don't mean a whole lot. Things tend to even out over the year and I'm waiting for another couple of months before many of the trends become clear. Right now, the Braves don't have a win and the Dodgers and Padres don't have a loss. It's interesting, but that's about it. Lotsa time left and we'll see how things shake out.

Speaking of early season stats that mean absolutely nothing, there is a team, the Padres, who won their first 7 games in a row, and after 9 games, they are in the middle of the pack (3rd place) in their division.

Also, Tommy Edman is on track (after 10 games) to hit 81 home runs and Aaron Judge (after 8 games) is on pace to hit 120. :funny:

And this is why quality pitching depth matters.

It's pretty clear the Dodgers are being very, very careful with their starting pitching and playing the long game. They can bring in a guy like Gonsolin to take his place in the lineup and can still hold Ohtani until he's 100% ready to go. Going with

Yamamoto
Glasnow
Sasaki
May
Gonsolin

is still an outstanding rotation. And they still have Ohtani, Snell, Kershaw, and some good, young pitching in their back pocket as needed later this season. Snell's injury isn't considered serious, but he's expected to miss a couple of starts......you never know how he'll respond to rest though.....pitching injuries can nag at you for extended periods; especially upper body injuries.

Classy move Pittsburg. Trade a sign honoring the best player you ever had for a liquor ad. :lmao:

I'll bet a lot of fans aren't too pleased either. I know I wouldn't be. I know the franchise is financially strapped, but still.........

I appreciate your perspective. It looks like we have a long season ahead. The New York Mets' pitching performance over the first 10 games has been impressive, with an overall ERA of 1.72. The starters have an ERA of 2.16, while the relievers excel with an outstanding 1.15 ERA. We're building on the momentum from last year, as we have unfinished business this season. Additionally, we have won five consecutive games against teams that started the season in first place in their divisions.

Your boys are doing grreat and I expected them to be a top contender this year. While I'm surprised the Braves got off to such a slow start, it's a long, long season. There are some very good teams in the NL east and I expect AT LEAST 2 teams to make the playoffs.
