🇷🇺🇺🇦 Discussion: Relations with Russia and the war in Ukraine

That's really sad and understandable, but I don't really place any blame. It would have been nice if people had thought about this in advance and given notice, but I'm 100% sure there was no malice.

It reminds me of several months back, the US military was doing an air show or training or something like that over where I live in SoCal. People were out there gawking and taking videos of all the jets and seemed really happy and/or proud. When I looked at the jets, what I saw were things that could have come from another planet. I can't emphasize enough just how foreign they looked to me and I thought about how civilians in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. looked at those jets and what their reactions were.

If those things are coming for you, take my word for it, you have "no" chance. There is absolutely nothing you can do to stop them unless you happen to have some very specialized weapons; and I'm not even sure how effective those weapons would be. Those jets are absolutely terrifying and, while maybe necessary in this world, they speak to the world we've built and what our priorities are.

Makes the idea of the 2nd ammendment being necessary to stop tyrany seem a bit absurd. Guns would help on a home protection level, but if a true American tyrany ever arose a tyrant could send reaper drones or jets in and level an entire insurgent town in no time. And god forbid the american military ever start using napalm again. Americans have never really seen our military in total war mode up close. Hell, no one has ever seen our 21st century military in total war mode. We always hold back to some degree for the geneva conventions, international relations, moral reasons, or for domestic political reasons.

Sad thing is Americans pushing so hard for a higher military budget is the thing that will screw us all the most if a tyrant ever gains control of our nation.

All these ghouls want to go back to making their blood money with Russia.

It was for this same reason that Kissinger defended the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989 and successfully lobbied the Bush Sr administration against imposing sanctions over it: he had lucrative business ventures in China and didn't want to lose them.

The roots of authoritarianism run deep. Personal wealth over true democracy has been a de facto policy in this country for a very long time. If you are a member of a ruling class, consolidate your power and provide a facade of democracy. One way to accomplish this is to provide "free speech" to corporations in elections and provide a rationale by using think tank based talking points. Sound familiar?
