🏈 NFL - Game On

The NFL does a really great job at hyping up events in the off-season to keep the focus on them. Combine in 3 days, draft at the end of April and the schedule release in May. By then you have 2-3 months of OTA's, mini-camp and preseason and by then the season starts.

i still think the ravens are one piece of receving from being superbowl champs. flowers and bateman showed up but injuries at the worst possible time. andrews came back from a terrible leg injury and Likely really stepped up. i know andrews had those drops but i feel like he's gonna have a 800 yard/10TD season next year.

aghelor is kinda just there every now and then and i'm drawing blanks on the others WRs at the moment.
Last I checked the Ravens may also be in the market for a new kicker.

i don't really understand the Franchise Tag thing, if someone wants to explain it to me like i'm 5 :)

but it sounds like it's a negative thing when i thought it'd be positive?

In simplest terms, the Franchise Tag is essentially the easiest way for teams to prevent any players from leaving in free agency. It guarantees the player a one year contract fully guaranteed that's an average of the top 5 highest salary for whatever their position is.

There's two types of tags, the exclusive and the non-exclusive tag. If you have the non-exclusive tag placed on you, that means the player can talk to other teams to negotiate a new deal with like free agency, but their original team has the right to match the offer. If they don't match it, then the player gets to leave, but it's in exchange for two first round picks. The exclusive tag means the player can't do that, and is stuck.

The reasons it's usually considered a bad thing is because they players hate being essentially trapped by teams on short term contracts with no guarantee of long term extensions or insurance in the case of injury and what not.

I think the franchise tag also involves the average of the top 5 over the last 5 years??? I think there's also a kicker that it's 120% of their currently salary if that's greater. I think Tee HIggins was franchised last year and got about 22M and the top 4 or 5 were all in the 30M range for 2024. Next year, I think Tee is in line for about 26M for his franchise tag (120% of his 2024 salary).

As you point out, there's good reasons for the players not to like it, but if they can stay healthy for 2 or 3 years (not easy to do), it can REALLY pay off because everything is fully guaranteed. Kirk Cousins scored big time using it because he was lucky enough to stay healthy. Big risk with a big upside.

but you can't refuse the tag?
Nope. It's the anti-free agency clause. Also the team can only use the franchise tag on one player per year. Cincy can't franchise tag another player on the team until next year. Any of their other free agents can walk with no strings.

And if it already hasn't been said, you can only franchise tag a player 2 straight times. You can't tag him 3 years in a row.

I did not know that........for some reason, I thought Cousins got tagged more than twice, but, in any case, he scored like a fat rat, LOL

Kupp to the Seahawks. I'm livid.
Who's going to get him the ball? I just don't think Darnold is that good and, with a pretty bad team, he's gonna be worse. It's hard for me to imagine that Kupp didn't have better options, but I think 15M (without knowing the details) is the upper limit for him. Would've been much better having Maye as his QB....maybe he's just a west coast guy???

i felt like the location was a factor. he doesn't seem like the type who wants to uproot his family across the country at this point

I agree. In fact, I think he's originally from WA. Could be wrong, but it's sorta sticking in my mind. He's SUCH a good guy. The Hawk's fans are gonna love him.

he's hard to not like. seems like one of the most likeable guys in the league
