Want to pick up a new UHD this month but can't decide between The Thing in 4k or Predator in 4k. I actually haven't owned predator in years but I do have the shout factory The Thing from a few years back. Heard the new 4k transfer for it is incredible! Simply can't decide though. What do you guys think?

If you haven't decided yet, I would go Predator. The new The Thing transfer looks great, but the difference in quality between Predator's newest home release vs previous ones is vast. When people say it's one of the best 4k transfers, they're not joking.

That reminds me, do any of you guys have a method on keeping track on dvds and blurays? I know there's an app where you can keep track on your collection but I don't which one is better.

I made the mistake years ago when I bought the final season of Breaking Bad on bluray on amazon only to find out that I already bought it from another store and never opened it.

I don't have enough home media to lose track of what I have. I think I only have somewhere between 100 and 120 blu rays, DVDs, etc.

But I have been meaning to write them all down in a Google spreadsheet

I wrote a list a physical list a few years ago when I was making a switch to primarily digital. I definitely need to do a recount and log everything again in a spreadsheet to keep track of what I have in what format.

Maybe I'll do that this weekend while I have some time.

Talking about large collections reminds me to be selective about which blu rays and 4ks to buy.

My actual collection is pretty tight but looking on my Amazon Wish List...I had a bunch of things that, while I enjoy the movies, I have no reason to own. Especially now with streaming.
I actually went through last week or 2 weeks ago and removed a lot of stuff.

For example, Argo. Great movie...never get the urge to watch it. So why buy it and have it take up space?
Even something like The Bourne films. Enjoy the movies (at least the first 3). But I'm never really in the mood to watch them again. And the day that comes, they'll be streaming somewhere probably.

I've been making a switch to a primarily digital library mainly out of necessity due to space at the moment. I just don't have the room to hold the type of collection I'd like. So, right now it comes down to "will I be upset if I can't access this film anymore" when it comes to what I buy physically. Which is still a lot. Especially now with some films under the threat of not being released physically anymore, and there's always the risk of losing your entire digital catalogue. I really don't want to have to rely on streaming services to watch something, not with so many of them with so little selection.

I wish Netflix was still releasing physical copies of their originals. Would love to own something like Tick, Tick... Boom!.

Me too. Especially now that I'm getting rid of Netflix in between seasons of Stranger Things and You

I have the Criterion of Irishman and I know Beast of No Nation also got a release (both regular and Criterion). Narcos has had a Blu Ray release... But I'd love a Blu Ray of Dolemite is my Name and The Night Comes for Us. Stranger Things needs to release s3 and 4. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they release a whole box set after the next season. Other than that I don't need to own any other Netflix originals.

Not just Netflix, but other channels and services as well. I'd really like HBO's Insecure on Blu Ray but they stopped releasing it after season 1. Hulu's Palm Springs I wouldn't mind having the Blu Ray. FX's Atlanta I'd really like. And The Mando I'd like in 4k.

Someone a while back even pointed out that you can't even get a lot of these things on VOD anymore. Which sucks. I get the business reason why, but creating a walled garden for entertainment at this level just seems sucky

I watched A Walk Among the Tombstones recently, and I was taken aback of how damn great this was. This got lost in the shuffle of all those post Taken disposable action thrillers with Liam Neeson and was dismissed as such. It's a quality neo noir about redemption from Scott Frank with an engaging plot and dimensional characters. This goes alongside The Grey as those rare great Liam Neeson movies he made back then.

It also has an ahead of its time supporting cast with Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook and David Harbour as a very creepy serial killer.

Worth checking out. It's on Netflix.

I second this recommendation. Remember seeing in theaters, and revisited it recently. Thoroughly enjoyable mystery film. A lot of really chilling moments.

Yeah I always try to recommend A Walk Among the Tombstones (and The Grey) to anyone who don't know any good recent Liam Neeson flicks. And yeah it's directed and written by Scott Frank who later on made The Queens Gambit.


I also recommend Cold Pursuit and Run All Night if you're looking for recent Liam Neeson gems.

I need to watch Run All Night again. I remember enjoying it, but that's about it. There's a couple of action films from that 2012-2015 period I would like to revisit, as I can't remember anything about them. 2 Guns, Escape Plan, stuff like that.

I love The Grey. I still think Neeson and Carnahan deserved some awards love for that. I feel like it gets an unfair rep because it was advertised as "Liam Neeson punching wolves" when it was more of a drama/survival thriller. Everyone I know who saw it has the same complaint "YOU DIDN'T EVEN SEE HIM FIGHT THE WOLF" I also really enjoyed Carnahan's A Team movie.

Shame that Carnahan never got back into great filmmaking after those two. He mostly did TV for a while. That and complaining on Twitter.
Stretch was eh. I hear Boss Level and Cop Shop are ok. But they seem rather plain compared to his earlier stuff. But he seems happier

On Walk Among the Tombstones, I remember it being a dreadfully boring crime drama. I didn't expect an action movie at all but I couldn't really get jiggy with the story. Not terrible.

I do think it, and a lot of other Neeson movies got unfairly labelled as "just like Taken." For instance I heard that complaint about Non Stop a lot when they're not similar at all other than the fact Liam Neeson was in them.

Wish he was doing more dramas and comedies rather than action thrillers though. His appearance on Atlanta, Ted 2, and Life's Too Short were hilarious. I hear he's doing a Naked Gun reboot

2 Guns was a really fun movie and worth a revisit imo. Or even a first watch from anyone who hasn't seen it

I've seen it maybe twice, but not in a while. It's not crazy good or anything like that but i had a fun time. I have it on my "To Buy" list. Washington and Wahlberg made a great team.

A lot of talk has been about streaming movies vs theatrical movies. I think Run All Night, Non Stop, and especially 2 Guns are the level of quality streaming action movies or thrillers should go for. Especially 2 Guns. With 2 Guns I'm not even talking about the quality of the movie, but it's something that is a great Friday night pizza movie without being dumb, too loud, or obnoxious.

Yeah I was so glad I saw The Grey at a big theater. It's easily my favorite film about survival and those existentialism themes really stuck with me. It really handles dealing with death on a nuanced level.

Also it borrows a track from one of my favorite indie films, Ink.



And It sucks when I saw a bunch of people at my screening confused and almost mad at the ending because it cut away from Liam Neeson fighting wolves. Oh well...

I started watching Y The Last Man. 3 episodes in. Really good with lots of promise so far. Damn shame it got cancelled.
