Film 📽️ THE CINEMA LOUNGE

General Film
Just watched 'Emily the Criminal.' In the Capitalism Is The Real Criminal Cinematic Universe, this is Ant-Man: A by-the-numbers retreading of the sub-genre with endearing performances that make it worthwhile despite the lack of original ideas.

I'll be there Day One for pretty much anything Aubrey Plaza does, and she's great in this. Not her most challenging role, by any means, but I could watch her do crime and call out exploitative business practices all day. Theo Rossi is also terrific - A very charismatic but surprisingly fragile character. And their chemistry was amazing. So refreshing to actually feel sexual tension between a film couple. It seems we get those authentic sparks so rarely these days.

Fingers crossed that it comes out this year.

Poor Things

The film will be a Victorian tale of love, discovery and scientific daring, Poor Things tells the incredible story of Belle Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

Emma Stone
Mark Ruffalo
Willem Dafoe
Christpher Abbott

I would just like to thank @Kane52630 for ensuring that I will not be sleeping tonight, and will never hike in my life again :o

After being recommended it months ago, and seeing those gifs in another thread, I finally sat down and watched The Ritual. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and liked it far more than The Night House. What an awesome and terrifying creature.

David Bruckner also directed a couple of segments for Southbound and V/H/S that were the best things on it. "The Accident" and "Amateur Night"... both terrified the hell out of me.

I think this will generate some discussion...

The Fly (1986) - Watching the slow transformation of Goldblum turn into a human sized fly scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it. It took me a while to watch it a second time and a third time and I’ve probably seen it 100 times by now and I absolutely love that movie

Beetlejuice and Jurassic Park come to mind for different reasons.

Showgirls

I showed this flick to my girl for the first time. She was in awe at how bad, but so watchable this was. Elizabeth Berkley deserved an oscar nomination. :o Her table scene with Gershon is up there with the Pacino/Deniro Heat diner scene. What a time capsule! All natural. Swing low, sweet chariots. Verhoeven is one of the great auteurs of perv high cinema. A hell of a line to walk, but the man dances.

On September 4th, TCM is sponsoring STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN being shown at selected movie theaters for it's 40th anniversary. Well.....for our upcoming 23rd wedding anniversary my wife just presented me with tickets for it's local showing here at the MOVIE TAVERN. It's one of my top STAR TREK movies. I saw it at least 5 times at the theater back then, and an untold number of times on tape and DVD. I'm really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen again. We used to have a theater in my area that specialized in bringing back movies that were decades old....but it closed around 10 years ago (due to a massive fire). I miss that place.

It's another one of my favorites. :) Goldblum makes any film great.

Silence of the Lambs for me. I was 12 or 13 but it was the first film that I was thinking about scary thoughts outside of the time of watching the film.

I still haven’t seen that movie in it’s entirety yet :o

I rewatched the original "Planet of The Apes''.

There is still something odd and weirdly beautiful about it. A certain charm which none of the Matt Reeves flicks have. That isn't a slight at Reeves, but haven't rewatched any of his Apes flicks, but the original will now be a yearly revisit for me.

I do find that when I catch it as I'm sifting through channels, I stop and watch it. It really is great storytelling. :)
