10 Cloverfield Lane

I loved the first film but this isn't what I was expecting for a sequel and now I know why, still seems interesting though and will probably check it out on Netflix or digitally rent it since I only go to theaters to see a few certain films a year now and don't have dvds anymore.

I don't know about this...Cloverfield always seemed like one of those films that didn't need a sequel because the original was handled so well. Plus, with the great marketing campaign the first had as well as its stellar execution, it'll be really hard to outdo.

So will the added scenes or whatever explain what the creature from the first film was and it's origin?

When Goodman said there's something coming, it could mean things but I assume that means a lot of whole new creatures and those may be explained in the end but the event of the original may not even be explained except new york attacked being referenced.

Maybe those little parasite things from the first one have populated the Earth, or grown in size etc?

That's what I was thinking she saw on the surface. Really curious what the conditions are like up there and how far they spread.

The poster for this movie seems to imply it takes place in a rural setting and not right outside NYC or something

If its like The Mist with all kinds of strange creatures, different shapes and sizes dominating the earth that could be cool.

Revisiting Cloverfield right now. They're at the part where they're at Beth's apartment. Always have loved this movie, been a short while since I've seen it. But always nice to revisit it after a while. Brings back some of that experience I had in the theater in a way.

Were it not for the annoying 20-something characters and contrived plot I would've adored Cloverfield. I still do enjoy it and think the basic concept is genius but I could never get past that aspect of it.

I'd say this thread needs to poll, but it feels "no" "it'll suck" will be the winners.

Can there be an option for "I'm mad that this isn't Cloverfield, and can't seem to understand that the movie I want this to be already exists and can be easily seen on Blu-Ray or DVD"????

Knock off the snarkiness, you and you.

so it's in the same universe, fair enough. A quality film is a quality film regardless of brand.

I feel like I'm probably going to love the film but hate it as a Cloverfield tie in.

I feel the same way. I wish it were released as Valencia or The Cellar instead. It seems a great concept.

It seems like a great concept because it's cool to think that while something huge is going on at one place, there are smaller stories of what other individuals are doing and how they are reacting to the event. It's nice to imagine that an entire world exists beyond just what a few people might be doing. Um...unless the huge event in question is Cloverfield...and then it somehow becomes a bad idea.

Did you get a chance to read the script? If so what'd you think of it?

Just finished it. Its a solid script. I wish they left well enough alone as it would make for a decent flick. It had me guessing the entire time...was it real, was it fake? Was Howard telling the truth or Nate (I like that the script remains ambiguous as to that point)?

I can see how it can be inserted into Cloverfield's world...but I don't like it. So much of the tension of the script comes from the uncertainty. If it is the case, as I suspect, the biological/nuclear attack by the Iranians being replaced by Hammerdown and Clover's attack, you're going to lose a lot of the tension. We as the audience know that Cloverfield happened. There is no mystery as to whether Nate and Howard are lying. There is no question that it is dangerous outside. The audience will know that gigantic ticks are running around the place attacking people. That kills almost all of the tension of the script. It suddenly doesn't matter as much if Nate or Howard are lying because even if they are, we know that the world has ended and they are at least acting at least somewhat altruistically. It validates Howard in a way that really should not happen until the final scene (because by validating him before that, Michelle comes off as both stupid and *****y...and the success or failure of the film will rest on the audience putting themselves in her shoes and caring about her fate, so that is bad).

I almost hope that this is a bait and switch and is a Halloween 3-esque anthology movie rather than a followup to Cloverfield. The script is actually pretty good...dialogue sucks at times but it succeeds at building tension and creating an atmosphere of paranoia, uncertainty, and claustrophobia. Clumsily changing the setting from the aftermath of an ambiguous terror attack (that may or may not have actually occurred) to the aftermath of the Cloverfield attack (which the audience knows occurred) undoes almost everything that the script does right. Plus, it doesn't even really add much. My guess is that [blackout]once outside the bunker at the very end, parasites interrupt the chase and possibly kill Howard, rather than leaving him wounded and screaming to Michelle and at some point Michelle encounters Clover as she drives away rather than a decimated Chicago and the ending is similar to Hud's fate in the original.[/blackout] So basically the movie is being forced into a mythology to which it does not belong in order to sell more tickets and the only meaningful connection will be a five minute (max) chase sequence at the end. Its turn this movie from a tense and original thriller into Starship Troopers 2. That is unfortunate.

A Cloverfield sequel that continues the story of giant monsters and possible corporate/ government conspiracy already exists? This is news to me.

Well a lot of what you said isn't in the trailer. If it hasnt been officially revealed to us then its a spoiler

Matt what are you talking about? You just mentioned the premise along with the catalyst of the event.

It's spoilers for a movie that no longer exists...

The Cloverfield teaser is still one of the best teasers I've ever seen. I remember watching it before my midnight screening of Transformers. Everyone was like "OMG, is it Godzilla?"

...I wish it was.

Precisely. I think it is a safe bet that the only thing that really qualifies as a spoiler is the Iranian attack. It isn't even treated as a spoiler in the script, it is a throwaway line that comes up about 1/4 of the way through the script and is never mentioned again. The script to the Cellar treats the cause of the "apocalypse," which, again, may or may not have happened, (notice how many times I have said that to avoid you being spoiled?) as an afterthought because it really isn't important. If this is being pushed into the Cloverfield-verse, it becomes something entirely different (and fairly important, which changes the nature of the script all together). So you haven't been spoiled at all.

As for me talking about "the premise," I think the trailer is pretty clear that not all people in the bunker want to be there and that there is a sense of paranoia. I don't see how that is a spoiler at all. If you could not infer that from the trailer I don't know what to tell ya.

It really is a great trailer. It is a shame it wasn't Godzilla. Creating an American Godzilla movie with that concept would've been brilliant, IMO. Then again, I'm sure Godzilla purists would have freaked the **** out. Personally, I like the idea of trying different things with horror icons. I think Friday the 13th would make an awesome found footage movie.
