10 People Marvel Studios Really Ticked Off

Louis Leterrier revealing in an interview that Mark Ruffalo was his original choice for Bruce Banner also quelled my anger.

That's awesome. Too bad that didn't happen. Unlike everyone else it seems, I've never been taken in by Ed Norton's acting. He's all right I guess - but nothing special. He was pretty good in Birdman but it sounds like he wasn't really acting LOL.

I like Ruffalo better than Norton for Banner. He has a warmth to him that Norton lacks.

While I knew about a lot of this stuff already, I had no idea that Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle were the original choices for their respective characters. Now I want to see a version of IM and TIH with those actors lol :hyper:

Yeah, especially since I liked Ruffalo and Cheadle better than their predecessors anyways.

Didn't know that Portman was upset at Marvel? Interesting.

It was nothing but a load of completely unsubstantiated "rumours" that floated around the internet late in 2012. I trawled through all the sites that ran with it as a story and was a unable to find a single source.

I can kind of believe it, though. She sleepwalked through the role in Thor 2.

Well, her character was written awfully (it was hardly her fault that Jane was unconscious for most of the movie). I could equally argue that Christopher Eccleston sleepwalked through the role of Malekith. She's also pretty good in a few of the deleted scenes, such as one where she apologises to Thor about Friggga's death and another one where she geeks out over the Asgardian magic/technology. Also if those rumours were true, then surely one of the websites that ran with it as a story would have been able to provide a source, which they were unable to do.

Another point: if Natalie really didn't want to come back, wouldn't Marvel have just recast her? If Marvel were willing to recast War Machine (not to mention the freakin' Hulk), then I'm fairly certain they would have been willing to do so with Jane.

Also, what reason would Natalie have to not return? It's no secret that she's good friends with Dennings, Skarsgard, Hemsworth and Hiddleston in real life. She was the first person to sign on for the first Thor movie, before they even had a script IIRC, and was very much involved in shaping Jane's character. As for Thor 2 and her supposedly not wanting to return, she directly refuted those rumours in an interview with Marie Claire with a definite "No". She even started a program with Marvel to encourage young women and girls to study STEM subjects.

Finally here's an interview where she explicitly states that she would be happy to return in future installments:http://www.**************.com/fansites/markcassidycbm/news/?a=88845

Of course, we could just assume that she's lying. Or, we could take her at face-value and accept that she is happy and proud to play a female scientist in one of the biggest movie franchises going right now, knowing that it may inspire some girls to enter a completely male-dominated field and pursue careers in it.

The whole thing with Jenkins was completely overblown. Natalie expressed disappointment. End of story. She was very active in promoting TDW and talked about doing Thor 3 during all of it. She was a huge draw for Asian audiences. I remember seeing Japanese trailers that primarily featured her in the last Thor film. I actually really detest the fanbase rejection of Natalie. She's a great actress (not to mention stunningly beautiful) and she's been perfectly fine in these movies. If she "slept-walk" through the last film it's because that was the effect of the Aether. I agree that the deleted scenes left the better part of her performance on the cutting room floor. But she wasn't the only one. There's an entire Malekith arc that will probably never see the light of day. It's still a good movie and for me probably my favorite thing in Phase 2 so far outside of the Daredevil series. I'm sure I'll get derided for that but I don't care. I really love both Thor films.

This. This. THIS!!!!

As usual, the rumours of her not wanting to come back were probably at best exaggerated hearsay and at worst outright lies. It honestly won't surprise me if we start hearing more Jane/Natalie-related "rumours" in the run-up to Ragnarok. And as always, people will buy it.

Oh, and lastly, anyone who says that Portman isn't a good actress clearly hasn't seen Black Swan.

Don't get me wrong. I think she's a great actress. And she clearly likes genre roles enough to keep doing them. But she also seems to do poorly in them. Her character isn't greatly written, but it also just comes off poorly.

I disagree about her not doing well in big budget "genre" movies. Sure, she wasn't very good in the prequels , but that isn't saying much when you consider she was opposite Hayden Christensen. She was terrific in V for Vendetta and, as RnR has pointed out, was more than adequate in both Thor movies.

Bring back Terrence Howard as a new character in the Marvel Knights shows. Empire is hot.

I doubt they would bring back anyone they've recasted as a new character.

I always thought the real story with Terence Howard is he basically demanded the same amount of money as RDJ and Marvel laughed in his face and told him to get lost. The story on that site is the one his camp spreads to try to save face.

Same thing with Jason Momoa and Drax. He waltzed into Marvel demanding a huge paycheck because he was CONAN and Marvel laughed at him.

The situation with Terrence Howard as I recall is that he was one of the first to sign on for Iron Man back when his career was on fire. So he got a big pay day to do the job and Marvel had a legitimate big name actor in their first film. Then came RDJ, Bridges, Paltrow. But Howard was making more money that Downey. When IM 2 came along Marvel wanted Howard to renegotiate because he clearly wasn't the box office draw. Downey was and it was ludicrous for him to play second fiddle to Howard. Howard didn't want to renegotiate and that was that.

As far as Momoa he said the reason he didn't want to play Drax was because he didn't want to get typecast as a shirtless guy with tattoos.

Were they? Why was Norton hired then? And why did Arad force Howard onto Favreau? What was it about Howard that Favreau didn't want to work with him?

And rightly so, because now he's playing Aquaman, a shirtless guy with tattoos. :o
