10 Subjects everyone should learn in school

I hate how art and music are being taken out of schools these days. I think both are essential.

1. History- basic to moderate (how we got here is pretty important)
2. Foreign Language- basic (i wish i knew this better)
3. Math-moderate (we just need it)
4. Science- basic to moderate (how the literal world works)
5. Art and music- basic (creativity and a dying breed in schools supposedly)
6. Phys Ed/Health (including Sex Ed and Drug awareness)- advanced (they were combined at my school)
7. English- advanced (language mechanics and literature)
8. Civics/ Home Ec- advanced (surviving without parents on a daily basis, kids should know for college)
9. Poli Sci/Sociology/Current Events- moderate (how people in the "real world" work)
10. Computer literacy/ Misc Tech skills- moderate (becoming more important for almost all jobs)

Im probably over-thinking this and have left out some basics...but heres what I came up with...and Im stopping at 7, because thats how many classes I had in a school year.

1 English
(the basics like grammar get covered early, and eventually you move all the way up to Proust...okay, maybe not Proust)
2 Science
(The fun stuff is always in the back of the book and never gets covered by year end...spread that book out more! Give everyone the basics year by year and those interested can get in depth with electives the following year)
3 Math/etc (I hate math...make them take two classes and more if they want later as an elective)
Freshman: Basic Math/Algebra
Sophomore: Algebra 2/The Stuff I Missed While Beneath The Bleachers
Junior: Spanish (sadly)
Senior: ELECTIVE
4 Social Studies
Freshman: History
Sophomore: American History
Junior: Sociology
Senior: Government
5 Life
Freshman: Home Ec
(Get a credit for baking cookies? Count me in!)
Sophomore: Keyboarding/Basic Computer
Junior: Advanced Computer
Senior: Economics
6 Health/Preparedness
Freshman: Health/Phys Ed/Sex Ed
(Id spend a little less time beaning the fat kid in the head with a rubber ball and more time talking about Herpes)
Sophomore: Drivers Ed/Basic Mechanics
(I cant think of a single course being offered in high school which could impact every single persons life more than teaching them how to fix their own minor problems and when to know they are being ripped off)
Junior: Business/career training
(Im shocked at how many people cant fill out applications, so basic taxes and do other operations of running a business)
Senior: Practical Law
7 Arts
Freshman: Art
Sophomore: Music
Junior: Creative Writing
Senior: ELECTIVE

The real basics that people need have been covered fairly adequately here but there are two subjects that I feel should be taught early in elementary school. Mnemonics and Logic. Mnemonics, which is the techniques for remembering things, has been around for 2500 years or so. It still isn't even mentioned in school AFAIK. The amount of things to remember is greater every year and virtually nobody knows how to remember it all. I think that formal Logic would also make a huge impact in society if it were to be taught widelyl.

Kids should also get a serious knowledge of science including computer hardware and programming.

Alot of people have put sciences down.

I mean I and alot of people are never really going to use biology in our lifetimes or chemistry.

How important is it to understand the theories of how our world works in order to live in it.

THis is like a green latern question. People have stated that a green latern needs to know how one of his constructs works before he can make it. But really how much detail is required. If you know a gun should fire a gun if you pull a lever, then how much detail do you need about the force of what ignites the gun powder and the rifling of the bullet to keep it going in a straight line and the gravity acting on the bullet etc...

as for music, personally i did try to learn an instrument and i did appreciate it but i don't necessarily think it enriched me with anything and that's probably because i knew it was not going to play a big part in my lifestyle.

I do understand the need to be creative and think outside of the box but can't that be done via a variation in the normal teaching approach rather than taking up a whole subject?

is it more important than sex education or physical education per say?

i have 12.
1. English
2. Math
3. History
4. Basic science
5. P.E.
6. Health
7.Computer literacy and understanding (basic)
8. Politics
9. Spanish
10. another foreign language
11. Sex Ed.
12 Logic

this would be the minumum reequirement to get a High school Diploma.
you want people to learn english spanish and another foreign language????

Personally, I reckon Basic First aid should be a topic for school children to learn.

They focus too much on drugs and sex and not on stuff that could potentially save someones life.

Exactly. They should try'n be a lil more proactive, rather than being a bunch of negative nancies.

~ no sex, no drugs; FUN is bad.

Well proper education with regards to awareness of the potential risks of drugs and safe sex can save millions of lives and may be more appropriate than learning first aid which you may need less than once every couple of years.

It's not necessariy saying that drugs and sex are bad, just that you have a choice and informing people of what they may potentially getting into when they go into stuff and make sure it's all for the right reasons.

Aplologies, I didn't read all the posts.
my fault, i didn't mean it rudely, i was just saying that are view points are aligned.

Wait!

I've got it!

There aren't 10 subjects that everyone should learn because everyone is different. But the good news is that there are enough of us that learn enough that we can be healthy, happy, and prosper giving that we all work together and do our part.

I know. You sound like you expected me to be serious... :oldrazz:

I hate to bring the past up but five months ago my friend was involved in a motorcycle accident, he passed out on the bike causing him to fall off.

My friends thought he had crashed, thus calling the emergency services.

The emergency services told them to put their bike jackets over him (god knows why).

His bag was already heavy enough, his face was being pushed into the helmet and he must have suffocated.

He actually died due to this.

Surely basic first aid would be to flip the body over, I understand you're not supposed to move the body but how is he supposed to breathe in that condition?

covering him is to prevent heat loss, you really don't want to be messing around with someone's helmet incase you cause additional neck and spinal injury, it's company policy

especially in a day and age where you can get sued for trying to save someone's life, the world is so messed up right now

I understand this theory of everyone learns a lil bit of something and becomes a valued member of society.

but for a society to work, there must be some basic form of communication so at the very very least, a language must be taught.

Alright let's put it this way, you have been stranded on a desert island for years with a group of other adults, you have started having children on the island, what subjects do you think they will all need to learn?

How to take your parent's car and drive to school when you miss the bus.
