is it wrong to ask if he's really insane or just making it all up? was all that talk about him being a super-intelligent master-planner with a phD at 24 ignorable?

I would build more towards schizophrenia if I were his lawyers....with the failure of his oral examination as a possible trigger...but at this point, any of that is totally up in the air....who knows.

Also, he didn't have his PhD, he was working towards that....

You're ignoring the point. It gives people the ability to make unregistered assault rifles. A 3d printer costs around the same as an AR15. Then, for under $50 in materials, you can make another one.
It should also be pointed out that he only made the lower receiver of an AR15, which is feasible due to that portion of the gun not receiving a brunt of the force from firing. He'd still have to buy a lot of the metallic components to even get a working gun.

Is it unreasonable to speculate that this guy simply went to the school's psychiatrist and acted mentally unsound as a premeditated means to building an insanity plea?

I mean, he planned this out for months. It wouldn't surprise me if this was just another part of his elaborate scheme.

I don't want to cheapen this thing, and I'm not attempting levity, but I have to reflect that I faked epilepsy to get out of German classes.

Things like that are very easy to do, and attention seeking narcissists are quite likely to seek special treatment by feigning a "condition" that requires it. Of course, these same people are the ones who might try murder as a means of getting on the 10 o'clock news.

I don't believe they are mentally ill. I think that they are selfish, callous, and pathetic people who would have just taken their own lives if they had more honour and compassion.

I see no reason to assume that he does not in fact have some form of mental illness. He is within the peak age range in which schizophrenia tends to manifest in young adults. If he does have schizophrenia, medical technology has advanced to the point that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to fake - a simple fMRI would settle the matter.

It would. If his lawyer really wants to convince the jury he's suffering from schizophrenia or any other mental illness, taking a fMRI to confirm would probably be their best bet.

That picture aint as bad as the Lil Wayne one. Wayne made a video for his song "My Homies Still" and in the video there was a scene where he was dancing with 12 skeletons in a movie theater (the video came out a few days before the shooting). Everyone's screaming Illuminati and crap. Because this can't just be a psycho's doing, the government and their shadow cabinets always have to be involved.

People are annoying.

That is a strange coincidence . I've seen the video is being picked apart for references. However the correlation doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone reveal themselves in a music video and in a way that oculd only be discovered after the incident occurred.

I might get a bad rep for this but, I've always believed that you let the victims decide what the penalty should be. I know it's barbaric and most victims, or people related to the victims, wouldn't be rational in their verdicts, but it seems a lot more fitting that way. To quote the movies themselves, "Justice is about harmony, revenge is you making yourself feel better" but harmony still corresponds with those who suffered. It has to be something they learn on their own. I duno, that's just me. Call it barbaric if you must.

It might be too difficult for them to all agree on the penalty. I think it's best to let a courtroom decide. Also you get into other grey areas. I'm not sure if we're talking verdicts or some type of vigilante justice.

This kid really makes me sad. I don't necessarily pity him or anything. It just puts the fragility of the human mind in perspective. Really makes one wonder if our species is worth preserving. We're so ****ed up and seem to do wrong much more than we do good. As a fan of superheroes I of course think mankind is worth defending but stuff like this really throws a wrench in the works of that outlook. Am I crazy or does anyone feel this way regarding things like this?

You shouldn't consider mankind unworthy of preservation like that; that's the mindset Holmes fell into. Events like these should bring us together. Things like this make me consider the unworthy outlook, but life really is a wonderful thing and people being mentally messed up is a part of it.

Yeah trust me. I know the Aurora shooting is nothing compared to other monstrosities being committed every minute out there. I guess it's just scary when a young person, around my age group, does something so inconceivably heinous like this. I myself suffer from anxiety, depression, and other things that some ignorant people might label as "major mental problems" but the right medicines and a positive outlook help me keep those things in check. But what made Holmes snap? Was it a bad mixture of meds? Was it a long untreated disorder? Could this happen to me? Or any of us? These are the thoughts that bring me down. :(

I get ya too. Holmes is my age, a few weeks older. He's smart, was studying to be a doctor/neurosurgeon ... it's like Ted Bundy, a guy who had the looks and brains to be successful and yet became a madman. Even the judge who sentenced Bundy to death expressed regret that the man's life had taken such an extreme turn. There's a good documentary that you can catch on YT about America and this phenomenon. It's called The Killing of America. Check it out. But be warned, it has upsetting material.

Upsetting material? Right up my alley! I may sound wishy washy due to my reaction to this whole Aurora thing but I enjoy diving headfirst into thoughts and studies of the most morbidly fascinating or dark nature. I guess every now and then one of them just happens to hit close to home for some reason. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out.

Also this is way off topic so feel free to PM your reply, but did you create that Alien series blog you link to in your sig? I browsed through it. Very comprehensive and awesome. If you're involved with its creation or maintenance, kudos! I bookmarked it. :)

Then you'll definitely enjoy it. And maybe some others in the thread will too. I found it quite harrowing. It addresses the rise of violence in America, gun crime, and then segues into exploring gun nuts, spree shooters, and finally serial killers.

Yeah (mods: apologies for going off-topic for this post, won't happen again) that's my blog. There was a lot more content that I had to take down but am working on restoring so, check it out now and then and enjoy :yay:

Isn't Holmes due back in court tomorrow? Does anyone know if they'll be televising that? (Sorry if this has already been discussed.)

It seems since the Olympics started, coverage of this has dwindled.

Isn't that the way it always goes?

I still see stories on the families, there's not much else to report until the next court date.

Well, that is tomorrow....and unless the "gag order" is lifted and cameras allowed back in the courtroom.....we won't get much with either....then it will be quiet for at least another 6 to 8 weeks....he'll go back in and make his plea....and then probably another 9 - 12 months before we have a trial....

I had to evacuate my theater today at a showing of The Watch. The theater started filling with smoke and in light of the Aurora tragedy, I booked it out of there. Didn't even wait to see if it was a prank or no big deal. I just left. My gut says it was a group of kids in the theater pulling a prank, but after that kind of mass tragedy, the fear of copycats becomes very real.

Holy ****. Did others leave too? Any follow up on this?

I heard a lot of people were evacuating theaters showing The Watch. :cwink:

(... just a bit of levity, but glad you're okay and I'm sure it was nothing too serious...)
