Didn't post the link to the video since it was very graphic.

Fox News: 2-year old Chinese Girl, run over by van (twice), ignored by at least 18 passers-by

CHINA - A disturbing video caught by surveillance cameras shows a 2-year-old girl in China laying in the street bleeding, a victim of a hit and run. Even more shocking is that the toddler was then ignored by at least 18 people, The Telegraph reports.

Video of the incident, which took place Oct. 13, shows pedestrians and vehicles passing by the toddler, named Yueyue, after she was run over outside her family's shop in the Chinese city of Foshan.

The graphic video shows the van driver slightly hesitate before running the girl over.

Not a single person stopped to help the child as she lay bloody on the narrow street. At least 18 people passed by on bikes, in vehicles, or on foot.

Finally, a female trash collector, Chen Xianmei, 58, lifts the girl up and asks people if anyone knows the girl.

The child's mother eventually arrived to claim her, saying the girl's name is Yueyue, The Telegraph reports.

Yueyue remains in critical condition, a nurse told the paper by phone. Earlier, doctors said she had suffered major head injuries and was breathing only with the assistance of a ventilator.

So the ratio of good people in this world is 19:1 (counting the guy who hit her)
that's pathetic.

Very tragic, but I don't understand why the people of China are so shocked. I'm Chinese, and I can tell you that the sanctity of human life and general compassion are in short supply in my culture. Not just in mainland China, but even in the more "civilized" places like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Heck, try dying on the sidewalk outside Pacific Mall in Toronto and see if anybody notices.

Ever person who walked by her needs to go to her hospital room, kneel before her, and apologize in tears, or be run over by a truck themselves. Then everyone nearby needs to run over to their bodies and laugh, going AHAHAHAHAHA! HAWWW HAWW HAAAAAAAAWWW!!! while dancing around and crying from the pure joy of seeing them in miserable, mortal pain.

According to the article for this on reddit-

In China, this kind of situation is referred to as the 'Peng Yu' effect. Before you condemn then, you have to understand their situation. The law right now in China means that many victims of traffic accidents, or people who have fallen ill in the street have actually successfully sued the people that helped them for sums of money that could easily destroy lives, even if there is no evidence that they are the ones that caused the accident (because they were not). There is a China Daily article on this topic.
In a country that executes more than any other, I wonder how willing you would be to potentially implicate yourself in a crime by helping a stranger. Yes, its very sad. But I, for one, find it hard to blame them in this situation. The law needs to change before people can become less suspicious.

I read that the little girl died.

She did. She left a cruel and pathetic world with a mass of horrible and nonchalant people. Even if there is a possibility of being sued or involved in the incident, they could have gotten help or stayed with the girl.

That's a horse**** way of thinking. "Let me leave this little girl to die because I might get sued." Doesn't excuse anything IMO.

No, I don't think it excuses anything, but it's the sad reality of it.

Aaaaaaand ever so slightly I'm further consumed in a nihilistic depression.

I read that the little girl died.
Most recent report I could find so far says the girl is in critical condition but has now been declared brain dead. :csad:

The 2nd driver has been arrested.

The 1st driver is still at large.

How about "let me leave this little girl to die because I might wind up in a court IN CHINA where there is no rule of law and anything can happen."

Not that I'm excusing this behaviour, in fact I am angry at it, but China reaps what it sows. Chinese culture is naturally selfish and mercantile, but you add to that people who are terrified of the state and this in a natural result.

I'm still trying to figure out how a 2 year old ended up in the street alone in the first place

How could you see a 2 year old laying there and not help? I can't believe this!

Little kids like to play in the street alot, I've seen it happen. It's the parent's job to keep them out of trouble, but unfortunately a lot of parents these days don't pay attention to their kids. I've also lost some respect for China for having such a stupid law.

Also from reddit-

I told my wife, who is native Chinese, about the video and she confirmed that this is true. People won't help you, period -- not because they don't care, it's because they care more about themselves and their family. If you take someone who is injured to the hospital, the cost is on you, not the injured person. Furthermore, the family members will look for someone to "sue", and since you're the only person within reach, they're gonna grab you and essentially extort money out of you.
There's a second issue here, which no-one has mentioned: Chinese people feel that generally there are far too many people in their country. And it's really okay for hundreds to die in bus crashes and such, because "there's just too many of us." This is why Chinese labor conditions are so horrible -- they're expendable people.

I was in Shanghai at a black market and outside the place, while walking to our cab, a child fell down infront of us in seizure before vomiting all over the concrete writhing in agony. I went to help the girl but was stopped by my friend (chinese), who advised that this was all an act and that she was a beggar. What I didn't notice was that she collapsed and a man placed a hat beside her body for people to put money into it. She was in legitimate pain but her guardian had figured this was enough of an 'act' in the sense it could cause people to feel sorry for her and give her money. I don't know why but after spending a couple of days there already, I could see that this was the only and best way for that girl to live and it made sense in a really ****ed up way. Sort of like when you see the Elephant Man for the first time and see the Victorian freak show and know that there is nothing else for these people in that society, as sick as it appears.

Awful.

Right! My kids never play out of my sight and know better than go in the street. The parents also must take responsibility.

Exactly.

I asked about how the girl ended up alone because this line disturbed me:
The child's mother eventually arrived to claim her, saying the girl's name is Yueyue, The Telegraph reports.
Eventually? no one even noticed she was gone?

I would have been arrested and sued for "interfering" then...

There's no way I would have stood by and watched that go on.

Awful.

That's the first thing I suspected, but I had no idea about the whole Peng Yu thing further fascilitating the inactions of these people. It's hard to believe this country is speculated to be surpassing the USA as a super power in 5 years, or actually maybe it isn't.

had to watch a Nissan commercial before I saw the Fox News report video...anyway, the bystander people...I wonder if that would happen here in the ol U.S. of A?
