2008 > The Year in Music

Was 2008 a good year for music?

  • Yes: A lot of really good music came out in 2008

  • No: I really didn't get into the new stuff that came out in 2008

  • Maybe: 2008 was no better or worse than most years

How lucky could I possibly be, though? I watch Fuse, MTV2, and VH1 in the middle of the night (when they actually play music videos), and I've yet to run into any of their songs. When I'm in the car, I sometimes listen to a couple of local stations that'll play Britney Spears, but never play Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers.

I think I've heard one Jonas Brother song twice, and one Miley Cyrus song a handful of times. It's not like when I'm watching Nocturnal State on VH1, and they play "Womanizer" every half hour.

My only exposure to the Jonas Brothers was at halftime of the Cowboys Thanksgiving game on TV. I didn't enjoy it too much, to be honest.

Katy Perry is actually really good. You obviously judge her by the only two songs you've heard from her.
Actually, I watched a concert of hers on the DirectTV channel, so I've heard more.

I gotta say, I don't "get" all the hate people have for acts like the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana. People complain about it like it's everywhere, but I've managed to avoid those acts almost entirely.
Same here. I don't like their music but I don't hate them. The only thing I hate about the Jonas Brothers is that right now they could have almost any girl they want but they choose to wait till they're married, WTF is up with that?

Oh and to the ChiDem comments, When AFD was released there wasn't any hype for it either and it didn't sell many copies. Just you wait and see.

I don't like Lil' Wayne's music at all, i think mostly because whenever i hear his voice I imagine him on the crapper in his recording stuido dropping a big one.

I call bull. I know the Jonas Brothers pledged their virginity until marriage and all that, but who do they think they're kidding?

Teens Often Cheat On No-Sex Pledges
Those Who Take Pledge Often Have Riskier Sex

SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. -- Teens who take a pledge to abstain from sex until marriage are no less likely than their peers to actually refrain from sexual activity, according to a study published Monday.
Also, those teens are more likely to engage in sex without protection from disease or pregnancy, the research by Johns Hopkins University indicates.
The study by Johns Hopkins researcher Dr. Janet Elise Rosenbaum was released in the January edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. {OD: This is a link in the original article to the published paper}
The findings come as no surprise to Mandy Black, founder of the Little Steps mentoring program in Simpsonville, S.C.
Little Steps was developed as a place where pregnant teens and young parents can find a sympathetic ear and advice from someone who's been there.
"We have a big belief here in being real about these kinds of things," Black told WYFF-TV.
Black said she was unmarried when she had her first child at 18 -- after taking the pledge.
"I was heavily involved in an abstinence program through our church -- right before I got pregnant," Black said.
The Johns Hopkins study compared the attitudes and behavior of about 1,000 high school students who had taken a virginity pledge to those who hadn't.
Researchers said that they found no significant difference in sexual activity, including the number of partners or the age at which the teen lost his or her virginity.
The study also found that teens who had taken a virginity pledge were less likely to use condoms or other birth control.
Black said that she understands the appeal of abstinence programs and that many parents fear sending a mixed message by encouraging abstinence but still talking about birth control. . . .

Give it a year or so. Some teenage ho will come out of the cuts, holding a baby she claims belongs to a Jonas brother. Which brother? The hell if she knows. She slept with all of them.

Odds are, at least one of them is gay. I'm willing to bet.

Can't remember one really good song that came out last year...

None of those were on my top 12, which I posted earlier in the thread. What kind of music do you like?

Mainstream hip hop/rap sucked, though Cube's Raw Footage was pretty darn good. Kanye completly dissappointed me, and Eminem's and Dre's albums pushed back for next year makes me hop that 2009 will be a LOT better.

Thats Mainstream for ya. Good year for hip hop tho. Elzhi,The Roots,KP,Black Milk ,.. NERD's album ,The Foreign Exchanges new one.. Not a bad year at all.

Completely dreadful year for pop music. Between Lil' Wayne, The Jonas Brothers, Rihanna and Beyonce and that awful as **** "Single Ladies", this year was one of the worst in recent memory. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift's albums were the high points for me.

I judge pop music like this. A whole bunch of songs that you listen to, and if it gets stuck in your head and you find yourself singing it in an elevator or something, then it was a successful as a pop song. I had a lot of **** stuck in my head this year, so as far as pop music goes, it was probably an up year.

And you only hate the Jonas Brothers because whoever dumped Taylor Swift's skinny ass. :o

Im a 70's, 80's, and 90's music kind of guy, so I don't care about music now a days.

There was some Great music in 2008. I think perhaps mainstream music media has a bit less variety in the US than the UK. Here are some of my favourites.

I really like what I have heard off this CD, but it isn't sold in the U.S.
I have Zootime and the Young Love CD single, and I have been able to track down a few other songs. But I can't get the full CD.
I have the Foals CD, but I admire it more than I enjoy it.
And I only recently started to get into Friendly Fires. I think their best song is On Board.

The Black Keys went to the same high school I did. As did Joseph Arthur and Chrissie Hynde. Not all at the same time, of course.
(Non-musically we had Angie Everhart, Melina Kanakaredes and Judy Resnick.)

Ive seen them 3 times in concert. They can put on a show for certain.

Yep. Attack and Release is their best CD yet (I put it on my top 12, which I posted earlier).
This was easily one of the best songs of the year:

No, that just intensified my already deeply seething hatred towards all things Jonas related.

And I guess I partially agree with what you said, because as much as I hate that ****ing "Single Ladies" **** Beyonce did, I find it strangely infectious as well.
