2010 NFL Draft Discussion

I would be fine with Jeff Backus at LT. I think we will add two more lineman this offseason. We could get Chester Pitts or Iupati at LG or draft Okung and move Backus to guard.

The Michael Oher came down to the fact Brandon Pettigrew was higher on their board. There was a lot of bad tape on Michael Oher.

Backus is a turnstyle and for that matter so is Dom Raiola. They're two big reasons why Stafford was getting scraped off of the Ford Field turf on way too many occassions last season. Cherilus is getting better and Jon Jansen was surprisingly solid last season when he was healthy but we do need to address the OL in a big way at some point whether it's moving back to take Okung (which aint happening in Suh is still on the board at 2) or spending our 2nd and 3rd rounders on OL, something's got to happen there.

That's simply not true. Backus played like a Pro Bowler this year and Raiola, while a bit undersized, is a better-than-average center.

The big reason why Stafford was getting hit came from the Guard position - we had a revolving door at LG and RG became an issue when Peterman went down against the Vikings. RT play was suspect at times as well.

Okung is certainly an option at #2, even with Suh on the board. With teams needing a LT at 4, 5 and 6 - there isn't anywhere to trade down to, so that isn't a likely option.

If I was the Lions, I would go Okung if Suh is gone. Suh could be a dominator ala Warren Sapp, but hes gone they need to go offense. Indy went offense for I think 5 years straight after drafting Peyton.

:hehe:

LOL My friends over at the thelionsfanatics.com would have a field day with that statement. Rewatch the tape of the Chicago road game down the near end zone and see who's man gets Stafford crucified and taken out the game. Or the Cleveland game and let me know who's man buries Stafford into the carpet on the next to last play of the game when the PI was called in the end zone.

The guards were terrible as well. I'll give you that. But Backus and Raiola are flat-out awful IMO.

If they deal down I wouldnt see them going past 6

Your friends are wrong as well.

Was Backus never beat? No - even Ryan Clady allowed a sack this year. The man who got to Stafford also happened to illegal tackle the QB (which is the reason he was taken out). It was also (I believe) on a QB run, so it's hard to fault Backus for not protecting the QB.

It's also impossible to use the last play of the Cleveland game against an offensive lineman since Stafford was running around for 6 or 7 seconds. It's near impossible to block any quality NFL defensivelineman for that period of time.

What's more important is the opinion of Jim Schwartz and Schwartz loves both players.

I would love to see them trade with Seattle allowing us to pick up Eric Berry and C.J. Spiller.

UF pro day started a bit late due to rain.

Fox and Tomlin two of the first coaches here.

So it's all over now and the reaction is mixed on the new motion. Some say good some say it hampers his strength, some say it has pause now.

I saw him throw some deep routes to both sides no problem and his foot work and drop back are a ton better.

Ultimately I don't think it will make mountains of difference on where he is drafted but I bet he gets at least another 3 private workouts based on what I saw today.

A list of all NFL tackles with a statistical breakdown on each. I'm curious to know what they define as "Sacks Allowed", but based on their analysis Backus was one of the league leaders in Sacks Allowed, if not the league leader. I haven't gone through the full list.

They have Backus the 12th rated tackle. Raiola is ranked 15th.

Interesting, they have Stafford as the worst rated QB in the league last year, below Russell.

Florida QB Tim Tebow reportedly showed unimpressive arm strength with his new throwing motion at Wednesday's Pro Day.

Some observers have called the new technique "mechanical," in that it has reduced Tebow's looping motion, but now involves a pause in the delivery. SI.com's Tony Pauline reports that Tebow's accuracy was good, but he didn't throw tight spirals and wasn't able to deliver the ball with all his might.

...

Tebow is going to end up in Cleveland, probably round 2.

Jon Gruden has been doing a lot of work with Tebow - Gruden loves the kid. Gruden also has a history with Mike Holmgren. Considering the time needed for Tebow to develop, Wallace and Delhomme are good mentors to learn from. Holmgren typically likes to develop his QB's - and Tebow is a huge project.

Gruden loves EVERYONE.

As much I  Jon, he salivates over every QB he doesn't have.

Tebow looked good at his pro day according to most reports.

Tebow has private workouts with five teams:

Bills ~ awful for him and they need someone now.
Seahawks ~ not horrible fit but far from great.
Patriots ~ great fit he could sit behind brady for a year or two then run wildcat option.
Browns ~ Hate this but If anyone can turn it around it's Holmgren.
Redskins ~ Awful team shannahan we'll see.

As previously stated he has the best chance with the Vikings IMO.

Haha. My biggest gripe with Tebow is how openly he expresses his religion, as it gets quite annoying after a while, so I'm glad that the other players realized how stupid it was to pray before the Wonderlic.

I thought it was a bit interesting that had he come out a year ago, Sam Bradford would have been a top five pick. A year later, that hasn't changed even though he's only played in 2 games this past season.

Considering the Lions loved Stafford and the Jets targeted Sanchez, I am not sure if Bradford would have been picked in the top 5 last year. Maybe St. Louis or Seattle would have pulled the trigger.
