Maybe you should get the original cartoons and comics before delving into the "movie." It sounds like you need it.

why do they even make movies fullscreen?

Some movies were shot in 4:3, otherwise known as full screen. I feel the movie should be represented in the aspect ratio the director intended. If they meant for it to be fullscreen, it should stay that way. If they meant for it to be widescreen, it should stay that way.

So what was Transformers made for originally? Full or Widescreen?

yeah and most if filmed with fullscreen in mind...but still in widescreen

It was animated in the 4:3 ratio...so "fullscreen"

then how is it being made in widescreen?

They are matting the frame...in otherwords...cropping it. It's a dirty little secret in the Widescreen market. There have been several films they have done it to.

That's a really good place to learn about aspect ratios.

As far as "facts" regarding movies that have been cropped from 4:3 to make a widescreen image on DVD, just look up the MGM lawsuit. Though some of those films were shot for a widescreen frame, some were not, and were just cropped. Stanley Kubrick didn't shoot in widescreen, yet many of his films have widescreen DVD's. Tim Burton filmed Pee Wee's big adventure in "fullscreen" knowing that theaters would crop the image with mattes. The mattes used to vary from theater to theater, and so in the scene when he is pulling the chain out of the side saddle some theaters showed the image of the chain coming up from a hole in the bottom of it. This mistake was repeated when the movie was released on VHS. Essentially things are shot full frame, and the director decides where he wants to crop it in order to frame the image he wants, the way he wants. During the time Transformers was made, the animation was done for TV, so it was drawn at a 4:3 ratio. As far as I know, and I have to do some hard research to back it up, the Movie was drawn 4:3, simply because that was the format the animators were set up to work in.

Here you go...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_The_Movie
"There is no true widescreen version of Transformers: The Movie. Animation cels acquired by collectors substantiate that the film was animated in 4:3 "full-screen" format, which was then vertically cropped to widescreen dimensions for theatrical showings. This practice was frequent with animated films during the 70s and 80s, including those from Disney."

Uhm...that research wasn't that hard actually...but If I wanted to find you hard facts I would have to go trying to find archivists that want to take some time out of their busy day and help me aquire them for you...I don't have much time in my busy day to do this...so please, take my word for it.

I would much rather see the WHOLE frame, the WHOLE drawing than to get a cropped version in the interests of having a widescreen movie. Widescreen only for movies that were intended to be widescreen!

I'd ask you to explain what kind of reasoning stands behind that statement, but I'm afraid that you really have one.

lmao!!!.... but its true.

I would much rather just see it remastered and, fullscreen, if they're just gonna smoosh the picture (that's my understanding of it) to make it appear widescreen.

Is there any evidence that they're actually going to crop it? If they are then I'm giving it a miss until they do a proper version. I have the original video anyway (lost the DVD version somewhere :o).

Yeah, watching movies in 4:3 movies is just a matter of personal taste, but what really annoys me is people who stretch widescreen movies just to remove the bars. That's just a criminal way of watching someone's art. Unless it's uwe Boll's, since he deserves no respect.

The film was created 4:3. The ONLY way to make it widescreen is to crop the top and bottom off, otherwise it would just stretch the picture, and "smoosh" it as Golgo has stated.

Aaah, I misread the original post. I didn't realise they were including a 4:3 version aswell as the silly one. Looks like it'll be worthy afterall.

Sorry, not with DVD's. A lot of subscription TV is shown in widescreen format (or something similar) and since newer televisions give you the option to stretch it and remove the bars, some people actually think this is a good idea. Not sure why.

Personal taste or not, they should be beaten with their remote control. :o

E: Not sure about the US.
