I have a couple question for anyone who had purchased any of the collectible merchandise. Reason I'm asking, I work in a industry that has alot of genre merchandise collectors and fabricators, and since I have 300 as one of the screensavers on my comp, I get into conversations about the film from time to time when customers stop in my store.
One of my more noted customers ended up pre-ordering and getting the licensed 300 Spartan Helmet, Shield, and Sword, and he told me he was disappointed in all three after he recieved them. Especially about the cost of the items in relation to the quality, from someone who actually makes and fabricated replicas himself.
Apparently (as I'm sure some of you have heard) the Helmet is very undersized and only fits a select group of people (and not him very well), and is very cheaply constructed by what this guy described, including having the sides of the helmet flaring out too much. He said he might just get a privately made one made and sell his on Ebay to dump it. Below is a pic of the one he said he had...
He also said the Shield looks pretty nice (he said it is the best piece of the bunch), but it looks very plasticey paintjob for something that cost $400, and isn't very sturdy as far as straps and handle go. Apparently, there is a new lower cost shield replica, but it is really off scale (smaller) compared to the movie.
But he said the most disappointing thing was the Spartan Sword. Apparently, the Blade looks entirely different than the one in the film, notably the high polish chrome instead of the blackened Iron-like finish seen in the film. He said the handle is spot on, but it was disappointing considering the look of the blade takes away from it's replica quality. I do remember seeing pictures of this, but now all I see is the blackened finish on the licensed replica sold with a plaque (this guys came with a leather sheath).
I'm interested to know if anyone else here got any of this stuff, and how accurate of this guys descriptions of this licensed merchandise is? Most notably the sword, since I'm concidering picking one up soon.
