360 Fan Has A Question!

The use of a and an are determined on sound not the actual letter. So one can say "a xbox", but they would be wrong. Using them solely based on the letter and not the sound has not been acknowledged as proper in a very, very long time.

You know what's worse than a Twilight fangirl? A X-Box Fanboy

You know whats worse than a Twilight fangirl and an Xbox Fanboy? A PS3 fanboy. And do you know whats worse than a Twilight fangirl, an Xbox fanboy and a PS3 fanboy? A Wii fanboy. They're all equally dumb.

Actually he can also be right.

One can say I am going to buy a Xbox just as much as they can say I am going to buy an Xbox.

Why? Traditionally the term "an" precedes a word beginning with a vowel, although we have also generalized this to words that begin with vowel sounds (i.e. I am going to leave in an hour).

As such words beginning with "X" present an anomaly. The letter itself is not a vowel, but when pronouncing it, on a phonemic level, it pronounced "eh-cks". As such, it does begin with a vowel sound.

Scholars have been arguing about this for years, but the real culprit is the english language, which has an annoying tendency of refusing to follow its own rules.

Thus, you and Degenerate10 are both correct. Neither is more clever than the other.

Yeah, hour doesn't start with a vowel either. And we both know that you can't say "a hour." It has nothing to do with the starting of a vowel, it has everything to do with starting with a vowel sound as shown by both hour and Xbox. Sorry, you fail. :csad:

Ah. I was beaten to it already...:D

What makes it really funny is he tries to sound like some kind of intellectual as he's saying it. Man I love the internet.

Cool points have been awarded to ProjectPat2280.

Dude, did you even read my post?

I stated the hour example to support your use of it.

In fact I specifically stated that example after stating "although we have also generalized this to words that begin with vowel sound".

And as I have stated before, the argument of whether it depends on the vowel or vowel sound of the next word is consistently debated among academics. It also defers between cultural uses (i.e. British vs American). As such, both uses are technically appropriate.

So no, I have not failed. You simply missed the point.

But by your logic you can say "a hour." It is apparently being debated. Or is it just in conjunction with the word "Xbox." :whatever:

Listen, you might want to stop now. You are really in the wrong on this.

Ok. So I was going to rip it up and down about how Resistance and Killzone are just Halo wannabes (they actually called Killzone 1 "the Halo killer":whatever:). And how Uncharted is just a Tomb Raider wannabe. Or how God of War is a Ninja Gaiden rip off. Or how Ratchet & Clank is a rip off of EVERY SINGLE GAME THAT HAS CARTOON CHARACTERS SHOOTING AT EACHOTHER!

But I'm not going to. Why? Because there is hope for you still. You love a game that in fact, loves you back. Mass Effect.

LOL!! your such an a$$! :yay:

I will admit to playing with mass effect at my friends place when my ps3 is at home in sleep mode. I come home late almost every night, and my ps3 is not turn on by this. I feel so guilty.

It is when the person making the correction comes off like an egomaniac. It's like poetic justice or something.

Oi vey! First up, I realize we are talking about grammar, but c'mon guys GRAMMAR IS COOL!

DACMAN my mate, I agree with you. You are correct. I repeat correct.

I myself would refer to the Xbox 360 as an Xbox 360. I would. And I agree.

My point is, there is controversy whether words that begin with the letter "X" start with a vowel sound or not. Is saying the letter "X" out loud composed of solely the letter, or it a sound that consists of a vowel. "X" in the english language is quite a weird case. The debate solely revolves around the letter "X". I apologize for not having made this clear in my previous post. The vowel/vowel sound argument I was referring to applies only to the letter "X" as far as I know. The debate does not involve words like "xylophone" where the "X" is not pronounced. Only words like "X-Ray", "Xbox", "X-Men" where the actual letter "X" is pronounced at the beginning. Again, my apologies for failing to make that clear.

That's all man. If you think that's wrong that is fine. I guess I'll leave that argument alone. But if I may,

DACMAN's response to DeGenerate's apparently poor grammar:

I was gonna say someone trying to be clever and using poor grammer at the same time. It would be an Xbox fanboy.

It's grammar. GRAMMAR. It seems you too are susceptible to failing.:csad:
Poetic justice is a ***** isn't she?

And I don't mean to put myself above anyone else. I am by no means smarter than any of you. I just tried to show a different viewpoint on the letter "X".

It's amazing how when I try to put together a decent argument in a civilized manner, I am labelled and mocked as trying to be an intellectual and an egomaniac. I did not label you or mock you, I simply tried to show a different perspective. Yet, you seem to have taken great exception to that. Why do you get so offended and find yourself in the right to make judgements about myself when I did nothing to offend you? Puzzling really.

I don't try to be an intellectual. I am one. But intellectuals love videogames too.:yay: And I do make mistakes.

That was a simple typing error, it has nothing to do with grammar. If I was then later asked how to spell "grammar" I could tell you the correct way even though I accidently misspelled it. I wouldn't misspell it again and then defend why it's ok to spell it like that. That's the difference between us.

See, was that so hard?

Oh sure, typing error.

Most typing errors I encounter involve missing a letter or so, or misspelling words due to order. Not confusing one letter for another.

Especially when the keys for the letters in question are not directly next to each other.:hehe:

So let me guess this straight, you confusing two different letters on two different areas on the keyboard is a "typing mistake:hehe:" whereas Degenerate missing one letter is surely a conscious mistake. Boy oh boy!

Don't worry though, I believe you.:cwink:

I wouldn't say that's the difference between us. I'd argue the difference between us is it seems only one of us can deal with arugments and differences in opinion in a mature manner.

See, was that so hard?

I actually found it quite easy considering my open-minded nature. Although if you had properly read the 2 posts previous to the one you quoted, you would realize I said you were correct in my first post itself. But you eventually got it after 2 more tries. So I guess all is not lost.

Yeah. I always come off kind off strong. Sorry. You have been pretty polite this entire time. You even said you were wrong and so forth. You showed good form even in telling me to calm down. You're all right in my book.

Because you dont bring anything to the discussion other that your terribly biased opinions. You are just adding fuel to the fire. I mean hell, you never even answered his damn question. You saw that he said "suck" and "ps3" in the same sentence and your little fanboy antenna shot up and you posted nothing but how the 360 sucks, which by the way, you did a horrible job of.

It's clear the person who started this thread is looking for a reaction and I don't fault people reacting to it.. That's like me going to the Microsoft section and say I just got a 360 but I think most or if not all the 360's top exclusives are garbage with that said please do recommend some games for me to play and then become shock when the Xbox fans trash me. The games he mention are highly rated not saying they don't have flaws but they're far from what he says they are.

The 360 fans are starting to sound like TNA wrestling fans they spent too much time trashing the WWE and less time enjoying the product they got. I admit I don't care for the 360 but trashing it or starting something with people that prefer it is crazy to me. The PS3 for the last two years have come out with top notch exclusives even MLB the Show is a high quality exclusive, the 360 on the other hand I'll give them Fable, Alan Wake, that new Splinter Cell and Gears of War 3 yet in all honesty if I can get everything else on the PS3 why buy a 360?
