Superman II
1. Lose the talking on the moon. Find a way around it.
--Not to be a physics nazi or anything, but I kind of felt that the much-lauded verisimilitude that Donner made work in the first film was lessened by Zod & co. freely conversing in the vacuum of space. Imagine how much creepier the moon attack might be if all three of them said nothing at all.
2. Beef up Lex. Make him a force to be reckoned with.
--I'm not the biggest fan of Gene Hackman's Lex. The performance is still fun, but that depiction of the character just hasn't aged well. He's a coward and an opportunist, and Zod's routine of threatening his life gets a bit tired after awhile. Rather, Lex should be the kinda guy who always has a backup plan. Even when Zod's ready to kill him, Lex has already sized Zod up and has planned ten steps ahead. Maybe he's got kryptonite in his pocket, I dunno. But there's so much more badassery that could've been done with a mere mortal outthinking a superpowered alien general.
3. Loved the Fortress scenes in the Donnner cut, especially the elusive re-energizing sequence. Gotta have me some Brando, studio politics be damned.
--But the Super-nookie needs to go after the depowering, not before.
4. Obviously no magic fight. The dramatic stand-off in the Donner cut works far better. Although there's gotta be a better way to dispose of Zod & co. than just killing them. They're powerless now, just throw them in a jail cell.
5. No memory kiss, no spinning the world back, just end it with "Lois knows."
--That balcony scene sure is touching. Perfect Donner ending.
