61 Nights of Halloween (2025 Edition)

They borrowed them from RDJ
They were definitely pushing Esther being believable.

Bite-Sized Review: Such a deliciously fun flick. Understands how to walk the line of goofy and slick so very well, with a twist far better then the original's.

I don't think I've seen this since I was a kid but man did this bring back memories. This is l actually a pretty entertaining, low budget Corman flick with some really fun performances from the late greats John Hurt and Raul Julia. Those two being the main leads definitely helped big time IMO and I also enjoyed the schlocky, B movie violence and gore inflected by The Monster in this.

An interesting little Japanese horror film that plays more like a videogame more than anything else but I dugg it for the most part because it's well directed and has some pretty creepy scenes in it as well.

An interesting flick although most of it was definitely done better in films like Bram Stokers Dracula and Eggers Nosferatu. I will say though that I actually really liked Caleb Landry Jones in this as Vlad/Dracula which is some casting I never would have imagined in a hundred years but I've been a fan of the guy ever since The Last Exorcism/X-Men: First Class and he does a pretty solid job here despite the spotty accent and makeup and the over the top scenery chewing.

His sword fighting/combat scenes in the movie are pretty badass too but sadly I wish Waltz was given way more to do.

15th of September:
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

halloween-3-xlg.jpg

45 more days till Halloween, Halloween... This might be the most convoluted plan a horror movie villain has ever concocted, and I gobbled it up. Season of the Witch is a fabulous, nasty mixture of camp, banging synths, and outrageous kills.

halloween-four-xlg.jpg

It's the return of Dr. Lo... I mean Michael Myers. This one retreads the original a bit too much, which feels particularly dull right after the circus that is Season of the Witch. Donald Pleasance remains the MVP as the entirely unqualified, mentally deranged psychiatrist in need of a psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. I adore the man.

halloween-five-xlg.jpg

This is the first real toilet flush moment for the Halloween franchise... but it's still pretty entertaining. A lot of that has to do with (once again) the uncompromising Dr. Loomis. He works with the tact of Maury Povich yelling, "Bring out the olives!" It's glorious.

Ventured into a Hannibal marathon the past week:

3. Manhunter (1986)

Why can't movies look like this anymore? It's easy for Cox's take on "Lecktor" (why Mann arbitrarily changed Hannibal's name is beyond me) to be overshadowed by Hopkins, but he's still very good and dominates his brief scenes. But above all else, the star of this movie is the COLOR. Every scene is full of vibrant life thanks to Dante Spinotti, making it a one-of-a-kind visual experience. Totally unlike the rest of the series, but it stands alone as a groundbreaking movie whose followers would do well to imitate maybe a little more.

4. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

As much as I do feel that Hopkins isn't a "Lead" here, I can't complain because this being one of the 3 movies to win the "Big Five" Oscars is too right. Incredible writing, directing, acting, everything. Foster is brilliant, and it's a crying shame we don't have a whole franchise of her Clarice cracking cases. That said, it's very easy to see why Hopkins' Hannibal became the defining character. Brilliant work all around, only so much that can be said that isn't simply summarized as "masterpiece."

5. Hannibal (2001)

Honestly the highest praise I can give this is "It could have been so much worse." The less said about where the book goes, the better. (It's easy to see why Foster bailed after reading it.) Scott & his 2000's-era creative team are doing characteristically good work, but the material just isn't there and Moore is unfortunately a sorry replacement as Clarice, giving a muted performance that feels unduly constrained in the shadow of her iconic predecessor. A big disappointment.

6. Red Dragon (2002)
tumblr_pbgep0CuZC1spmueto8_500.gifv

Giving Lector a ponytail has got to be one of the funniest "de-aging" choices ever. That said, Hopkins is great as ever and Tally's adaptation is excellent, honing truer to the book and making the more sensational elements that Mann excised feel naturally at home. Unfortunately, they gave the director's chair to Bret Ratner, who gives us nothing. Norton is also pretty forgettable as Graham. Fiennes as Dollarhyde is perfection, though, and sells the character and his more extreme scenes in a way Tom Noonan never could. It obviously helps a ton that Fiennes is obviously attractive, making the superficiality of his self-esteem complex far more compelling. Not nearly as good as Manhunter, but a worthy entry in the series.

Bite-Sized Review: More Syfy original then GDT's flicks, this one just works for me. I dig that they make up for the lack of spectacle with a bit occult vibe. Could take a whole series like this.

Exit 8 is based on a video game of the same name, so not shocking at all. :hehe:
