61 Nights of Halloween (2025 Edition)

And it's not just newer movies like Until Dawn, which, while still a foul move I could at least understand the reasoning behind putting new movies like that under a limited time ad-free plan only wall for a month or two before making it available across the whole platform as a way of going "if you want to see it right away you have to pay up". But they do it with older movies too. For example, the other week I was looking for There Will Be Blood and saw that even though it's not currently on Netflix, it's still a movie that you can't watch on the plan with ads:

Halloween Ends
If they hadn't chickened out in the last 15 minutes, it would've finally been the change that the Halloween films needed for years. It was a bold step that carried on the themes of the original and it did so with a deep character study. They did all that they could with Michael Myers' character, it was time to give him rest and have evil carry on with Corey under the mask.
But no.
Expect a new reboot with Michael Myers trying to kill a young Laurie Straude again. I'm done.
Thank you, Halloween Ends. You did all that you could.

Rob Zombie fans, when I get around to reviewing those films, avert your eyes...
The Rob Zombie defense force (aka @Man in the Suit and I) is at the ready.

Yep. This is why I was disappointed in them going back to Michael. Should have killed him in Kills and continue with a new killer. Also what was up with the ghost in Kills?

I'm guessing they justify it for movies they have for limited time through studio deals. Still horse crap.

Keep in mind, Netflix didn't add ads till 2022. There are probably quite a few deals with the studios that happened before they added the ads. These deals tend to be very big on the nitty gritty, and I imagine ads breaks something in the original agreement.

Same as broadcast rights?

Bite-Sized Review: Best character in fiction.

Bite-Sized Review: Part of me feels like each story should have a different director. But there is also something to be found in the unity of storytelling here. And the framing device is just so much fun.

Bite-Sized Review: Not much truly scares me these days. This one has moments of pure terror.

Oddity is fantastic and genuinely haunting. I keep thinking about the dilemma in the opening sequence. Is the creepy guy outside telling the truth and there really is someone dangerous inside, or is the creepy guy trying to get inside to hurt you. It was perfectly executed.

September 28th:
Sauna (2008)

Sauna is perhaps the finest horror film ever produced in Finland. Set in 1595, it follows two brothers: one a war-hardened veteran with violent tendencies, the other a scientist with a gentler heart. Alongside a troupe of Russian soldiers, they're tasked with charting a new border through Finland. Trauma, psychological horror, and supernatural events quickly follow.

The performances are excellent, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the ending is unforgettable. We don't have many good horror films, or horror films in general, but this one is a rare jewel.

Sooo..

WolfMan
2025
(mild spoilers)

A mishmash mess of really good and "ok I guess?" elements. Great fathers-son/daugther relationship explorations. Julia Garner is completely useless till later in the third act. Most of the transformation is great except for the """"" realistic"""" result.

Also, offscreen The werewolf can eviserate a deer in an instant, but once they are visible they are slower and weaker?. That's plot armor for y'all.

I oddly consider the car crash scene the scariest one, followed by the first hunting treehouse (or however it's called) stalking.

Had fun. 7.8/10

The film is simple but so effective. Understands how to use stillness to it's advantage. A rarity in this ADHD world of editing.
