61 Nights of Halloween (2025 Edition)

I'm finishing it, for sure! Then I'll get around to the movie and the show that I keep hearing so much about. Have you read the entire book series?

The only book in the Vampire Chronicles I read fully was Interview. Read half of The Vampire Lestat, and then years and years ago in high school I read a bit of Queen of the Damned. But there's one Anne Rice story you should check out when you can called The Feast of All Saints. One of my favorite novels of all time, but I digress.

And trust me, you'll LOVE the tv version of Interview. It's sexy, haunting and moving.

Kicking off October with the sacred texts...

Whale's Frankenstein is such a beautiful masterpiece, and it's crazy that you could argue it isn't even the best of the Classic Monster films.

A Tubi film that's actually pretty decent which is something that's definitely not common on that service but this was kind of a nice surprise. I'm not really familiar with any of the actors outside of them being mostly South African but I liked the girl and her adorable little sister and I also enjoyed the slasher/chase aspect.

6.5/10

As someone who's not even a big fan of the original Toxic Avenger I definitely thought this was a superior remake. Macon Blair really did his thing here without making the gory, over the top violence and humor feel super forced or too gratitous. Also, you just can't go wrong with Kevin Bacon playing such a slimy villain.

7/10

Yeah, Tubi Originals is hit or miss, but there are fun gems there.

I for one am very curious about the Tubi/RL Stine version of the Hulu movie I saw last year.

Bite-Sized Review: The True Hollywood Story version of the Little Mermaid, I got a kick out of reading the English translated lyrics that felt more like an exhaustive reciting of the plot.

***3/4

4. Wolf Man (2025)

I can understand why people wanted something different from this movie. But I liked it. Loved the wolf vision. And really, after Invisible Man, I was expecting something very different.

Was leaning to do some Flanigan for tv shows, but a book I'm reading is getting me in the mood for something a bit different.

I put The Shining on in the background at work today. Still a classic but Stephen King is 100% correct about Jack Nicholson being miscast in this. There isn't a single frame of him in this movie where he doesn't appear insane right from the start. :o

Second best one by default. Madelyn Cline carried this movie, found myself liking her character more and more.

Now time to watch Doctor Sleep.

The Mummy Returns

I made the wrong decision of watching this in 4K in my new projection system and oh boy, the special effects did not age well. This used to be my favorite because there are a lot of great sequences and the tone of the original is still there, but this time it didn't work as much as the original, specially after watching them back to back. It's still pretty good, the entire London sequence is aces and the cannibal pygmies are an inventive addition.

I feel like he biggest issue with Returns is they clearly didn't have a story. The first flows beautifully, with natural character and story work intertwining as it goes on. Returns has extra long sequences of nothing happening because there is nothing to do. So a lot of it is just reference to the first and forced conflict. Still enjoy it, but the first is an all timer and Returns lives off it's legacy imo.

Also Rock Scorpion and sword fighting Rachel Weisz.
