As to why it's disappeared from horror circles, probably has to do with how transphobic it's considered. The horror community in general is good with the inclusion.

DGG gets it. Halloween (2018) is an homage, a reinvention, and a hell of a good time. Carpenter's overhauled score takes me to church every time.

Halloween Kills is a camp masterclass when you really think about it. It's also surprisingly rich thematically once you get past the whole "EVIL DIES TONIGHT" of it all. I reaaaaally like this trilogy.
